MOSCOW, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wu Dawei and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin discussed here on Saturday the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula and the situation in Northeast Asia.     On the basis of mutual trust, the two sides exchanged in-depth views and reached consensus.     Both ministers agreed that the situation in Northeast Asia had become of major concern as escalating tensions there could trigger a new arms race, threatening regional security.     They said all parties concerned should remain calm and refrain from taking any actions that might further aggravate the situation. They said all relevant issues can be resolved through peaceful and diplomatic solutions such as negotiations, consultations and dialogue. The two countries will seriously carry out related resolutions of the United Nations (UN) in the hope that implementing them can help maintain peace and stability of the peninsula.     Both sides believed that the six-party talks was the only effective mechanism to resolve the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue. Only within the framework of the talks, can all parties find solutions to their security concerns, the ministers said.     They said China and Russia were ready to make efforts, along with other parties, to resume the six-party talks.     Wu arrived on Thursday in Moscow to discuss the Korean nuclear crisis. He will later visit the United States, Japan and South Korea.

RAMALLAH, June 23, (Xinhua) -- With more than 30 years of involvement in the work related to the Middle East issue, China's new special envoy to the Middle East Wu Sike said on Tuesday that he'll employ his personal experience on the region to help fulfill his mission.     Wu arrived in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Tuesday, starting the second leg of his first regional tour as China's new special envoy.     Upon his arrival, Wu told Xinhua that Chinese and Palestinian peoples have a traditional friendship, China has been long supporting the righteous Palestinian cause, with the positive sign emerged recently on the peace issue, China, along with the international community, is concerning on how to revive the peace process and push forward the process toward a final solution.     With this concern, Wu said the aim of his trip is to know the attitude and response of all sides involved in the peace process on the newly emerged situation, lay out China's stance on the issue, and exert efforts to boost the process with all sides in coordination.     Touching upon the issue of the internal Palestinian dispute between factions, mainly the rival Fatah and Hamas, Wu said Palestinian unity is crucial to solve the Middle East issue.     "Hamas is a major Palestinian faction, which enjoys strong public support," said the envoy, adding that, "it'll be important if Hamas can take an positive attitude toward the peace process and involved in it."     Wu said China is willing to see the success of the internal Palestinian dialogue, and is ready to make efforts on helping Palestinians to achieve national unity.     Wu, former Chinese ambassador to Egypt, was appointed as the special envoy in March this year to replace Sun Bigan.     He has been director of the Department of West Asian and North African Affairs of the Foreign Ministry, ambassador to Saudi Arabia and Egypt, and also the first Chinese plenipotentiary to the Arab League.     Citing his three-decade long diplomatic experiences in the region, Wu said that he witnessed both the disasters and losses caused by conflicts and the development, stability and opportunities brought by peace tracks between countries in the region.     "The contrast between the two tracks makes me convinced that military confront could not bring about the resolution of the Middle East issue, and the only way out is through peace negotiations," said the envoy.     Bearing the belief, the envoy said he will discuss both his personal experience and China's stance on the Middle East issue with all sides during his mediation, and actively involve in the peace process to fulfill his mission. 

WASHINGTON, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Zhou Xiaochuan, governor of the People's Bank of China, said on Saturday that positive changes have taken place in the Chinese economy, whose overall performance is better than expected.     "Facing the impact of the financial crisis, the Chinese government has promptly introduced a policy package to expand domestic demand and maintain financial stability, striving to respond to the impact of the financial crisis," said Zhou at the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC) meeting held here on Saturday. BEIJING, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao attended Friday the cremation ceremony of renowned philosopher, religion scholar and historian Ren Jiyu, who died on July 11 at the age of 93.     Ren was born in 1916 in Pingyuan County in east China's Shandong province. He joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in1956.     "Ren conducted research and education in the fields of Chinese philosophy and religion for a long time. He has made significant contributions to the country's cultural industry by compiling historical materials," said a statement issued by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee. BEIJING, May 23 (Xinhua) -- China is strongly committed to a world without nuclear weapons, Gareth Evans, co-chair of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament (ICNND), told a press conference on the sidelines of the North-east Asia Regional Meeting of the ICNND here Saturday.     The regional meeting, which was held Friday and Saturday, allowed the ICNND to engage in intensive action with key nuclear experts providing insights on global and regional nuclear issues and challenges, including proliferation threats and the safe and secure management of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.     Evans said, "There is a need to energize a very high-level global political debate on what remains very important risks and threats for the future of this world."     According to Evans, threats come from the existing nuclear weapons, new countries acquiring such weapons in the future, nuclear weapons and material falling into the hands of terrorists and non-state actors who have the intention and capability of causing catastrophic damage. Moreover, the multiplication of new power plants around could also create problems.     Evans said, besides some large countries, there has to be very strong engagement by all the other significant players and countries in the international community.     In terms of the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, the issue involving the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) occupied a lot of time in the discussions.     This is a very important regional security issue relating to disarmament and non-proliferation, said Yoriko Kawaguchi, the other co-chair of the ICNND, adding that China has played an important role as an intermediator.     "The DPRK should abide by the United Nations' resolutions," she said.     Evans said that it is essential to keep the door open for dialogue and continue to explore the probability for resolving this thing peacefully.     Yoriko Kawaguchi echoed Evans by saying that there was a consensus on the importance of the object of the six-party talks on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsular.     Evans stressed that it is important for all nuclear weapon states under the Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) to agree on a strong statement going into the NPT review conference about their commitment to a nuclear weapon-free world and the determination to take serious steps toward that goal.     A review conference has been held every five years since the 1968 NPT came into force in 1970. It has been ratified by nearly all the members of the United Nations. The exceptions are India, Israel, and Pakistan which neither signed nor ratified the accord and have developed nuclear weapons. The DPRK ratified it but withdrew in 2003.     The ICNND is an independent global initiative established in 2008, supported by the governments of Australia and Japan. It is designed to re-energize the debate about the need for a nuclear weapons-free world and all the interrelated issues of nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation and the future of civil nuclear energy in the run up to the 2010 NPT Review Conference.
