NEW YORK CITY — The principals and teachers unions are calling for New York City to delay school reopening for at least a month.While most major cities have opted to start the school year virtually, New York City still plans on resuming in-person. The mission is to take care of our kids."Jacob Stebel, a high school film teacher in the Bronx, said a pod system, where students would be taught in groups in a single classroom, won’t work with high schoolers.“Students will be grouped by the classes they have to take together, instead of students moving from classroom to classroom, teachers are moving from classroom to classroom," Stebel said.That would put him in six to seven different classrooms a day with just as many groups of students.“If I have to go into eight different classrooms a day, I have to set up my materials again,” he said.According to the mayor and city’s top educator, with a month to go, they’re still working through the details."One of the things we're working on right now, and, again, with a month to go, is how can we compress things so even at the middle school and high school level, there's less movement," de Blasio said. NEW YORK (AP) — The satellite radio company SiriusXM has locked up its most valuable asset, Howard Stern, for five more years in a deal announced Tuesday. Terms were not disclosed. Stern was already making a reported million a year. He's invaluable to the company, which had 600,000 subscribers when Stern announced in 2004 that he was joining and now has nearly 35 million. "I had been in a toxic relationship with terrestrial radio. And no matter how well I treated the medium, no matter how successful I made them, they abused me," Stern said in a press release. "Going to SiriusXM liberated me. I felt like Tina Turner freeing myself from Ike," said Stern. "And despite the naysayers and the ridicule, we have persevered, and are thriving. I've been proven right about satellite radio over and over again. With this contract renewal, I can't wait to see what else I'll be right about.The deal also gives SiriusXM exclusive rights to Stern's audio and video library through 2032. NEW YORK (AP) — The playwright behind such comedic hits such as "The Odd Couple" and "Plaza Suite," has died. Neil Simon was 91.According to Bill Evans, Simon's longtime friend and the Shubert Organization director of media relations, says the playwright died early Sunday of complications from pneumonia in a Manhattan hospital.Simon was the American theater's most successful and prolific playwright in the second half of the 20th century. He won three regular Tonys, plus one for special achievement, as well as a Pulitzer and the Mark Twain prize for humor.Simon's successes included "The Sunshine Boys," ''Plaza Suite" and "Sweet Charity." Many of his plays were adapted into movies and one, "The Odd Couple," became a popular TV series. 750

New York is adding new measures to prevent people from dying while taking selfies at a waterfall in the Catskill Mountains.The picturesque Kaaterskill Falls is one of the most visited spots in southeast New York state. However, capturing the perfect photo for social media turned fatal for several people.“I cringe, when someone is where they shouldn’t be,” says Peter Innes with the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. “Because they are just too close to the edge.”Four deaths in the past several years occurred due to the victims being too close to the edge, while taking or posing for photos. Officials say it’s now considered one of the riskiest activities at the park.“A lot of people would think about ice climbing or rock climbing, back country skiing,” says Robert Dawson, a forest ranger. “It’s actually picture taking, because everyone can do it now.”The park sees tens of thousands more visitors annually than they did just a couple decades ago. A lot of that is due to visitors posting photos on their social media platforms, attracting new visitors seeking similar photo ops.“Or they’ll put it on YouTube, and they wanna see how many hits they can get on it,” explains Dawson.“So, then they wanna make those really cool videos. That’s where they’re willing to take that extra risk.“Then people will see that and be like, ‘I wanna go up there.’” Two of the most recent deaths—in 2016—occurred after the state had already made safety changes.Officials added a staircase to prevent slipping, as well as fencing to keep people from the edge. However, people continued to walk around it despite the obvious park signage.   “We realized there was a problem because of the continued fatalities,” says Innes.Innes helped draft new regulations that went into effect this month.“People are now not allowed to get within 6 feet of the cliff’s edges themselves,” says Innes of the new policy. “They also can’t swim within 150 feet of the top of the falls.”Now, rangers like Dawson have the authority to ticket and even forcibly remove anyone putting themselves at risk.“Before I was just like, ‘Hey, I really don’t want you to do this,’ and some groups will listen some are like, ‘Hey, it’s a free country,’” says Dawson.If he could offer just one piece of advice to Instagram-happy trail goers, Dawson says, “You can still get that great picture; you can do it 10 feet away from the edge and you’ll get the same effect.” 2470

Nissan is preparing to oust its chairman, Carlos Ghosn, after announcing the discovery of "significant acts of misconduct" over many years by him and another top executive."Nissan has been providing information to the Japanese Public Prosecutors Office and has been fully cooperating with their investigation," the Japanese carmaker said in a statement. "We will continue to do so."It said an investigation found that Ghosn and another board member had been under-reporting Ghosn's compensation."Numerous other significant acts of misconduct have been uncovered, such as personal use of company assets," Nissan (NSANY) added.CEO Hiroto Saikawa will propose to Nissan's board of directors to "promptly remove Ghosn from his positions as chairman and representative director," the company said.Shares in French automaker Renault (RNSDF), of which Ghosn is CEO, plunged as much as 13% in Paris.
