Citizens from the following countries will be allowed into the EU’s 27 members and four other nations in Europe’s visa-free Schengen travel zone: Algeria, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, Montenegro, Morocco, New Zealand, Rwanda, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia and Uruguay. The EU said China is “subject to confirmation of reciprocity,” meaning it must lift all restrictions on European citizens entering China before it will allow Chinese citizens back in.Tuesday’s decree will not apply to travel to Britain, which left the EU in January. Britain now requires all incoming travellers — bar a few exceptions like truck drivers — to go into a self-imposed 14-day quarantine, although the measure is under review and is likely to ease in the coming weeks. The requirement also applies to U.K. citizens.The list of permitted nations is to be updated every 14 days, with new countries being added or even dropping off depending on if they are keeping the disease under control.The daily number of new confirmed cases in the United States has surged over the past week. The City of San Diego was awarded a million state grant that will help save food, save the planet, and save people.  The city will use a majority of the grant to convert its composting system at the Miramar Landfill into a closed system.  A news release from the city said that will reduce air emissions and continue to divert tons of food waste from the landfill.The City of San Diego currently keeps more than 100,000 tons of food waste out of the landfill by composting or making sure it’s diverted to food rescue non-profits before it’s thrown away.“It’s getting tossed because people don’t find the need for it or it’s got a slight cosmetic defect,” said Aviva Paley of Kitchens for Good, a food rescue that feeds hundreds of people a day by using food that could have been thrown away.“You can still make really good food with stuff that you just have to clean it up a little bit,” said Kitchens for Good Chef Trainer Theron Fisher.“It is so heartbreaking to see how much food goes to waste in this country,” said Paley.A portion of the state grant will allow Kitchens for Good to expand its operation.  It fed 35,000 people in 2016.  It would like to feed more than 50,000 by 2018.It would keep more food out of the landfill and feed more people who need meals.  Paley said one in six San Diegans go hungry every day.Another benefit for the Kitchens for Good program:  The cooks who prepare the meals are going through a 12-week training program to prepare them for culinary careers.  Paley said most of the participants have overcome obstacles from crime and drugs to mental disabilities.  The program opens them to a career they could otherwise never reach. 1718

In particular, face shields.Teachers recently asked the nation’s top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, about it and he said, “if you can get one, it’s not a bad idea.”Fauci went on to say that a shield shouldn't necessarily be worn in place of a mask, but more parents are considering the option for kids.“For some of the kids, a mask just isn't going to work. And in those cases, a face shield can be considered, but I think it needs to be understood that that’s not the default,” said Dr. Preeti Malani with the Infectious Diseases Society of America.Infectious disease experts say there just isn't enough data yet on how much protection a face shield provides.One study found it did significantly reduce the number of inhaled droplets, but cloth masks are also about protecting others. Shields were not as sure to do that as well.“If you're wearing a shield, the respiratory secretions that might be coming from your mouth or nose are not going to be as well contained,” said Malani.In the health care setting, face shields are used primarily to prevent splashing in the eyes.Malani offered this advice about finding the right shield.“It’s important that it’s long enough to really protect the whole face and that it wraps around fully and that it fits well up at the forehead,” said Malani.Companies, including Apple, Nike, General Motors, and John Deere have all started producing face shields.In a JAMA Network open viewpoint, it was pointed out that face shields have some advantages over masks. The burned remains of a Michigan woman have been identified by authorities as Susie Zhao, 33. Zhao played poker on the national competitive circuit. Zhao's body was discovered near a park in a Detroit suburb on July 13 around 8 a.m."The female subject was badly burned," according to a press release from White Lake Township Police."Surprised, confused, and saddened," said her former roommate Yuval Bronshtein. "It's hard to picture her having enemies."Bronshtein said Zhao bounced between cities including Los Angeles and Vegas and recently moved back to Michigan to be with family to be with her parents and to confront challenges in her personal life.She was an avid poker player and a national talent on the competitive circuit."She really was a excellent player," said Bart Hanson, a friend and poker rival. "One of the best in L.A. at the level we played at the Commerce Casino and it's the biggest poker room in the world."Authorities said a motive is unclear.
