WUHAN, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- This year's second largest flood has crested and safely passed the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze, China's longest river, on Tuesday, forcing engineers to close the locks at the dam.The ship locks have been closed since 8 p.m. Monday and more than 100 ships have been detained at the site, but all are in good order. The maritime authority is now making efforts to avoid congestion.The ship locks are supposed to open after water flowing into the reservoir falls to 45,000 cubic meters per second.Water flowing into the reservoir of the dam reached 56,000 cubic meters per second at 2 p.m., the highest since the flood earlier peaked at 70,000 cubic meters per second on July 20, the Yangtze River Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said in a statement.The water flow fell to 53,000 cubic meters per second at 8 p.m.It said the dam took the edge off the fierce flow by holding back about 31,000 cubic meters of flood water per second and discharging the rest.The water level in the dam was 154.3 meters at 8 p.m., an increase of more than 4 meters in 24 hours and well above the 145-meter flood alarm level, the statement said.

PIRAEUS, Greece, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Two Chinese naval escort warships arrived in Greece's Piraeus Port on Monday, kicking off a five-day visit.The vessels, destroyer Guangzhou and frigate Chaohu, are part of the fifth Chinese naval escort flotilla, which just completed the escort mission in the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters to protect commercial ships from pirate attacks.Chinese Ambassador to Greece Luo Linquan and some 200 Chinese nationals came to the port to welcome the arrival of the two Chinese warships. Waving Chinese and Greek national flags, the enthusiastic Chinese living in Greece greeted the Chinese sailors with cheers.They were excited when allowed to tour one of the ships."We are so excited to have a chance to board a Chinese naval destroyer," Wu Hailong, a Chinese businessman in Athens, said, adding that he and his friends come to Piraeus early in the morning from central Athens to welcome the Chinese navy soldiers.Zhang Buren, a Chinese national from Taiwan who has lived in Athens for more than three decades, said he was very impressed by the elegant demeanor of Chinese navy soldiers. CHENGDU, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers Sunday reopened a key road leading to a mudslide-hit county in southwest China's Sichuan Province, which local officials called an important step in speeding up relief and rescue efforts.Traffic resumed on National Highway 213, linking the provincial capital Chengdu to Wenchuan County, on Sunday afternoon after emergency crews worked for nine days to clear the mudslide sludge and debris on the highway.On August 13, mudslides struck parts of Wenchuan, cutting a section of the highway after torrential downpours pelted the Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Aba.At least 15 people have been killed and 31 remain missing, according to the latest available government figures.Wenchuan was the epicenter of the 8.0-magnitude earthquake that jolted Sichuan and neighboring provinces in May 2008. The quake left some 87,000 people dead or missing.Heavy precipitation is particularly dangerous in terrains once shaken by earthquakes, which then become more vulnerable to geological disasters, said Hao Liping, the head of the provincial meteorological bureau.

TAIYUAN, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Eight of nine miners trapped underground Wednesday at a flooded coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province were confirmed alive, while another remains uncontactable, said local mine safety authorities.As of 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, eight miners trapped 1,380 meters below ground had contacted the rescuers and they would be rescued soon.The accident happened around 5 p.m. at Shengping Coal Mine in Jixian County when 23 miners were performing repair work underground. Fourteen miners managed to escape.The Shengping Coal Mine, owned by the Shanxi Coal Transportation and Sales Group Co., Ltd., has an annual capacity of 900,000 tonnes of coal.
