(Xinhua Photo)Photo Gallery>>>    "Your work has ensured the people's security, avoided a huge loss and created a miracle in dealing with large quake-formed lakes," it said.     "The State Council quake relief headquarters would like to express heart-felt gratitude and respect to the troops, geologists and quake and weather technicians working at the front line and those who helped evacuate people in low-lying areas," it said.     The headquarters urged people to continue the work until they were done with follow-up activity in terms of drainage and evacuations.     The Tangjiashan lake was formed after quake-triggered landslides from Tangjiashan Mountain blocked the Tongkou River running through Beichuan County, one of the worst-hit areas in the quake that struck southwestern Sichuan Province.     Had the lake overflowed, it could have threatened some 1 million people on the lower reaches of the lake.     A man-made spillway started to drain the lake on Saturday morning and military engineers used recoil-less guns, bazookas and dynamite on Sunday and Monday to blast boulders and other obstructions in the channel and speed up the outflow.     The lake shrank dramatically on Tuesday as muddy water flowed into the low-lying areas.     About half of the lake's 250 million cubic meters of water has been discharged since the drainage started.     More than 250,000 people in low-lying areas of Mianyang were relocated under a plan based on the assumption that one-third of the lake volume breached the dam.

BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- China's quality watchdog said here on Sunday that the latest tests on Chinese milk powder found no traces of melamine.     It was the fourth round of tests for the industrial chemical since the breaking of the tainted baby formula scandal that left at least three infants dead and sickened more than 50,000 others, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.     The tests covered 39 batches of baby formula from 10 brands in six provinces and 133 batches of other milk powder from 45 brands in 18 provinces, the agency said.     So far, 499 batches of baby formula from 53 brands and 709 batches of other milk powder from 142 brands produced after Sept. 14 have been tested and none contained melamine, it added.     Melamine, often used in the manufacturing of plastics, was added to sub-standard or diluted milk to make the protein levels appear higher.

FUZHOU, July 27 (Xinhua) -- A total of 274,300 people had been evacuated by Sunday afternoon in southeast China's Fujian Province as a strong typhoon was approaching, said the provincial flood control headquarters.     About 52,301 fishing boats had also returned to harbor as of 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. Disaster relief personnel had been helping people on fishing vessels get on shore, said Yang Zhiying, head of the flood control headquarters in Fujian.     Typhoon Fung Wong, the eighth tropical storm of this year, turned into a strong typhoon at 8:00 p.m. Its eye was monitored at the sea about 210 kilometers to the east of Taitung County in Taiwan, according to the provincial observatory.     It moved westward and was forecast to land Taiwan on Sunday night or Monday morning. BEIJING, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Li Keqiang has urged officials and workers at the section of the Three Gorges in southwest China to ensure safety and quality for the project as the flood season draws near.     The member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China Central Committee Political Bureau made the remark at a meeting here on Thursday by the Office of the State Council Three Gorges Project Construction Committee.     The Three Gorges Dam started discharging water earlier this month to lower the water level in the reservoir after excessive rainfall upstream. The discharge would continue as more heavy rain was expected on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. Meanwhile, the flood season is coming and our safety task is very arduous," said Li after hearing reports on the project by teams of experts, the Ministry of Land and Resources and other organizations, among them.     Li stressed the evacuation and relocation of people living in the dam section was a long-term mission. Related organizations should see to their basic life requirements and employment by fulfilling policies on supporting migrants and training them for professional skills.     The world's largest dam, 2,309 meters long and 185 meters high, is expected to help minimize damage caused by floods that might occur only once every 1,000 years.     In addition, Li urged to build an ecological protection area around the dam to prevent water pollution, soil loss and mud-sand silting. He said the section of the Three Gorges Dam should be built as an ecological barrier for the Yangtze.     The 22.5 billion U.S. dollar project was launched in 1993.
