ROME, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- China and Italy are working on a plan to expand their bilateral economic cooperation as the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the China-Italy diplomatic ties is just round the corner, said Chinese Ambassador to Italy Ding Wei on Saturday.The Chinese government is happy to see an enhanced and deepened economic ties between the two countries, said Ding while meeting with Adriano Luci, chairman of the industry association in Italy's northeastern city of Udine.He said Udine enjoyed a well-developed industrial capacity and saw ever-closer ties among Chinese and Italian firms.Ding hoped the association could encourage its member companies to champion the cooperation between Chinese enterprises and their Italian counterparts so as to materialize common development.Luci briefed Ding on Udine's industrial development, its companies' investment in China as well as their participation in the on-going Shanghai World Expo.He said he is willing to see the Italian and Chinese companies having more exchanges and further expanded areas of cooperation.According to Invitalia, the Italian official agency for promoting overseas investment and enterprise development, investment from Chinese companies in Italy has surged since 2000 and mainly goes to three main sectors, namely the automotive industry, logistics and machinery.Bilateral trade volume between China and Italy in the first half of 2010 registered a 36.3 percent rise compared to that of the same period last year, reaching some 20 million U.S. dollars.

FUZHOU, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of thousands of residents have been evacuated as Megi, the 13th typhoon to hit China this year, made landfall in Zhangzhou City in the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian at 12:55 p.m. Saturday, authorities said.As of 2 p.m., 272,300 people have been evacuated, according to officials at the provincial department of civil affairs.Also, there was no immediate report of casualties in Fujian. But disasters caused by typhoon Megi have claimed 11 lives in Taiwan, across the Taiwan Strait.The typhoon has weakened into a strong tropical storm after landing at Liu'ao Town of Zhangpu County, southern Fujian, packing winds of up to 140 km/h.The storm is expected to move northward at 10 km per hour and further weaken to become a tropical depression, according to the National Meteorological Center.The cloud cluster brought by the storm, however, will be hovering over the southern coast of Fujian for some time and is expected to dump more rain in the areas, according to the Fujian provincial meteorological bureau.Zhangpu received 243 mm of rainfall, and neighboring Yunxiao County recorded 332 mm between 8 a.m. Friday and 5:30 p.m. Saturday.The precipitation in cities of Zhangzhou, Xiamen and Quanzhou will reach 100 mm in the next 12 hours, the provincial meteorological bureau said.The storm will also be responsible for heavy rains in Fujian's neighboring provinces of Guangdong and Zhejiang.Influenced by the typhoon, 79 flights at the airport of Xiamen City, also in Fujian, had been canceled as of 8:30 a.m. Saturday, and the Dadeng Bridge, which connects Xiamen City and Dadeng Island, has been closed since 7 a.m.The Ministry of Civil Affairs said late Saturday that it has launched an emergency response by sending working groups to coordinate disaster relief efforts.Also, Sun Chunlan, Communist Party chief in Fujian, has ordered local officials to be on high alert against possible heavy rains and geological disasters.

ANKARA, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and Turkish scholars gathered at a political forum in the Turkish capital of Ankara on Monday to discuss their economic ties, cooperation in the Middle East and coordination within the Group of 20 (G20).Wang Zhongwei, deputy director of China's State Council Information Office which sponsors the forum, said China and Turkey, both G20 members and emerging economies, share interests in such major issues as reforming international financial system and tackling climate change."We should further coordinate and cooperate in those issues. FUZHOU, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Meranti, the 10th typhoon to hit China this year, made landfall at Shishi City in the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian at 3:30 a.m. Friday, according to provincial flood control authorities.A total of 145,300 people in Fujian have been evacuated to avoid rain- and wind-triggered accidents.About 33,200 fishing boats returned to port before 8:00 p.m. Thursday to take refuge from the typhoon.Meranti will bring up to 100 mm of rainfall to Fujian's Quanzhou, Putian, Fuzhou and Ningde cities Friday, according to meteorological authorities' forecast.

BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Marine Corps of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) will conduct a joint drill with their counterpart of Thailand, China's Ministry of National Defense said Wednesday.Called "Blue Assault-2010," the joint drill will take place in Sattahip, Thailand, from Oct. 26 to Nov. 14, a ministry statement said.The joint training exercise will be the first for the PLA marines, according to the statement.The joint drill will focus on anti-terrorism. It will also aim at helping marines from Thailand and China learn from each other, enhance mutual understanding, step up friendly exchange and cooperation in a bid to improve the capabilities of both countries' marine corps to handle new challenges and threats together.
