CHICAGO, Ill. – For the last few years, a refugee resettlement program in Chicago has been teaching women to be part of a social enterprise and improve their skill set. But as the Trump administration makes drastic cuts to the number of refugees accepted into the U.S., resettlement programs like this are bearing the brunt. With knitting needles in hand and sewing machines at the ready, women from all over the world, like Humaira, gather to learn from one another and create. “My name is Humaira. I’m from Afghanistan,” she said with a smile. Humaira is part of Loom, a group of refugee women artisans who congregate each week to create handmade functional crafts. Many have fled war and violence to resettle in the U.S. Loom Chicago Coordinator Rebecca Hamlin-Green says programs like this provide an opportunity for these women that might not otherwise be available. “Refugees in general face a lot of obstacles but women in particular do simply because they may be coming from a culture that doesn't emphasize employment or higher education or many of the skills and privileges that we enjoy,” she said. The program is administered by the Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program in Chicago. Organizers say 70 percent of each sale price goes back to the women. “And then 30 percent goes back into the program so we can purchase their materials and provide the studio space,” explained Hamlin-Green. For many like Humaira, it’s not only a chance to make some extra money but to socialize and find community amongst other women – though they may not share the same language. “I like to make jewelry. I like to make crochet. And also knitting,” she said. But as of next year, the state department is capping the number of refugees allowed into the U.S. to 18,000, the lowest number since the refugee program was established in 1980. That’s an 80 percent cut from the 110,000 cap during the last year of the Obama administration. October became the first month on record in 30 years that not a single refugee was resettled in the U.S. And because federal dollars are tied directly to the number of arrivals, fewer refugees means fewer federal dollars for programs like Loom. Catholic Charities program director and former refugee Elmida Kulovic says they are feeling the pinch. “Basically, our program’s budgets are cut. So, for example in September this program lost four full-time positions,” said Kulovic. For now, the women at Loom are fortunate and thankful for a chance to escape persecution and poverty, while tens of thousands more have to wait. 2582

Classes on social movements tend to focus on the past. But this Black Lives Matter class at the University of Colorado in Boulder focuses on what's happening right now. “So, the whole point is to connect what we're studying in the class to what's happening right now in the real world in real time,” says Professor Dr. Reiland Rabaka. Dr. Rabaka spent 18 months preparing for this class, touching on everything from police brutality and racial profiling to immigration and mental health. “People are documenting it as it evolves as it goes along, and that's really incredible,” the professor says. “And the students are very much a part of a lot of these struggles on the ground.” In March, just miles away from campus, a police officer pulled a gun on a black student picking up trash in his yard. The incident made national news, as well as class curriculum. “I did go to the march for that with like a hundred other people, and then the next day, I had class and talked about it,” says junior Makena Lambert. Lambert says she's been waiting for a class like this since the Black Lives Matter movement started. “No one was teaching me about it in high school, and I remember trying to get people to talk about it at my high school and it really remained unacknowledged,” Lambert says. Several universities nationwide have similar classes. There's even a Black Lives Matter Week of Action at elementary, middle and high schools around the country. For PhD student Jenean McGee, she says the class gives students the tools to become leaders and activists themselves.“It's a political statement. It's activism, and we're able to learn in our everyday lives take what we learned in that class and put it out into the world,” McGee says. 1747

Long Island teachers did a different kind of safety dance to prepare students for the new school year. Teachers at Lenox Elementary School in the Baldwin School District filmed a parody of the Men Without Hats song and altered the lyrics to focus on coronavirus and social distancing. Music Teacher Christine Benedetti and teacher Tom Duffy lead the project. "I think showing the masks and showing us washing our hands is the way we model good behavior for the students," Benedetti said.Students watched the video Tuesday to learn about the health and safety requirements in school. In an instant, the windshield to Rob Weber's small airplane shattered while a thousand feet in the air. “I was pretty much on the edge of blacking out,” he describes. A camera in the cockpit captured it all. When you slow down the video, you can see a bird fly right through the windshield, forcing Weber to declare an emergency as he approached the airport in Fort Myers, Florida. “After I’d taken the hit to the head, I was really dazed,” Weber recalls. “I was having a hard time communicating with them, because I was knocked silly. I really couldn't focus on where I was or what was going on.” The latest data shows there are a record number of bird strikes involving planes, with more than 40 a day on average. A big reason for the spike: more flights and a jump in the bird population. “It's a classic probability situation. More planes and more large birds in the air at the same time,” explains Michael Begier with the National Bird Strike Committee. Begier works with the organization to track incidents and find ways to reduce them. Statistically speaking, the highest chances of being involved in bird strike are from July through October, during the day and while approaching the airport. The accident involving US Airways Flight 1549, known as the Miracle on the Hudson, is perhaps the most memorable and extreme example of how damaging bird strikes can be.
