SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It will take about a month to get the old Family Courthouse in downtown San Diego demolished and the area cleaned up, and once it’s gone, work will begin on what will replace it -- brand new affordable housing units.Piece by piece, the building that once heard divorce, custody, and other domestic issues was torn down. In its place will be a new eight-story building with 120 affordable housing units at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Cedar Street.While it’s been vacant, it was used as a temporary shelter for migrant families seeking asylum. Soon it will become home to senior citizens and other families.To be eligible for this affordable housing, a household must make less than 60% of the area median Income. For San Diego, according to the San Diego County website, it is less than ,000 for one person.County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said the location plays a big part in this project.“Everyone one wants affordable housing as long as it's not near them, but we know this is where housing needs to go. This location is in an urban environment in a downtown setting along transit corridors, walking distance to services is where we need to go,” Fletcher said.After the building is demolished, the next step in this project will be to get community input on the design of the unit. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s no mistake, the Marriott Marquis in Downtown San Diego is playing host to bees on the roof, and it’s all for the benefit of local business. The hive highlights a growing trend called urban beekeeping and the popularity of the practice is creating a lot of buzz. In 2012, the City of San Diego amended its municipal code to allow some residents, along with community gardens and retail farms to keep two beehives. The practice has several benefits, according to the city, including access to fresh, natural honey. The city says urban beekeeping also reduces the number of aggressive Africanized bees in the vicinity of the docile honeybee hive. Beekeeping is also known to reduce carbon footprint due to local production, however, there are some things to be aware of. The primary risk of beekeeping is getting stung. The city says if you plan to keep bees, you can count on bee stings every now and then. Before deciding to keep bees, the City of San Diego urges dialogue with neighbors. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jayce Tingler doesn't plan to be a homebody in the San Diego Padres clubhouse."I want to be shagging in the outfield ... If you're out being active, more organic natural moments will arrive," Tingler told reporters, saying that he doesn't plan to sit in his office often.The Padres introduced the former Texas Rangers coach to the media at Petco Park Thursday. In front of a backdrop of brown and gold, general manager A.J. Preller spoke on Tingler's experience and confidence in him managing the team starting in 2020. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's called "cuffing season" and San Diego is the place to be for participating singles.According to Match, cuffing season is defined as "when daters find someone to settle down within the colder months … and may or may not be a relationship that lasts until the spring."Essentially handcuffing yourself to someone for the winter, before parting ways in the spring.RELATED: The San Diego single scene doesn't offer much, study saysUsing data from its Singles in America study, which Match calls the nation's largest study of singles' dating habits, the site based its rankings on more than 5,000 singles of all ages in the U.S. That study says nationwide, 70 percent of Gen Z and 63 percent of Millennials are searching for love, with about 14 percent of singles saying pressure from family or friends is the key reason they seek out a long-term relationship. The survey adds that only 9 percent of singles are looking to date casually.With that in mind, San Diego ranked as the second best city for cuffing, behind only Indianapolis. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It’s a form of paid time off that predates sick leave.California requires businesses to give an employee up to two hours of paid time off on Election Day to vote, if the employee is unable to vote during non-working hours.“They can take advantage of this paid time off at either the beginning of their shift or at the end of their shift and they can take as much time as they need to vote. But realize that only up to two hours of that time is going to be with pay,” said attorney Dan Eaton.Eaton said Californians have had some sort of mandatory paid time off to vote since 1891, making it the oldest kind of mandatory PTO.Workers who want to take advantage of this must notify their bosses two working days in advance. For people who work Monday through Friday, Eaton said they need to inform their bosses first thing Friday morning, although there are exceptions for unforeseen circumstances.The caveat is that this right is only for employees who cannot vote during their non-working hours.It’s somewhat harder to make that argument this election cycle at a time when every registered voter in California got a mail-in ballot, and early in-person voting at polling places begins Saturday, but Eaton doesn’t expect much pushback from companies.“There could be a court dispute but the optics of that are not going to be good even if, ultimately, the employer is legally justified,” he said.Even though turnout is on pace to be record-breaking this year, the U.S. still ranks near the bottom in voter participation each year. It ranked 26 out of 32 countries in the 2016 election, according to the Pew Research Center.So why not follow some other countries and make Election Day a national holiday?The idea has been floated before but it hasn’t gotten far.
