SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Republican Assemblyman Randy Voepel is being called a valor thief, but his accusers have not produced hard evidence to back up their claims. Navy veteran and Republican state assembly candidate Larry Wilske addressed the media on Monday in front of downtown's USS Midway. He and others say the former mayor of Santee, Voepel, misrepresented his military service record. "This is serious business. It's a slap in the face to veterans," says Wilske. Wilske was joined by private investigator and retired Master Chief Petty Officer Terence Hoey, who has been looking into Voepel's military records.  "He's not a purple heart recipient, although he's repeatedly stated that he is and his chief of staff has doubled down on his claim," says Hoey. They're also alleging that Voepel falsely claimed he had combat experience in Vietnam. However, military discharge documents sent to us by Voepel's staff show that he served on the USS Buchanan and was awarded a ribbon for combat action, and was awarded other honors related to his service in Vietnam. The Wilske supporters believe the discharge documents have been forged. “This document has been altered, thus rendering the form essentially void,” says Hoey. Voepel’s staff denies that Voepel ever claimed to have been awarded a purple heart and 10News couldn’t find proof of the claim, anywhere. Additionally, a military service record provided by Hoey does not include a purple heart award in his list of decorations. Wilske and his supporters say there are multiple credible witness testimonies and video evidence that’ll reveal the whole truth, but they have yet to be fully produced. Wilske and Hoey deny that their allegations of stolen valor are tied to political mudslinging. “The one thing we can't square here is that round peg with Voepel and his wild and comedic claims,” adds Hoey. There was one alleged witness at Monday’s press conference. He said he’s a veteran who met Voepel at a recent political event and claims Voepel lied to his face about his service history. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Residents in a senior mobile home park in Oceanside are worried about speeding drivers after two ducks were hit and killed Wednesday. Neighbors told 10News a mom, dad and baby duck were crossing the road around 5 a.m. when a newspaper delivery driver ran them over.Several residents reported that the driver responsible delivers the San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper and regularly speeds on their narrow roads.The UT told 10News their carriers are employed by a separate company but issued the following statement: "We have learned that a carrier from an independent distributor, who delivers The San Diego Union-Tribune, may have been involved in an auto collision involving a family of ducks. Safety is a priority for us and we support safe and respectful work practices among the vendors with whom we do business. Also, look for the foundation of an old grist mill on the County Historic Resource Board’s list of historic places. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Harbor Police Tuesday arrested a man accused of attacking a teen Syrian refugee on board an MTS trolley, sparking a hate crime investigation. According to police, 26-year-old Adrian Vergara was arrested on an unrelated misdemeanor narcotic charge. During his arrest, Vergara was recognized as being wanted in connection to an ongoing hate crime investigation, police said. The arrest stems from the beating of a 17-year-old Syrian refugee on a San Diego Trolley car Oct. 15. Representatives for the Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans (PANA), who spoke on the teen's behalf, told 10News the teen was speaking Arabic while on FaceTime with a friend when a man on the trolley asked him, "Where are you from? Are you Mexican?"RELATED: Teen attacked on trolley in possible hate crimeThe teen reportedly responded, "No, I am Arab."According to the teen, the man then started punching him and cursing while using racial slurs. The victim reportedly exited the trolley at the 62nd Street station in Encanto. He said the man also got off the trolley and left the scene.Numerous people reportedly watched as the victim was attacked, but no one stepped in to help him. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police arrested a woman last week for reportedly sex trafficking two young girls. According to police, the woman, identified as Desiree Morton, called officers on July 17 to report that she was a victim of domestic violence and that her boyfriend stole her vehicle. When officers responded to the unspecified location, they found Morton, along with two other girls police say appeared to be younger than 18 and had no identification cards. Police say the girls also had tattoos along their jaws. The two girls later told investigators they were 14 and 15-years-old. Officers arrested Morton after she reportedly admitted to prostituting the girls. The girls were taken into protective custody. 732
