SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Customers at two Walmart stores in the North County say they received hundreds of dollars in fake bills.Last Thursday night, Billy Wagner went to the Walmart on Center Drive in San Marcos and cashed out a ,000 money transfer from a friend on the east coast."Watched the lady count the money on the counter three times," said Wagner.On the same night - and about five miles away in Escondido - John Whittingham stopped by the Walmart Neighborhood Market on East Valley Parkway to cash a check, receiving four 0 bills. Questions linger. Where did the money come from? How many other customers got the bills? And how did the money slip past Walmart's safeguards?"I never figured going into Walmart, counterfeit money would be floating," said Whittingham.Whittingham did get his money back from Walmart. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a State of Emergency Proclamation Friday clearing the way for firefighters to jump on projects meant to protect communities.Newsom said we're seeing larger and more dangerous wildfires than ever before and as a state we need to change our approach."Our world is changing, the wets are getting a lot wetter, the hots hotter and the dry, drier," he said.Alpine shared in the devastation last year; the West Fire leveled neighborhoods and left dozens homeless.CalFire Director Michael Mohler said ten crews across the state will be activated under the proclamation to clear brush and conduct controlled burns. They will also work with 110 members of the National Guard.The proclamation focuses on vulnerable communities. CalFire's Priority Fuel Reduction Project List includes two communities in San Diego County, Guatay and Crest. "Some of them have gone through some kind of environmental review," Director of the Sierra Club, Katheryn Phillips said.The U.S. Forest Service plans prescribed burns a year in advance to account for the environmental processes."We already know the areas of concern and we know how the fire is going to react to those areas, so we have a lot of biologists come in, a lot of fire experts come in and determine which areas are good for burning," Public Affairs Officer for Cleveland National Forest Olivia Walker said.Under the proclamation, environmental regulations are suspended, concerning environmentalists."If it's a butterfly mating season and it's an endangered species, it's not going to be the proper time to burn," Walker said."Could an unintended consequence be a mudslide?" Phillips added.Mohler said there's nothing to worry about, saying the proclamation solely streamlines the paperwork. Brain Balance of San Diego offers a holistic program that specializes in getting to the root of children's challenges."Those challenges might be academically, socially, or behavioral, says office director Amanda Lee. "We see a lot of parents who come in with children struggling with attention, and sensory processing."And at Brain Balance, they stay away from medications. "That just looks at the tip of the iceberg, and is a band-aid."They believe in the power of exercise, with workouts such as jump rope, balance beam, and planks just to give a few examples."It's fantastic for the brain, but the type of exercise we do here is very intentional. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the country celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, people in San Diego are looking back at how companies in this city helped NASA achieve the historic flight.You could argue that, if not for San Diego, the moon landing would never have gotten off the ground, or landed safely on the moon.Ryan Aeronautical Company built the lunar radar system that helped guide the lunar lander as it touched down on the moon's surface.General Dynamics built the Atlas Rockets that took some of the flights into outer-space."They didn't take them all the way up to the moon with the Atlas, but they helped set the stage to move forward to doing it," says San Diego Air and Space Museum Marketing Director David Neville.The museum has an Atlas Rocket on display at Gillespie Field, towering above the skyline. It also has the Apollo 9 capsule at Balboa Park.One of the docents at the museum worked on the antennaes that helped the capsules stay in constant contact with mission control."I can bring people over here and point to it and say that's what I did," says Ronald Pitcher, who volunteers at the museum and was an engineer working on the Mercury capusule, the Gemini and the Apollo spacecrafts. "It's a proud moment to be able to do that."Pitcher says he feels privileged to have played a small role in landing a man on the moon. He wishes the US had sent more people up."There's no question in my mind that we should go back," he says. "We should have done it when we had the technology and the poeple and experience and facilities in place."Saturday night, on the 50th anniversary of the landing, the Air and Space Museum will host a party to celebrate.
