SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Emily Lake opened Sisters Pizza in Hillcrest last summer to honor her sister Kate, who passed away at an age too young.Her restaurant features a wall of framed pictures of sisters and people who are like sisters - many who have become regulars at the neighborhood eatery. "People have contributed pictures of them and their sisters, them and their friends, and it's not just women. It's anybody who has a close relationship," Lake says. Lake says business had been going even better than expected, until the coronavirus outbreak. Now, her restaurant and those across the county have been reduced to takeout and delivery. "Being any sort of small business owner, and such a brand new one too, we're just navigating scary waters and doing the best we can," says Lake, who owns the restaurant with her husband Trevor. Lake estimates that 60 to 70 percent of their revenue is gone forever. That's because standard insurance policies do not cover loss of business for viruses and bacteria. "I thought that it would be a force majeure or considered an Act of God, and unfortunately it is not," Lake says. "Even in our catastrophe insurance, which would cover earthquake or other natural disasters, this pandemic is not included."But those in the insurance industry say it's an uncertain situation. That's because businesses aren't contracting or closing because they themselves have become infected. Instead, they are doing so because the government is telling them to. One San Diego insurance broker told 10News businesses should make a claim regardless. If it's denied, so be it. Lake said she'd look into that option."At this point we'll pull out all the stops in order to stay in business," Lake said. Meanwhile, California's Department of Insurance is advising all business owners to contact their insurance companies to go over options. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For the first time in nearly 100 years, an integrated company of male and female recruits at MCRD San Diego are about to begin their journey into becoming Marines. These future Marines will be led by graduates from MCRD's first ever integrated Drill Instructor Course. Now the mission of the course is to screen, train, and further develp leadership and command presence of selected Marines, in order to successfully perform duties of a drill instructor."We are taking them from the leadership skills, that they had in the fleet, and further refining them here," says Major Lynn Stow, Director of the MCRD San Diego Drill Instructor Course. "The drill instructor's goal is to successfully transfer recruits into United States Marines."Fifty-seven Marines are scheduled to graduate from the grueling 57 day course, and for the very first time, the graduating class will include 3 females."Getting the opportunity to come here was almost like divine intervention, everything just kind of fell into place," says student Sargent Stephanie Fahl. "To come here and make it this far, I'm really proud of myself."These future drill instructors at MCRD are looking forward to changing the lives of young 17 and 18-year-old recruits. "The change I'd like to instill in the recruits is to obviously maintain that discipline that's a staple of recruit training,"says student Sargent Stephanie Jordi. "I'd also like to inspire them and teach them how to become leaders even from that lowest level." Student Sargent Ikea Kaufman feels being a drill instructor is about teaching recruits how to be men and women."There is more to life than social media and all that. Rip currents are currents of water that flow out from shore, potentially pulling swimmers and surfers away from land, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. 63 people in California died in rip currents between 1999 and 2013, second only to Florida in fatalities. You can greatly increase your chances of survival by swimming at a beach with lifeguards, the USLA says. The odds of drowning while swimming at a USLA-affiliated lifeguard protected beach is 1 in 18 million, the group claims.Anyone in the water - or thinking about getting into the water - should look for a gap of seemingly calm water between areas of breaking waves, a difference in water color, or a line of foam or debris moving out to sea. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Firefighters in San Diego are rallying around a beloved firefighter suddenly in the fight of his life, after a cancer diagnosis."His nickname is 'Big Joe,' because he's bigger than life," said firefighter Russell Castillo.Castillo says Engineer/Paramedic Joe Odom, 49, is known as the light switch in a room."His smile lights up a room. His energy lights up a room. He makes everyone feel valued ... It’s our time to return that love," said Castillo.It’s been an emotional time for the 23-year veteran of San Diego Fire-Rescue. He recently discovered some swelling in his groin area. Doctors diagnosed him with lymphoma, cancer that begins in the immune system. He’s awaiting more testing for a prognosis.It comes as Odom’s wife Lisa battles serious health issues, including a lung condition and lupus."She’s giving me inspiration for what’s she’s been through," said Odom.Lisa is immunocompromised. Odom, as a paramedic on the front lines, has been trying to keep her safe, while still serving the community during a pandemic."It's scary for a lot of folks. I just want to be there, anyway I know how ...
