OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A hotel approved for Oceanside Boulevard is frustrating many residents.City leaders who supported the 99-room Fairfield Inn & Suite say concerns brought up about the location were addressed by staff. They also told 10News that, once complete, the hotel will bring in more than 0,000 tax dollars per year.Regardless, residents who live in the area say the site selected will create traffic problems. Beyond that - it will mean that their neighborhood will get noisy. "This location is difficult to get in and out of," one resident said. "There's no benefit to being right there."City leaders say the location is ideal because it's close to Interstate-5. 715
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A California judge on Friday rejected the plea deals of two men who were charged with 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter after a 2016 California warehouse fire.In handing down his decision, Judge James Cramer said 48-year-old Derick Almena didn't accept "full responsibility and remorse" for the fatal blaze which occurred during an unlicensed concert at the dilapidated Oakland warehouse known as the "Ghost Ship."The plea deal had called for Almena to be sentenced to nine years in prison and 28-year-old Max Harris to six years. Relatives of victims who died in the blaze had slammed the proposed sentences as too lenient.RELATED: Plea deal reached in Oakland warehouse fireAuthorities have alleged Almena rented the warehouse and illegally converted it into an entertainment venue and residences before the fire. Harris was accused of helping him collect rent and schedule concerts.Prosecutors said the two men had turned the warehouse into a residential "death trap" by cluttering it with highly flammable knick-knacks, blocking the building's few exits and failing to make adequate safety precautions before inviting the public inside.Almena's attorney, Tony Serra, told reporters after Friday's hearing that he will take the case to trial.RELATED: All 36 victims of Ghost Ship fire died of smoke inhalationCyrus Hoda, the brother of victim Sarah Hoda, had called the plea bargain a "sweetheart deal" and labeled Almena and Harris as "culture vultures" trying to become San Francisco Bay Area arts players by luring people to a dangerous place to live and party.Almena's wife and three children also lived in the warehouse but were staying in a nearby hotel the night of the fire. His wife, Micah Allison, and one of their daughters sat quietly in court alongside the grieving families.Dressed in jail garb on Thursday, Almena looked unemotionally at the relatives as they testified, while Harris stared at the judge, who approved the plea deal last month.Cramer told relatives of victims to try to keep their emotions in check during the testimony, which he said would be "a heart-wrenching hearing as befits the enormous loss in this case."Almena and Harris could have faced life in prison if convicted at a trial. They already have spent a year behind bars.Investigators from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said they were unable to determine a cause of the blaze.Victims' relatives allege in lawsuits that the Oakland Fire Department failed to inspect the warehouse annually as required and that inspectors would have discovered the illegal conversions.Alex Katz, a spokesman for the city attorney, declined to comment. The lawsuits also claim Pacific Gas & Electric Co. failed to properly monitor, inspect and repair electrical equipment that provided power to the warehouse.PG&E said in a statement that it cooperated with the investigation and that a review of its records found no electrical problems at the building in the 10 years before the fire.Warehouse owner Chor Ng, who has not been charged, did not return a phone message seeking comment on Thursday. 3143

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGTV) - Smoke from wildfires had many California residents staying indoors Sunday but the Los Angeles Chargers and Oakland Raiders game carried on at the Oakland Coliseum. The Air Quality Index for much of San Francisco and the surrounding areas was in the Environmental Protection Agency’s “red” zone, indicating the air was unhealthy to breathe.Fans and coaches donned masks while players were forced to inhale the smoke on the field. The NFL had monitored the situation but the AQI never got near 200, the level where the game would have needed to be moved, the Associated Press reported.Philip Rivers led the Chargers to a sixth straight win, defeating the Raiders 20-6.RELATED: Interactive Maps: Woolsey?and Hill Fires / Interactive Map: Camp FireThe EPA warning said people with heart or lung disease, older adults and children should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion.A smoke advisory remained in effect Sunday due to the Woolsey Fire, which was causing unhealthy air quality affecting everyone in areas directly impacted by smoke, including coastal Los Angeles County, the San Fernando Valley, the Santa Clarita Valley, the San Gabriel Valley, the San Gabriel Mountains and the Pomona-Walnut Valley. The South Coast Air Quality Management District said western winds brought unhealthful levels of smoke and ash particulate into most of the South Coast Air Basin, which includes Orange County and non-desert areas of Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, overnight. However, on Sunday morning, Santa Ana winds from the northeast had started to push smoke away from southern Orange and Riverside counties and were expected to continue to alleviate conditions in the northern San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles metro area through the day and into Monday.RELATED: Despite fires, San Diego's air quality remains favorableSmoke was expected to remain at unhealthy levels closest to the fire, in the western San Fernando Valley and northwest coastal Los Angeles County.``It is difficult to tell where ash or soot from a fire will go, or how winds will affect the level of dust particles in the air, so we ask everyone to be aware of their immediate environment and to take actions to safeguard their health,'' said Dr. Muntu Davis, health officer for Los Angeles County, in an earlier statement.Wildfire smoke is a mixture of small particles, gases and water vapor, and the primary health concern is the small particles, which can cause burning eyes, runny nose, scratchy throat, headaches and bronchitis, health officials said. In people with sensitive conditions, the particles can cause difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing, fatigue, and/or chest pain.City News Service contributed to this report. 2754

Ontario’s minister of sport said in a speech that the Ontario Hockey League will not have bodychecking this season.Lisa MacLeod told the Empire Club of Canada that removing purposeful physical contact is a necessity for all sports in the province to slow the spread of COVID-19“Not just in the OHL, not just in hockey in general, but in all sports,” MacLeod said. "We’re in a very serious game right now and the reality is we have to take those public health precautions.”The OHL announced Thursday that it plans to start a shortened season on Feb. 4, the last of Canada’s three major junior leagues to release a schedule.“Until such time as we arrive at an agreed upon Return to Play protocol with the Government of Ontario, the League will have no further comment on the matter of body contact,” the OHL said in a statement. The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League season started earlier this month, but the schedule has been affected by several COVID-19 outbreaks as well as provincial government restrictions. After play was restricted to Maritimes Division teams the past two weeks, some Quebec teams are scheduled to resume play this weekend. The Western Hockey League plans to start its season on Jan. 8. 1215
