SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego area firefighters are being thanked for their hard work with free admission to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.Firefighters and up to three guests will receive free one-day admission to the Escondido park in September. The deal is being offered by California Coast Credit Union and San Diego Zoo Global.“Firefighters are true heroes and we are proud to join San Diego Zoo Global in recognizing them for their tremendous efforts to keep us all safe from fires,” said Cal Coast President & CEO Todd Lane. “As part of our partnership with the City of San Diego, we will continue to look for ways to serve and support San Diego Fire Department personnel.”The fast response of San Diego County firefighters was critical in putting out the Pasqual, Rangeland and Cloverdale Fires near the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. In two cases, park employees prepared crates to evacuate the animals, if needed.Firefighters must present department identification or union identification with a photo, in addition to a personal ID, at any Safari Park ticket window.      1111

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County will plan their own guidance around trick-or-treating and celebrating Halloween next month while staying safe during the pandemic.County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten said the county will develop guidance surrounding how to safely celebrate the holiday while adhering to public health orders. Wooten added that they will also take cues from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the agency's guidance as well.Wooten said the county plans to have those recommendations by the end of the month."During the cloud of the pandemic, we have to get joy where we can. So we will be awaiting CDC guidelines but we'll be coming up with a process, a protocol," said Wooten. "For example, a drive-thru Halloween event to allow children to don their Halloween costumes and we plan to probably have that codified by the end of this month.RELATED: Los Angeles County backs off trick-or-treating ban, but advises strongly against it"But right now, there is no discrete plan."Tuesday, Los Angeles County issued guidelines that banned trick-or-treating and trunk-or-treat, in which children take candy from parked cars, under the county health order. Wednesday, county officials walked back that guidance and said the trick-or-treating is "not recommended.""Trick-or-treating, we're highly recommending that it not happen," Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said. "We don't think it's an appropriate activity during a pandemic. ... You know, there's no guarantee when you go trick-or-treating that your child goes up to a house where the person who opens the door is wearing a face covering. And when you don't know the people opening the door, there's no guarantee they're not sick and that the candy they're passing out that they've touched may not be safe for you to want your child to be sharing."Wednesday, San Diego County reported 247 new coronavirus cases, bringing the region's total to 41,324. The county also has 22 community outbreaks in the last seven days. What's unclear is how California's new color-coded tier system to affect how any holiday guidance is established. Last month, the state issued a new tier system that divided counties into four tiers. San Diego is currently in the second tier, red or "substantial," reserved for counties with four to seven cases per 100,000 and 5% to 8% testing positivity. Wednesday, the county reported that one of those metrics, case rate, neared 7 cases while positivity sat at 4.2%. A county needs to display metrics in a higher or lower tier for two consecutive weeks before being moved to that tier. 2630

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced Wednesday that the San Diego Padres will oversee the creation of an all-new, mixed-use district outside of Petco Park.Moving forward with plans to revitalize the neighborhood adjacent to the downtown ballpark, Faulconer announced the winning proposal to transform the space in the East Village known as Tailgate Park into the East Village Quarter -- a project consisting of retail, housing, open space, parking, and more, with the Padres as a partner. The area is bordered by 12th and Imperial avenues and K and 14th streets. The City of San Diego has owned the four blocks since the ballpark district was developed.Last December, the city formalized its intent to sell or lease the space, and on Wednesday, Faulconer said the Padres came up with the best proposal to revitalize the area. The city also held a virtual open house to get public input on the top two proposals and the community’s priorities for the development.Padres President Erik Gruepner said they want the space to embody the “live, work, play” vision of the East Village, so much of which is already influenced by the team’s presence.Gruepner spoke about holding neighborhood festivals and farmers markets to help create a feeling of community, turning a parking lot into a neighborhood. When it comes to parking, the Padres plan to add 600 more spaces than what currently exists in a multi-level structure. The cost for the project is expected to exceed billion. The proposal will go to the City Council for a review and vote, and if approved, the goal is to have a final plan in place by next year. 1637

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County remained on the state’s COVID-19 monitoring list as of Monday, but Gov. Gavin Newsom said during a news conference that the county could be dropped from the list by Tuesday.Sunday, Aug. 16, was the fifth consecutive day San Diego County reported fewer than 100 positive coronavirus tests.State and county officials have said counties would be removed from the monitoring list if rates remain below 100 positive cases per 100,000 people for three straight days.Of the state's 58 counties, 42 remain on that list; five counties were added, with Santa Cruz County falling off Aug. 14."This is a dynamic list. People come on, people come off, the numbers shift every single week," Newsom said Monday. "I anticipate this week the numbers to shift again and it looks like, all things being equal and the latest reporting period -- 24-hour reporting period, which we will have later this evening -- it's very likely San Diego will join the list of those counties removed. So, likely tomorrow."County health officials were expected to announce the latest local statistics on Monday afternoon. For K-12 schools to potentially reopen for in-person instruction, San Diego County will have to reach 14 straight days with positive virus cases below 100 per 100,000 people. As many as 48 elementary schools in the county have filed waivers that in hopes of returning to in-person classes. 1417

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County Supervisors are responding to a Team 10 investigation detailing the death of a child in foster care.Tyler Walter died Sept. 22, 2018. The cause of death listed on his autopsy is blunt head trauma. In a claim filed against the County of San Diego, Lisa Walter stated that her son Tyler, "was healthy when he was in my care he was thriving, he needed his mother and placing him with my 19-year-old niece was negligent."A representative for San Diego County Supervisors Greg Cox and Nathan Fletcher, Co-Chairs of the county's Child & Family Strengthening Advisory Board, says they can't comment on the specific situation in question because it represents ongoing litigation.RELATED: Mother claims San Diego County was negligent in death of her child while in Foster CareThe supervisors did release a statement about the child welfare system overall saying, "Any day a child dies is a horrifically sad day. Our child welfare system in America exists to protect children and preserve families, and we take that responsibility seriously. As a County, we are currently engaged in the process of evaluation and change to ensure we are doing everything possible to protect children and preserve families."In March the County Board of Supervisors approved creating the Child and Family Strengthening Advisory Board to help prevent and respond to child abuse and neglect.According to county officials, the new advisory board will serve as a platform for collaboration and transparent monitoring of the child welfare system to ensure the safety and well-being of children and families.A grand jury report released in June found multiple gaps in institutional safety and training in the Child Welfare Services division of San Diego County's Health and Human Services Agency. The grand jury found that most social workers are overworked and often spend as much or more time on administrative work than interacting with foster children and families, resulting in poor communication and coordination.CWS staff and foster parents also lack the proper training to offer trauma-informed care or support for victims of human trafficking, according to the report. 2188
