SACO, Maine – A man in Maine has been arrested after authorities say he was caught putting razor blades into pizza dough that was then sold to customers. The Saco Police Department says it was notified of the tampered food by the city’s Hannaford Supermarket last Tuesday. Officers say a customer had purchased a Portland Pie pizza dough and later discovered razor blades inside.“The review of store security surveillance footage revealed a person tampered with the packaging of several Portland Pie pizza doughs,” wrote the department in a statement.Police have identified the suspect as 38-year-old Nicholas Mitchell and said he’s a former associate of It’ll Be Pizza company, which manufactures products for Portland Pie.A warrant was issued for Mitchell’s arrest and he was later taken into custody in Dover, New Hampshire, according to police. As a result of the incident, Hannaford Supermarkets has issued a recall for all Portland Pie branded products sold at its stores. The supermarket chain says customers who purchased Portland Pie pizza dough or cheese sold in its delis between Aug. 1 and Oct. 11 should not consume the products. They may return it to the store for a full refund.Additionally, the chain says it has removed all Portland Pie products from its shelves and paused replenishment of the products indefinitely, “after what is believed to be further malicious tampering incidents involving metal objects inserted into Portland Pie products.”Law enforcement is continuing to investigate the tampering. If you have purchased Portland Pie pizza dough and have found razor blades inside the dough, call the Saco Police Department's Detective Division at (207)282-8216. 1692

ROCKFORD, Ill. -- As many police departments continue to struggle to reflect the diversity of the cities and municipalities, some are looking to a return to old school policing as a solution. One city grappling with violent crime is embedding officers in the thick of it. It’s a way to have a personal stake in policing their own neighborhood.Eighteen-year police force veteran Patrice Turner knows the streets of Rockford, Illinois, like the back of her hand.“This is my stomping grounds," said Turner. "I used to walk up and down this street. You know when I went to West Middle School here.”She grew up in Rockford, a town about 75 miles northwest of Chicago that has one of the highest crime rates in the country.“I drive through the lot and make sure it's OK. It’s actually been robbed a few times,” said Turner as she patrolled her route near a shopping center. For the last three years, she’s been part of a unique policing program working as a resident officer community keeper or ROCK.“They're actually living in that community,” explained Rockford’s assistant deputy chief, Mike Dalke. “They have a car squad car that they take home that's parked in front of their house and their job really is to build capacity, build trust within that community."Turner lives rent-free, embedded in the community. Her name and number are boldly displayed outside her house.“So yeah, there is there is little sense of anonymity, that's for sure,” said Turner.Police residency requirements fell out of favor in the early 20th century.According to government data, in 75 U.S. cities with the largest police forces, on average 60% of police officers live outside the city limits.Research suggests residency requirements don’t necessarily translate to public confidence in the police.Still, the ROCK program hopes personal interaction will build trust at a time when relations between police and communities of color across the nation are inflamed.Turner knows mending those relationships won’t come until the fractures of the past are dealt with. She says she’s trying to do that as an officer who has a vested stake in the community.“You form stronger bonds, you know people no longer see you as just a police officer. They see you as a human,” she said. “They see the officer as the person behind that uniform.”The department says it plans to hire a third ROCK officer soon and believes the model could work in other cities and municipalities. 2443

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- California's earthquake early warnings will be a standard feature on all Android phones, bypassing the need for users to download the state's MyShake app in order to receive alerts. The Governor's Office of Emergency Services worked with Google, the maker of Android, to build the quake alerts into all phones that run the operating system. The technology does not predict earthquakes. It is designed to take data from seismic sensors and send warnings to potentially affected areas if projected shaking is at a certain level of intensity. The MyShake technology was developed by the University of California, Berkeley, and released in 2019. 673

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — As California Gov. Gavin Newsom weighs his pick to serve out the rest of Vice President-elect Kamala Harris' Senate term, he's facing pressure to name a Latino or a Black woman. California has never had a Latino senator even though the state is nearly 40% Latino. But without Harris, who is Black, there will be no Black women in the 100-member Senate. The situation has some observers frustrated with the persistent lack of racial diversity in the Senate and what they view as both parties' failure to do much about it. With the pressure on Newsom, those with a stake in his choice are lobbying openly. 637
