"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds."While it isn’t the official U.S. Postal Service motto, it’s something mailwoman Amy Bezerra has kept to for the past 25 years. And now, we can add COVID-19 to that list of things that postal workers press through.Bezerra is one of almost half a million mail carriers for the USPS, and for the last eight of those years, she’s had the same route just north of Denver, Colorado."My max is usually six years and then I’m like, 'Eh, it’s time to move on and learn a different area.' Which is really hard, because you get close to your customers," said Bezerra. But because of COVID-19, the part of her job she loves the most has now changed."My customers, being outside, being able to involve yourself with other people, giving customer service to a wide variety of people," said Bezerra. "I don’t see near as many people. Your customers, if they do come out, it’s very rare anymore."People are ordering things now more than ever."A lot of people are not going out to stores purchasing. They’re staying at home and doing it on the computer, which gives us more parcels, which is awesome," said Bezerra. It’s deemed an essential public service, critical to the nation’s infrastructure, and critical to so many lives. However, the carriers also provide a service that many wouldn’t think."You get to know the people, the kids, the pets who should be around in the neighborhood, who shouldn’t, and people’s schedules," said Bezerra. So, a few years ago, when one of her customers didn’t pick up his mail for a few days, she knew something was wrong. She called for help."He had just been real sick and completely dehydrated. But every time he’d get up, he’d pass out and hit his head," said Bezerra. The ER doctors said he wouldn’t have made it 24 hours."I have five more years, and I have really bonded with these people out here. I’ve pretty much promised them, unless the post office takes it away from me, I’m here for five more years with them," said Bezerra. So, snow, rain, heat, gloom of night, nor COVID-19 will stop Bezerra from delivering to her customers. 2188

(CNN) -- A fragment of wood believed to be from Jesus' manger is back in the Holy Land just in time for Christmas. The tiny inches long relic was first taken out of the Middle East in the 7th century when St. Sophronius, Patriarch of Jerusalem, donated it to Pope Theodore I. It remained in Rome's Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore until now.The wooden relic arrived on Saturday at its permanent home in Bethlehem in time for Advent and the beginning of the Christmas season. Many Christians say it represents the very essence of their faith."It touches me so deeply, so deeply because I really can find the little child Jesus inside, I really can find his presence and it's like the cradle is moving into my heart," Barbara Boterberg told CNN at a special service at the Our Lady of Peace Chapel at the Notre Dame Jerusalem center to commemorate its arrival.Boterberg, a Christian living in Israel, says she has been praying for 40 years to see a piece of Jesus' crib return to its rightful place in the Middle East."Since it's here my heart is jumping all the time with joy, that God became a man humble enough to sleep in a manger," added Boterberg.Pope Francis allowed the relic to be returned to the region, according to Father Francesco Patton, Custos of the Holy Land.He told CNN that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas had been asking the Pope to return the stone and wood manger to Bethlehem for at least one Christmas season for years. "It was important, the request of Mr. Abbas, it was very important," said Fr. Patton.Fr. Patton said the entire crib was considered too fragile to move. Nonetheless, he says the small wooden relic is an important symbol that will now be permanently enshrined inside St. Catherine's Church, adjacent to the Church of the Nativity in Manger Square in Bethlehem"This is a special day because today we received the relic of the manger that Pope Francis offered as a gift to the custody of the holy land," said Fr. Patton.Bethlehem, the birth place of Jesus, lies in the West Bank, part of the Palestinian territories. For years Abbas has tried to work with the Vatican to encourage Christian pilgrims to make the trip to Bethlehem despite security and political concerns, according to Fr. Patton.During the celebratory mass in Jerusalem, the Vatican's Apostolic Nuncio to Israel, Leopoldo Girelli, described the relic as a potent reminder of the birth of Jesus and a piece of reality that people everywhere can grasp."People of today are people of the tangible, of what they can experience empirically. This relic is something tangible that brings us back to the precise moment in history when god himself became man," said Girelli. 2691

YPSILANTI, Mich. — One entrepreneur thinks flying cars will one day change the way Americans travel — even though his creation almost cost him his life.Sanjay Dhall, the founder of Detroit Flying Car Company, is still recovering from a December crash at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti. Dhall said he was testing out the controls in his flying car prototype when he accidentally took off and found himself 150 feet in the air.“It was a miraculous escape. I did break a lot of bones from head to toe,” Dhall said. “… But amazingly the machine took the majority of the impact and I survived.”The machine was destroyed.“One wrong calculation can mean the difference between life and death,” Dhall said. He says he now is more committed than ever to getting the technology right.“I still want to get back and build another prototype, a demonstrator vehicle that will succeed,” Dhall said.A study released this week by the University of Michigan motivates him. It found that for trips of about 60 miles and longer, a fully-loaded flying car carrying a pilot and three passengers had 52% lower greenhouse gas emissions and time savings compared to ground-based gasoline powered cars with an average vehicle occupancy of 1.54."Consumers could be incentivized to share trips, given the significant time savings from flying versus driving," The study's author, Akshat Kasliwal, said. The study found flying cars would travel the 60 miles much faster, resulting in a time savings of about 80 percent compared to cars driving on the road. When compared to electric cars, fully-loaded flying cars still had 6% lower greenhouse gas emissions on trips longer than 60 miles.“When flight happens, constraints are gone. And when constraints go away things have a way of going cleaner ways,” Dhall said. The study did find that on short trips, it is more efficient to stay on the ground.Dhall points out that his prototype features wings that retract into the vehicle, allowing travel by road or sky. In theory, he says it could be an overall greener way of traveling. He says he named his company in honor of the Detroit inventors who changed the way people around the world travel. He believes flying cars will do the same in the future. 2229
