SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Whether its the search for something warm or just a turn to the comforts of home, this past winter gave San Diegans more pause for certain cuisines.Food ordering platform Grubhub looked at food delivery trends from Dec. 22, 2018, to March 13, 2019, to analyze San Diego's winter food trends by users compared to the rest of the year.Leading the pack were bean burritos saw a 362 percent increase in popularity during that time span, more than 100 percent more than the next most popular dish, according to Grubhub.RELATED: Inventive eggs Benedict, dumpling soup highlight San Diego's foodie scene on Yelp listGyro wraps experienced a 258 percent increase in orders, while vegetable ramen orders shot up 222 percent. Chicken wraps (165 percent increase) and chow mein (157 percent increase) rounded out the top five menu items.The "science" could correspond with winter's below average temperatures — and perhaps the heavy rains. Many of the most popular items ordered were soups.Heading into spring, the app went further and looked at orders over the spring 2017 and 2018 to predict what San Diegans would likely order. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When President Trump visited San Diego in September, he made a special trip down to the border to tout the wall and its technological advances. The president has made border security a major part of his term, even calling for the addition of 5,000 border patrol agents.A new study from San Diego State University says the increased emphasis on stopping illegal crossings and drug smuggling could make those very agents the targets of corruption and bribe offers. "When one door is closed, they try to find another one which is open," said David Janscisc, the public affairs professor at SDSU who authored the study. Janscisc says the harder it gets for smugglers to get people or drugs into the U.S., the more likely they are to seek help from agents at ports of entry. "You can clear a car full of drugs just by not inspecting it," he said. Janscisc isn't saying Customs and Border Protection is corrupt, but wanted to study how corruption occurs. He based his study off of 160 cases of CBP corruption over 10 years, noting the agency has 60,000 employees. Janscisc found the employees with less than five years of experience were more likely to be involved in drug-related corruption. However, those who were there longer were more likely to commit immigration-related offenses, such as falsifying paperwork to help get someone into the country. In a statement, Customs and Border Protection said applicants go through a strict hiring process that could include polygraph tests. "After the hiring process, CBP applies proactive measures in the form of training, rules geared to ensure workplace integrity and oversight and management of frontline officers and agents by CBP leadership at every level," the statement said. Janscisc said it took two years to complete his study, relying largely on court documents and investigative news reports. 1873

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Homeless hospital patients in San Diego are sometimes dumped back on the streets after receiving treatment. Some of them - then turned away from shelters who don't have enough room. California lawmakers are trying to change that.It breaks Kim Peterson's heart to see her friend, Heather, living on this Chula Vista sidewalk."This is a picture of us together," said Peterson. "We've become more like sisters."Heather is constantly in and out of hospitals."She's had multiple strokes," Peterson said. "She needs to use a wheelchair to get around."But, the care stops once the hospitals let her go."She was released back to the street with a bus pass," Peterson told 10News. "It was raining, with no place to go, just a blanket."Another time, Heather was taken to a shelter - but turned away.  "They dropped her off far from where she felt safe," Peterson said. "They took her downtown where there wasn't a bed for her."One hospital told 10News they give patients a list of resources, but the patient has to coordinate them on their own.  Senate Bill 1152 would require hospitals to confirm the shelters have room before they're discharged."What does she need to do?" said Peterson. "I will help her do whatever she needs to do to get housed, to be safe, instead, she's laying on the sidewalk."The current problem leaves the homeless in their most vulnerable state and back on the streets. "It's very discouraging to think that we can't do better than that," Peterson said. Today, Heather got news that a nursing facility has extra room. "She will never get better," Peterson said. "She's gonna be in this permanent state of disability."Heather will be celebrating her 60th birthday next month, with a roof over her head. Many others won't be as lucky. "We can find a solution," said Peterson. "I know we can."   1957

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two people were arrested on suspicion of vandalizing a school in the College East area late Thursday night.At around 11 p.m., San Diego police were called to Harriet Tubman School on 6880 Mohawk St. in response to two people seen on the campus.When officers arrived, the two people ran away. Following a brief foot chase, police caught the pair and took them into custody.Police said officers discovered a classroom with a window that was smashed, a vandalized TV screen inside a room and graffiti.Officers also found fireworks they believe the two people planned to set off. 603
