SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County Crime Stoppers and investigators from the North Coastal Sheriff's Station are looking for a woman, possibly pregnant, accused of using counterfeit bills at several businesses in North County.According to investigators, on April 14, 2018, a woman used a counterfeit 0 bill at Yogurt 101 located at 152 N. Highway 101 in Solana Beach.Investigators said on April 19, 2018, the same female suspect used another counterfeit 0 bill at Sun Splash located at 2673 Via De La Valle in Del Mar. They also said the woman is believed to have used a counterfeit 0 bill at a business in Carlsbad.The suspect is described as a 25 to 35-year-old Hispanic woman who stands between 5’4” and 5’6” tall. She has long, dark wavy hair and a tattoo on the right side of her upper chest. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two girls were rescued at Sunset Cliffs by teenage bystanders on Friday after being swept out to sea.Local still photographer Jim Grant was hoping to capture the sunset at Sunset Cliffs Friday evening. But he got much more than just a beauty shot."There were some crazy things going on," Grant said.He ended up witnessing a cliff and water rescue."Two young girls ... They looked to be about 12 or 13," Grant said. "They were down at this point, and a large set came in and swept them off their feet.""The older one hit her head probably down on the reef and had a pretty serious head injury in the water," Lt. Andy Lerum with the San Diego Lifeguards said.Before first responders could arrive on the scene, two boys jumped into the water to help the girls. The two teenage boys worked to keep the girls above water until help arrived, lifeguards said, adding that their efforts were instrumental in saving their lives."It was big surf," Grant remembered. "The girls could not swim or couldn't swim very well, that's for sure. And it just could've been a tragic event if those two guys didn't happen to be here."Grant captured dramatic photos of the rescue, showing responders hoist one of the girls from the cliffs. In the end, Grant did get his sunset shot, just with an amazing cliff rescue in the foreground.Lifeguards remind folks that even in exposed reef areas, strong waves could come crashing at any moment. So take extra precautions when going into the water this weekend. 1509

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego began welcoming some students back to campus housing, with a host of COVID-19 safety precautions.As with all things during this pandemic, move-in weekend at UCSD didn’t look quite the same."Kinda nervous, but excited," said freshman Alexis Estrada.Along with the normal nervous excitement, there was the new normal. Each student given a mask and hand sanitizer, along with a coronavirus test - results within 48 hours.The move-in for some 7,500 students - staggered throughout a 10-day span.Residential adviser Summer Thai says the actual moving in is taking longer."Definitely different. More difficult to get more stuff into the room ... in elevators, we practice social distancing. One family unit at a time," said Thai.While a vast majority of classes will be remote learning, any student going to a UCSD location will have to a complete a daily health self-screening. Students living and going to class on campus will be tested twice a month.Freshman Nicole Rodriguez says while the pandemic life is challenging."I can’t really hang out with suitemates. It's kind of isolating ... But these precautions are the right thing to do," said Rodriguez.UCSD officials are hoping to avoid the outbreak situation unfolding at San Diego State University, with more than 700 positive cases. UCSD is going high tech to ease those worries. Ongoing wastewater testing is serving as a warning system. Also, a voluntary pilot program will utilize smartphone technology to notify students if they may have been exposed.Classes begin September 28. Nearly 90% of classes will be online. 1612

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- A San Diego mother says working from home during the coronavirus pandemic cost her her job. She claims she was fired because her kids were making noises in the background of her teleconference calls."We're letting you go," Drisana Rios said. That was what her Human Resources representative told her in a call earlier this month. She said she thought the call was supposed to help resolve her workplace problems. Instead, by the end of the call, she says she was fired.Rios says it all began in mid-March when her bosses at an out-of-state insurance firm told her to work from home and telecommute via conference calls. This was in response to the state's COVID-19 lockdown orders.Rios says all parents working from home received an email from the company's regional boss that read, "thank you for the incredible effort you are putting forth through these difficult times." She says it also said that they would avoid layoffs during the pandemic.Like many parents, Rios was unable to find childcare for her four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son. Despite juggling parenting and working from home, Rios claims she was able to complete all her tasks. She adds that her clients never complained about her kids being in the background of her conference calls. The only complaints, she says, came from her male, direct superior."I said, 'Do you want me to lock my kids in the room? My one-year-old in the room? Do you want me to do that?' And… he responded and said, 'Figure it out.'" Rios said.She says she tried to arrange calls to be during her children's afternoon naptimes but claims her boss continued to ignore and demean her."He would purposely overlap schedules," Rios said.Rios then reached out to her HR department and asked how she should deal with the harassment she says she was experiencing-- a move she says that backfired a week later."She was shamed for having children, so she first elevated it to Human Resources," Daphne Delvaux, Sr. trial attorney at Gruenberg Law, said. "Human Resources took the side of the abusive manager, and terminated her for complaining."Rios has since filed a lawsuit against both her direct boss and the company for Gender discrimination, Retaliation, Gender harassment, Failure to prevent gender discrimination, Negligent supervision, Intentional infliction of emotional distress, and Wrongful termination in violation of public policy.In her complaint, Rios claims her HR representative told her that the company was "...experiencing a reduced revenue due to COVID-19 and they were laying [the] plaintiff off as a result of the pandemic." But Rios believes this was retaliation."The fact that they tried to cover it up because I went to HR, it's obvious what they did," Rios said.ABC 10News reached out to the company headquarters for comment on this lawsuit. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Veterans looking for a job during the Coronavirus Pandemic are learning to use virtual job fairs to grow their careers."It's sometimes difficult, but overall it's been a positive experience," says Army Veteran Steven Padilla, who has been looking for a job since March."You can only do so much interacting. You can't shake hands. You can't wait in line for a conversation."Padilla says his job search has been more difficult since the Pandemic hit. Companies have stopped hiring or removed job postings.He's not alone in looking for a job. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Veteran Unemployment skyrocketed during the Pandemic, peaking at 11.8% in April. That means more people competing for fewer positions.But RecruitMilitary.com, the Army's primary contractor for helping service members transition from the Army to civilian employment, says there are still plenty of jobs. They're hosting multiple virtual job fairs every week to help veterans find one."It's really just a way to dip your toes in the water and visiting a lot of companies," says Chris Stevens, the Vice President of RecruitMilitary.com.He says the company has gone from holding about 15 virtual job fairs each year to more than 130 planned for 2020."It's just like any other typical chat room," Stevens says. "Candidates and companies can go into private chats. They can do audio or video broadcasts and reach a larger audience."RecruitMilitary has a virtual job fair planned for the Southern California area on Thursday, June 18, from 11 am - 3 pm.Registration is free and open to all military veterans and their spouses.Click here to register. 1654
