James Nestor is the author of the book "Breath: the New Science of a Lost Art." He's written for many publications including The New York Times, National Public Radio, and Scientific American. For the past decade, he’s been traveling the world talking with top breathing experts to gather research for his latest book.“The book "Breath" is looking at how humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly and why we’re suffering from so many chronic problems because of it," Nestor said. "And it’s really based on finding ways to acknowledge these problems and how to fix them.”Chronic problems like asthma, snoring, sleep apnea and COPD.“Breathing can often be exacerbating these problems, or in some cases causing these problems," Nestor said. "So until you start breathing properly, you’re going to constantly have health issues.”Not just physical health issues, but mental health issues too. Kevin McQueen is the Director of Respiratory Care at UCHealth in Colorado. He says a lack of oxygen causes stress on the heart, but the most noticeable impact of poor breathing is anxiety.“People don’t always pay attention to how important breathing is, and how when you’re not breathing properly, how stressful it is,” McQueen said.Considering we’re in the final weeks of the election and in the middle of a pandemic, it’s likely a lot of us are feeling more stressed out. However, practicing deep and controlled breathing is scientifically proven to help us feel better.“One thing that you can do, is breathe through your nose," Nestor said. "Breathe through your nose all the time.”In addition to breathing through your nose, James suggests breathing slowly, deeply and more lightly. He says that breathing allows us to hack into our nervous system and it relaxes us. McQueen says he tells his patients to focus on ‘square breathing’.“I kind of try to teach them to think of a square breath," McQueen said. "So they take a breath in, they hold it for a moment, and then they relax and let it go. And by doing that, you can’t breathe really fast.”McQueen says fast breathing in our chest can lead to more anxiety and an eventual panic attack with hyperventilation. If you ever find yourself getting to that point, Nestor says you can start counting while you breathe.“If ever you feel yourself becoming anxious or stressed out, or your thoughts are scattered, take in a breath to about four, exhale to about six to calm yourself,” Nestor said.Nestor says the impact of breathing goes beyond anxiety and his research suggests we should be breathing deeply all the time. He says being aware of our breathing is the first step we can take to a healthier lifestyle.“You can exercise all you want, you can eat the best possible foods," Nestor said. "If you are not breathing correctly, you are never going to be healthy.” 2822

  

JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) - A Jamul mother is worried the remote learning designed to keep her daughter safe during the pandemic, is making her sick.When 11-year-old Amelia started the school year with distance learning in mid-August, her daily computer screen time went from one to two hours, to seven to eight hours. Her mother Renee says Amelia's school has since offered a hybird option. Now Amerila does remote learning three days a week. Around the beginning of October, Renee says her daughter started complaining about her eyes."She started to come to me with, 'My eyes are tired. I want to scratch my eyes,'" said Renee.Within the past week, those symptoms have gotten worse."She started saying she was lightheaded, uncomfortable in front of the screen. Started feeling constant headaches," said Renee.Renee shared details on a neighborhood Facebook page and learned her daughter wasn't alone."Found out a lot of community members are facing the same challenges with their children," said Renee.Locally and across the county, as school districts have turned to remote learning and all that uninterrupted screen time, complaints of visual fatigue have continued to grow."It's frustrating. I feel helpless. I also want her to be healthy and stay focused. I also don't her to fall behind. She loves school," said Renee.Amelia's pediatrician prescribed ibuprofen, which hasn't helped. A few days ago, Renee purchased blue-light blocking glasses for her daughter. Renee says the eye fatigue has gotten better but the headaches remain.Dr. David Granet, Professor of Ophthalmology & Pediatrics, UC San Diego School of Medicine, offered this advice when it comes to remote learning:"Health problems connected with spending many hours at a time or in a day looking at a computer monitor or TV screen is a global issue, especially where schools are currently shut down and students are spending class hours online. There are immediate and longer-term effects.First, there is the issue of eyestrain. Looking at something up close, like a monitor, requires effort. The muscles of the eyes have to work hard to focus. Younger people may have a greater ability to do that, but it still takes effort, which can lead to headaches, blurry vision when the muscles tire, or dry and itchy eyes because you’re not blinking enough.Then there is the issue of how you’re looking at the screen. Are you hunched over a laptop? Hanging your head out and forward puts a great strain on the neck and back. It creates posture issues.A simple part of the remedy involves the 20-20-20 rule: After 20 minutes of looking at a screen, look at something at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. That gives your eyes time to relax and recover. This is one of the times when we want kids to gaze outside the window! There are many ways to remember to do this, such as setting a timer or bookmarking ahead in an e-book.Kids need to get up and away from screens to help prevent longer-term issues. For example, there is a growing epidemic of myopia, near-sightedness caused by too many years spent staring at close objects, like computer screens. It’s happening around the world.Excessive screen time is also linked to rising rates of childhood obesity, impaired sleep quality, and behavioral changes. It’s critical that students spend considerable time away from screens, outside, being physically active." 3389

  

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Emergency crews met a Frontier Airlines plane on the runway Tuesday afternoon at KCI after the plane’s pilots reported landing gear problems.The pilots of Frontier Airlines Flight 821 from Philadelphia to Kansas City were on approach to KCI around 5:15 p.m. when they radioed into air traffic controllers about a landing gear problem. The plane did a flyby of the airport before circling back and making another try.Just before 6 p.m., the plane landed without incident at KCI.Emergency crews quickly evaluated the plane on the runway before the plane proceeded to the terminal.The plane was an Airbus A321. 639
