CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Warmer ocean temperatures are being blamed after 10 to 15 people were stung by stingrays along the beach in Coronado Tuesday afternoon. According to lifeguards, 10 to 15 people were stung by the creatures after 4 p.m. Lifeguards say ocean temperatures, which reached the mid 60s Tuesday, were to blame for the increase in stingray activity. Lifeguards added that, when ocean waters warm up, it’s common to see an increase in stingray activity, but it’s unusual to see so many stings in a single day. Crews placed purple flags along the shores of Coronado Tuesday to warn of the increase, but say tourists may not know about the dangers the rays pose. The flags can also be used to warn about other creatures, such as jellyfish in the water. The California round ray is known to feed in the shallows off the California coast. Officials say the stingrays lay partially buried in the sand while hunting, making them difficult to spot for unsuspecting beachgoers. The stingray’s barb is covered in venom and mucus that causes severe pain if it breaks the skin. To avoid stepping on the rays, lifeguards recommend shuffling your feet. COVID-19 has boosted a number of essential and online businesses to the point where they need to hire hundreds of people. Now, some of these companies are getting creative with hiring during the pandemic."This is about actionality and giving everyone whatever ways that are necessary to them to be able to find work. Our teams have been trying to come up with creative ways to connect people and work," said Carl Schweihs, the president of PeopleManagement at TrueBlue, a national staffing company that helps businesses, big and small.Schweihs says their team decided to try out a drive-thru hiring event. TrueBlue is running the events through its Staff Management |SMX business."We did one of these in April in Pennsylvania, and we saw a lot of success, so we were able to hire about as many people in one day as we had done in a week in the past," said Schweihs.The company saw so much success that True Blue decided to offer the drive-thru service to other clients, as well."We saw a lot of people were interested in it. They weren’t used to necessarily video interviewing and there was a comfort factor in still being close to someone, still being able to ask questions, that just weren’t there on the video side," explained Schweihs.How it works is applicants fill out all of their information ahead of time online. Then, True Blue schedules certain times for people to drive up and interview through their car window. Schweihs says they're able to interview more candidates in less time."Another thing is, we do interviews on all of our jobs and I think it also shows, especially in warehousing and distribution jobs attendance is a big issue, so by people being able to show up to an interview at a scheduled time, it also gives comfort in us and our customers that they're going to show up and be in attendance when they actually do take the job," said Schweihs.Drive-thru hiring is gaining ground across the country. In California, the Tulare County Employment Connection is hosting its first drive-thru event to fill 40 electrical and solar installation positions."I'm a little bit old fashioned. I like the face-to-face, and I know a lot of people do. Just the safety matter of it right now during the pandemic, following safety guidelines, I think it's a very good idea to be able to drive through and make it quick, where there's not very much contact, but at the same time, you're having that face to face with employers," said Monica Andrade, a business resource specialist with Tulare County Employment Connection.Andrade says employers will also have an opportunity to have a more in-depth interview with some candidates by having the candidate pull over and conduct a socially distant interview outside in a separate area. This week, Maryland's state universities are some of the latest to say they will test students if they can't prove they had a negative test within 14 days of arriving on-campusResearchers from Yale, Harvard and Massachusetts General Hospital have a model of what they say needs to happen for campuses to reopen.It includes testing students every two days along with strict social distancing measures“There are still schools out there who think they can get by with symptom-based monitoring,” said David Paltiel of Yale Public Health. “That is waiting until a student develops symptoms before springing into action. We have run simulations and scenarios over and over again. We have yet to find a single one where that is good enough.”Experts believe screening frequency is more important than test accuracy. But they say daily testing could lead to false positives. They think testing every two days will cost 0 per student per semester.“Any school that cannot see how it's going to reasonably implement a program of frequent screening alongside a program of social distancing really has to ask itself if it has any business reopening,” Paltiel said.Vassar College President Elizabeth Bradley looked at how the model would work for them. She wrote in the journal JAMA they would have a controllable number of infections, even if they only tested students every four weeks.They would also use social distancing, masks, and contact tracing. COVINGTON, Ky. — Holy Cross High School's graduating valedictorian and student council president learned hours before Friday night's graduation that they would not be allowed to deliver their planned — and, they thought, pre-approved — speeches at the ceremony.They found a pair of megaphones and delivered them outside. "We must take what we've learned in this community and apply it to the world we are about to encounter."Bales' mother, Gillian Marksberry, said Bales and student council president Katherine Frantz had believed their speeches were approved before an "out-of-the-blue" Friday morning call from Principal Mike Holtz to both their families. Holtz held an "emergency meeting" that ended in a declaration the diocese did not feel the two speeches were appropriate for the ceremony, Marksberry said.Holtz related to her that the diocese characterized them as "aggressive, angry, confrontational" and too personal for the graduation stage. Marksberry said the general staff of Holy Cross High School had been supportive of her son and found ways to "help him embrace himself," and she did not bear the district any ill will. "We don't want to be vindictive, we don't want to be vengeful," she said. "That's not what this is about. He's earned the right to have a voice."Bishop Roger Foys, who oversees the Diocese of Covington and who typically distributes awards at Catholic schools' graduations, did not attend the ceremony. CVS hears the Amazon footsteps -- and the pharmacy giant is wasting no time trying to get ahead of any Jeff Bezos plan to disrupt the drug store business the way that he has the rest of retail.CVS said Monday that it plans to offer next day delivery of prescription drugs nationwide in 2018. In some urban markets, CVS will even deliver on the same day.A program to deliver both medications and a select offering of other CVS products from the front of the store will begin in Manhattan on December 4.CVS CEO Larry Merlo made the announcements during the company's earnings conference call with analysts.The news comes just a few weeks after reports surfaced that Amazon had received wholesale pharmacy licenses in a dozen states.That move would potentially allow Amazon to sell prescription medications online.The speculation caused the shares of CVS and rival Walgreens to fall, as did pharmacy benefits manager company Express Scripts, a competitor of the CVS-owned PBM Caremark.The stocks of drug distributors Cardinal Health, AmerisourceBergen and McKesson all fell too.This is because investors are worried that Amazon, which is already changing the dynamics of the grocery business thanks to its acquisition of Whole Foods, may look to do the same for drug stores.But Merlo said during the call with analysts Monday that he still sees Amazon as more of a potential ally than threat."You would never close the door on any type of partnership," Merlo said, when asked by an analyst about possibly working with Amazon.Still, CVS seems to recognize that the health care landscape is changing rapidly, and it needs to adjust. There have even been recent rumors that CVS may look to buy health insurer Aetna.Aetna scrapped plans to merge with rival Humana earlier this year due to intense regulatory scrutiny.
