SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Leonardo Hurtado Ibarra is being remembered as a family man with a complex and troubled life.“He’d always keep a smile on his face regardless of whatever he was going through," Abril Huerta told ABC 10News.Ibarra, 25, was shot and killed after allegedly pointing a revolver at a San Diego Police Department officer in Downtown San Diego on Saturday night.According to police, officers recognized Ibarra from a wanted poster in connection with a robbery that happened last week. "He was the most loyal individual you could ever meet and he’d give you the shirt off his back if you were in need."“He only wanted to defend himself from any harm that were to come his way,” she said. The police department has not released the names of the officers involved in the shooting. As Ryland got older, the feelings got stronger.After consulting professionals and experts, parents Jeff and Hillary Whittington came to the conclusion Ryland was transgender. For their child’s well-being, they decided to allow him to transition as soon as possible.Today, the YouTube video about Ryland's journey has more than 8 million views.In a 2016 interview with 10News, Jeff Whittington explained some of the criticism his family received. “They think that this is something that just happened overnight. We just made this split-second decision and our son said, ‘I feel like a boy.’ And we said great. And that wasn’t the case,” he said.Hillary Whittington wrote a book about their journey, Raising Ryland."I think people are definitely opening their minds a lot more,” Hillary Whittington said, as she reflected on their family’s journey over the past several years.Jeff explained how they try to deal with those who do not agree with their family’s decision. “We recognize that a lot of that comes from background, stories, and experiences they’ve had. We tend to take that negativity and try and understand what the source of that may be and try and find empathy for those that are critical,” he said.Ryland, now 12-years-old, said he is comfortable with his story being so public. “I know it helps a lot of people,” he said.Last year, his family hosted a “coming out party” to share with loved ones. In 2018, Kazakhstan native Satbay Kydyrali, 31, made his way to a local border crossing "He crossed border, turned himself in and asked for asylum," said Almas Irgebayev, Kydyrali's brother.Irgebayev says the asylum claim was denied and is now under appeal, a decision that could be years away. Meanwhile his brother continues to being held at Otay Mesa Detention Center. "Last three days, I was just crying when I think about him," said Irgebayev.Irgebayev says his brother is coughing, and in a cell with 7 other men. They are less than two feet apart, and most of the other men are also coughing. His brother told him none of the staff is wearing masks, and the detainees clean their own cell twice a day. The two brothers talk on the phone every day."He says that he wants to get out. I was crying on the phone. I heard him crying as well," said Irgebayev.Irgebayev is fearful because his brother is at-risk. He contracted tuberculosis as a child and has developed chronic breathing issues."I'm in a panic. I am feeling very bad, because I'm helpless," said Irgebayev. Similar sentiments were on display at a socially distant, vehicle protest near the federal courthouse downtown. Immigrant advocates were asking for at-risk detainees to be released. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It was a chilly dilemma for a Pacific Beach restaurant: outdoor dining this winter without any patio heaters.The owners changed their outlook by appealing to their customers for help.After shutting down several times since the pandemic began, Break Point restaurant and bar, reopened in September. With the purple tier restrictions putting a halt to indoor dining, the owners turned to their new parklet to host their outdoor dining. But they had a problem."Keeping customers warm is a concern," said co-owner Amy Lee.Lee says when the winter temps arrive, they would need gas patio heaters to warm up customers, and they didn't have any."We found that they were pretty much sold out everywhere, and where they weren't sold out, prices were inflated to the point, that they were unaffordable," said Lee.One local supplier recently told ABC 10News they had a backlog of 200 orders.So Lee turned to social media, making an appeal for patio heaters on the Nextdoor app and community pages on Facebook.One of those appeals was seen by the Rynearson family. They had a backyard heater they hadn't used in awhile. Chance Rynearson, 14, says it was an easy call to lend the heater to Lee for as long as she needs it."COVID has really hit businesses hard. Just to help out is a good thing ... People should be helping each other during these times ... difficult but we should be able to get through it together," said Rynearson.In all, 17 people offered to either donate or lend a heater to Break Point, far more than Lee needed."It's like Christmas. It makes you wanna believe in Santa again ... It was that heartwarming," said Lee.Heartwarming and customer warming. Lee says this gives them a chance at survival this winter."I think it shows we should still have a lot of faith in our neighbors, in our community, and in humanity in general ... and that there's still a lot of good people out there.
