It could take up to two years for the government to identify potentially thousands of additional immigrant families US authorities separated at the southern border, officials said in a court filing.The government's proposed plan, detailed for the first time in documents filed late Friday night, outlines a strategy for piecing together exactly who might have been separated by combing through thousands of records using a mix of data analysis and manual review.The court filing comes a year after a memo from then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions officially created the administration's "zero tolerance" policy, which eventually led to the separation of thousands of immigrant families. While a federal court order forced the reunification of many of those families, an explosive government watchdog report in January revealed there could be thousands more who hadn't previously been acknowledged by officials.And a federal judge last month ruled that this group should be included in the class-action lawsuit over family separations.The judge's order was a major blow for the Trump administration, which had argued finding these families would be too burdensome a task. And it now presents a major logistical challenge for the government.Several factors complicate the process, officials said in Friday's court filing:? US Customs and Border Protection didn't start tracking separated families as a searchable data set in its records before April 19, 2018? A manual review alone would "overwhelm ORR's existing resources" because teams would have to comb through nearly 50,000 case files Instead of taking that approach, officials propose using data analysis to hone in on which records are likely to be separated children, and then to embark on more painstaking manual reviews. The process, officials said, would take "at least 12 months, and possibly up to 24 months."A team of officials representing the Department of Health and Human Services, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Customs and Border Protection would lead the effort, the filing said. They would then convene a data analysis team led by a senior biostatistician.Last month, US District Judge Dana Sabraw issued a 14-page ruling modifying the class definition, following revelations that the government had been separating families as far back as July 1, 2017, months before the controversial "zero tolerance" immigration policy was announced. Officials estimated that the children were separated, received by HHS for care and released prior to Sabraw's June 26, 2018, court order ordering a halt to most family separations at the US border.Plaintiffs "request that the government identify the families whom it separated on or after July 1, 2017 whose children were released from ORR before June 26, 2018," according to a court document late last month. They note that the government should "start the process immediately." The government had proposed submitting a proposal on next steps "on or before April 5, 2019."The Ms. L, et al. vs. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, et al., case was initially prompted by the separation of a Congolese woman and her 7-year-old daughter. The American Civil Liberties Union originally filed the case last year and it was later expanded to become a class action lawsuit.Last June, Sabraw issued a preliminary injunction blocking most family separations at the US-Mexico border and ordered the government to reunite the families it had divided.Since then, the administration has provided regular reports to the court on the reunification status of children and parents whom the government separated, including some parents who were deported but ultimately elected not to be reunified with their children.As of March 25, 2019, the government has discharged 2,749 of 2,814 possible children of potential class members, up eight since the last status report on March 6. 4028

One person Givling has helped is Indiana University graduate Erin Smith, who says one big win on the app enabled her to put a down payment on a home for her and her little girl. "I first heard about Givling on the news, when one of the first loan payoffs was a guy in Indy a couple of years ago," Smith said. That Hoosier winner she is referring to is Jordan Shelton. He won ,407 in July 2017 to pay off his student loans. Shelton was just the second person to have his loans paid off by the crowdfunding app, which has now funded more than 35 loans and paid out thousands of dollars in trivia and random prizes."I downloaded it and began playing, participating at that time," Smith said. "My main goal was to get into the funding spot someday. I have a decent amount of student loan debt, that seems a bit overwhelming."And that's still a goal for Smith, but while she works her way up the queue toward the winner's circle, playing Givling proved to be more than just a chance at student loan relief — it helped her start her new life with her 3-year-old daughter. "I never thought of winning via trivia because I wasn't very good," Smith said. "I watched as Givling was growing, gaining more momentum, then started telling everyone who would listen about it. Most people wrote me off or called it a scam, but I got a few people to sign up. In October of last year, I was at work telling people about Givling and playing my free plays on my break. Late last Saturday night, Ethan Crispo had just left a friend's birthday party in Birmingham, Alabama, and walked into a Waffle House around midnight to grab a bite.Crispo told CNN only a single employee was working in the restaurant.He described the cook's face, as "awash in bewilderment," at finding he was by himself managing the night shift.More than 30 people were there eating, and there was just one man left to "fend off the incoming crowd of hungry, heavily imbibed customers," Crispo said.He became resigned to going home on an empty stomach.But a customer finished his meal, asked for an apron and stepped behind the counter to wash dishes."It was a smooth transition," Crispo, 24, said. "He just busted his butt and helped out."'It was one of my most memorable experiences'Crispo said he asked Ben, the lone associate working, who the man washing dishes was.Turns out he didn't work at the restaurant, nor did he work at a Waffle House anywhere.Another woman, wearing a dress and heels, also stepped up. The team partnered with CLEAR to give fans the opportunity to get priority into the ballpark. Signing up for CLEAR at a stadium is free, but you can only use your membership at that stadium. But if you sign up for the 9/year membership at an airport, it will give you a priority at both locations. “You use your fingerprints, just like you would at the airport. You get into the ballpark,” says Ed O’Brien, head of sports at CLEAR, of the process. “We will then check your ticket. Then, you will go through the screening process, whether with a metal detector or with a wand.” More than a dozen stadiums across the country are using CLEAR. O'Brien says Clear is planning to expand the number of stadiums and how the technology is used.
