The Transportation Security Administration released tips on Thursday to help travelers traverse through security and make it to their destination on time during the busy Thanksgiving holiday. The TSA said it expects to screen 26.8 million air passengers and crew members from Nov. 22 through Dec. 2, a 4 percent increase over 2018. Here are 10 tips the TSA wants travelers to know:Get to the airport early—two hours prior to a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight. Only a turkey gets to the airport in the last minute during the Thanksgiving travel period. Don’t be a turkey!Know which foods can travel in your carry-on bag. Pies, cakes, stuffing mix, casseroles, are all good in a carry-on bag because they are solid food items.Know which foods should go into a checked bag. Gravy, cranberry sauce, wine, jam, preserves, should all go into a checked bag. Why? They are not solids. Basically if you can spill it, spray it, spread it, pump it or pour it, (say that three times fast) then it’s not a solid and should be packed in a checked bag.Wear slip-on shoes. Shoe laces and zip-up boots take extra time to remove and put back on. Wearing slip-ons just saves you time. But admittedly, it’s fun to watch someone else hop around on one foot as they try to remove a boot.Place your electronic carving knife (or your non-electric knife) in your checked bag. Should be a no-brainer, wouldn’t you think?Pack smart. Don’t bring along any prohibited items. If you are not sure if an item should go in a carry-on bag, checked bag, either or neither, don’t be shy, just tweet your question to @AskTSA or ask via Facebook Messenger.Download the free MyTSA app. The best thing about it is the “Can I bring” feature. Type in an item and it lets you know immediately if you should pack it in a checked or carry-on bag. It also can let you know if there is an airport delay and whether TSA Precheck lanes are available. Super helpful. And if you get bored during the holiday, you can use it to play a game with your relatives by asking them to guess if an item should be packed in a checked or carry-on bag and using the app to provide the correct answer.Use your time in the checkpoint line wisely. It’s the perfect time to take items out of your pockets and place them in your carry-on bag and to get your ID and boarding pass ready to hand to the TSA officer.Enroll in TSA Precheck--if not before Thanksgiving, then before your next trip. It allows you to leave on your shoes, lightweight jacket and belt when you go through the checkpoint. Plus, you can leave your electronics and your one-quart-size liquids bag in your carry-on bag instead of removing it at the checkpoint. It’s like driving in the fast lane.Pay attention to the guidance that the TSA officers are providing at the checkpoint. They may be directing you to a shorter line or guiding you around someone who is moving slowly. And they may be giving you some advice that will lessen the likelihood that you’ll need a pat-down.Justin Boggs is a writer for the E.W. Scripps National Desk. 3081

This time of year is filled with shopping and holiday cheer. But along with the sweets and the sweaters, comes a third "S" — stress.“I definitely get stressed when I’m shopping, just to make sure everyone will like the gift I give them,” one woman said while shopping at a local market in Denver."I think family stresses families out,” Christina Critchell said.Holiday stress is a real problem for a lot of people.“I decided just this week that part of it is trying to juggle everybody’s different expectations,” Sarah Twiss said.A survey from Healthline found around 62% of people experience some level of stress during the holidays. Only 10% said they’re not stressed at all.“Everybody’s looking for a perfect Christmas,” said Dr. Ira Dauber, a physician at South Denver Cardiology. “It’s very stressful, nobody wants to ruin anybody else’s good time.”That stress can take a toll. “There’s a peak of heart attacks Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Day,” Dauber said. He helps patients with a variety of heart issues.“There’s more than one medical study that says there is such a thing as a 'holiday heart attack,' ” Dauber said.’’ In one study by the American Heart Association, researchers found a 4.2% increase in heart-related deaths between December 25 and January 7."Another study by the British Medical Journal found the highest risk for heart attack is on Christmas Eve.“What causes the spike in holiday heart attacks is really a hard thing to know,” Dauber said. “A lot of the theory is it's a stressful time of year.”The theories on why this happens changes depending on the doctor you talk to.“The short answer is yes, stress can be a factor in heart attacks,” said Dr. David Avner, an emergency medicine physician at UCHealth Broomfield Hospital. He said a lot of other factors also contribute to this spike, like traveling more around the holidays, forgetting medications — like blood pressure pills — at home, or simply not speaking up when you don’t feel well.“You might not want to interrupt the festivities and say, you know, I’m having some chest discomfort,” Avner said. “You don’t want to be shy about letting family and friends know.”There are ways to lower your risk, too. He said monitoring your diet, avoiding fatty foods and making sure you’re taking your medications regularly will help.“You need to be aware of what your body normally can do and any changes to that,” he said. “Heart attacks announce themselves very differently in different people.”There are also ways to keep your stress at bay.“It’s going to be different for different people, so if you go to a spa and that helps you feel relaxed, that’s gonna help," Avner said. "If things are feeling stressed at home and you go for a walk, or you like to go to the gym and that’s your outlet for stress release, those would probably be equally as effective." 2860

The US military has flown an increased number of reconnaissance flights in international airspace off the coast of Venezuela during the last several days to gather classified intelligence about the embattled government of President Nicholas Maduro, according to two US defense officials. The officials would not detail which US military aircraft are being used, but the Navy and Air Force maintain several large fixed-wing aircraft capable of intercepting communications and monitoring the status of weaponry. The officials noted that the effort is limited to whatever the aircraft can gather by staying in international airspace.Several US military officials continue to emphasize there are no military options actively being considered for the Venezuela crisis. For now, the US military would only contemplate a response if US assets, personnel or the embassy were attacked.Venezuela is in crisis as self-proclaimed interim president Juan Guaido battles Maduro for control.Guaido has called for other nations to send aid to the country in response to worsening food and medicine shortages. Maduro denies a humanitarian crisis exists in Venezuela and says the aid efforts are part of a coup attempt.Over the weekend, violence broke out when the Venezuelan military blocked aid convoys at the country's border. In the state of Tachira, along the border with Colombia, more than 300 people were hurt in clashes that involved firearms and Molotov cocktails, said the Venezuelan government's special envoy for Tachira state, Freddy Bernal. He said the attacks were conducted by irregular groups protesting Maduro's government on the international bridges along the border between Venezuela and Colombia -- the Simon Bolivar bridge in San Antonio and the Francisco de Paula Santander bridge in Ure?a."We registered no deaths despite the violent attacks for more than 15 hours of battle" by groups on the international bridges fighting "against thousands of patriots who fought and defended themselves," he said. CNN has not independently verified the numbers of the injured in these clashes. The opposition group said five people were killed. CNN has not verified those numbers. In other developments:? Trucker David Bell was hauling nearly 45,000 pounds of soda in his tractor-trailer through Jefferson City, Missouri, when his smart phone sprang to life with a severe weather alert. He pulled over to the side of the road, as a tornado spread mass chaos outside. The windscreen of the truck's cab shattered. The howling winds blew part of a house underneath his trailer and trees snapped as lightning flashed around him.Agape at nature's fury around him, he wondered that Thursday night whether he'd see his family again."It definitely gave me a new outlook on life," 578
