SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An El Cajon woman watched in disbelief Sunday night as her Amazon package was stolen by the very people who delivered it. Cheryl Cook broke her ankle over the weekend and ordered a large ice pack off Amazon. She chose same-day delivery so that she could start icing her ankle as soon as possible.Cook was able to track the driver’s location and could see when he had arrived at her home. She says the delivery started off strangely when the driver put the package on the front lawn rather than the porch. He then got back in the car, put his flashers on, and drove a few feet up the street. Moments later, a second person got out of the car and stole the package. “I’m injured, I’m home, I can’t get out my own front door, and then my package is stolen by the guy who dropped it off,” said Cook. She shared the video online and heard similar stories. “I wanted people to know what was going on, there might be other people that have lost packages and wondered where they went, and this was very clear-cut; it went right back in the guy’s car.”In a statement to 10News, Amazon said:“This does not reflect the high standards we have for delivery partners. This individual is no longer delivering Amazon packages, and we have reached out to the customer to make things right.”A spokesperson went on to tell 10News that their Amazon Flex delivery partners are thoroughly vetted through a comprehensive, multi-state criminal background check and a review of their motor vehicle records. They say the person who stole Cook’s package passed their background check and delivered Amazon packages for less than a month. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Albertsons Companies confirmed Saturday an employee of an Escondido grocery store tested positive for COVID-19.The company said the store will remain open, and "will continue to follow an enhanced cleaning and disinfection process in every department."Public Affairs Director Melissa Hill said that the employee is receiving care and has not worked at the store since March 24. Hill said the Escondido store has been through multiple sanitizing and disinfecting cycles, and used third-party expert service.Hill said the store is monitoring other staff for symptoms."Following CDC guidelines, our Crisis Response Team may recommend that additional members of the store team self-quarantine. These employees will be eligible to receive up to 14 days of quarantine pay," said Hill.The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 135 President Todd Walters said they have been working with companies to get higher safety measures into the workplaces of members.He said three members of the union tested positive as of Saturday. He said they were all at different locations in San Diego County."We're encouraging and asking the members to 1. Make sure they get their social distance. 2. We want them to get time every 30 minutes to stop, wash their hands and clean their work stations," he said.Walters said Plexiglas has been installed at check out stands to protect workers at Albertsons and Vons, and next week Ralphs and Food For Less will see the same installation.He said employees are tired from the long shifts and urged the public to realize supplies aren't going anywhere. "Please don't shop unless you have to, there's no need to horde. If you see these retail workers, not just grocery, but our drug store members, or other retail entities, give them space. If they're trying to work and you need something, call out to them. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A scary looking fish with dagger-like teeth was discovered Wednesday on the shores of Dog Beach in Ocean Beach. The four-foot-long fish isn't something people usually find while fishing off a local pier or even walking along the coast. And before imaginations run wild, it isn't a monster — well, not quite.The fish is a lancetfish, which typically call the dark depths of the ocean home. There, the fish feed on jellyfish, micro plastic, tiny deepwater organisms, and even smaller lancetfish, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).RELATED: Rattlesnake season officially begins in Southern California(There's the monster aspect.)With sharp fangs and prehistoric spikes, the fish appears to look like an ancient creature from the time of dinosaurs.That may or may not be the case. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – An atmospheric river is set to bring widespread showers -- which could lead to flooding -- to San Diego County the next week.Rain is expected to come down Monday afternoon and finally taper off Thursday, with the most widespread and heavy rainfall coming Tuesday.Initial forecasts show rain totaling 1 to 3 inches for most areas of San Diego, with up to 5 inches of snow in some mountain locations, according to 10News weather anchor Vanessa Paz.WEATHER: 10News' updated forecast for San Diego CountyAccording to the National Weather Service, localized flooding will be possible Tuesday and typically dry desert areas will see significant flow. Thunderstorms will also be possible in some areas.Heavy showers are expected to continue Wednesday morning, with more roadway and local flooding possible, NWS reported.Thursday, if showers continue, flooding could continue to be an issue. Though, currently showers are expected to ease. Showers are expected to move out of the county by Friday.The showers are expected to help San Diego's reservoirs for the rest of the year. Currently, much of California is either "abnormally dry" or in a "moderate drought." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After releasing a new study showing the link between free, unstructured play and increased brain development, doctors may now start prescribing playtime for young children.The study, titled "The Power of Play" by the American Academy of Pediatrics, says free, unstructured play, "is brain building, a central part of healthy child development, a key to executive function skills, and a buffer against the negative impacts of stress. Furthermore, play builds the bond between parent and child."The study blames an increase in strict scheduling, more screen time and parents' safety concerns as reasons why play time has dropped by as much as 25% over the last 30 years.The AAP is now advising its member-pediatricians to prescribe playtime to kids when they come in for wellness exams and check-ups."The benefits of play cannot really be overstated in terms of mitigating stress, improving academic skills and helping to build the safe, stable and nurturing relationships that buffer against toxic stress and build social-emotional resilience," says Michael Yogman, MD, FAAP, lead author of the AAP report.Local child development experts in San Diego agree, saying free play gives kids life-long skills."That's exactly what children need, especially in pre-school," says Andrea Wilson, the Manager at Rady Children's Hospital's Alexa's Playful Learning Academy for Young Children."That's the opportunity for them to turn-take, build empathy, use their communication skills, learn to be team players."Wilson's school emphasizes unstructured play in its classes. She says parents need to take part at home too, by giving kids choices when they play and letting them lead the way."Tell them, 'You can play with this toy, you can play with that toy,' and see what they want to do from there," says Wilson. "Also ask a lot of open-ended questions and learn with them as well."According to the study, screen-time is one of the biggest reasons kids aren't free-playing anymore. Wilson says it's easy to give kids an alternative, even when they're away from home."Having a bag of books, crayons and manipulative toys is always a better option than putting a screen in front of them," she says.As for how much free play kids need, the study doesn't give a specific set limit. Instead, it says that even as little as 15 minutes of free play showed positive results in kids' stress levels when compared to 15 minutes of being read to.The report also says that parents and doctors need to push schools towards scheduling more recess time, so kids have the chance to explore on their own. 2616
