WINDHOEK, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo on Saturday met with Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba on advancing the bilateral cooperation to further develop the partnership with Namibia.Wu, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, China's top legislative body, extended Chinese President Hu Jintao's greetings to Pohamba and hailed an "all- weather" partnership forged between the two nations.Namibia is one of the youngest states in Africa, which became fully independent in 1990.Wu reviewed the profound friendship between the two countries, which established diplomatic ties one day after Namibia's announcement of its full independence.Wu said the two countries have reaped good harvests in cooperation in the fields of politics, trade, culture, education, public health and culture in recent years, which has already set a model for countries engaged in the South-South cooperation.He also highlighted the mutual understanding and support on issues concerning each other's core interests, and to bring the bilateral economic and trade cooperation to a new high, Wu put forward a three-point proposal concerning the importation of the husbandry and aquatic products, resource and mining as well as the infrastructure construction.Namibia is a nation with significant influence in the southern Africa, Wu said, vowing that China will work with the Namibian side to push the bilateral partnership to a higher level.For his part, Pohamba welcomed Wu's visit, the first one ever paid by a Chinese top legislator, and spoke highly of China's long-standing support for Namibia's national liberation and construction.Namibia will develop the long-term and strategic cooperation in a much broader domain with China and welcomes more Chinese businesses to invest in the country, the Namibian president said.On the China-Afrcia relationship, the two leaders stressed that the two sides should work closer under the framework of the Forum of China-Africa Cooperation to boost political mutual trust, substantial and pragmatic cooperation on trade and humanitarian exchanges, especially those among the young generations, so as to further enrich a new China-Africa partnership.Namibia is the first leg of Wu's 12-day African-Asian tour. BEIJING, April 12 (Xinhuanet) -- Doctors may choose riskier treatment with fewer severe side effects for themselves than they'd recommend for their patients, according to a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine Tuesday. In the study, two sets of questions were sent to primary care physicians around the United States. One involved choosing between two types of colon cancer surgery and the other situation involved choosing no treatment for the flu, or choosing a made-up treatment less deadly than the disease but which could cause permanent paralysis. Of 242 physicians who answered the colon cancer questionnaire, 38 percent went with the treatment that carried a higher risk of death but fewer side effects for themselves. By contrast, only a quarter said they would recommend that treatment to their patients.In the flu scenario, 63 percent chose the deadlier option of no treatment for themselves, versus 49 percent recommending it for patients.The findings are important because patients faced with difficult medical decisions often ask their doctors, "What would you do?" The answer reflects the doctors' values -- not necessarily those of the patients.Doctors should know what their patients value most before giving advice, and patients should ask doctors the reasons behind their answers, said study author Dr. Peter Ubel, an internist and behavioral scientist at Duke University.

CANBERRA, April 1 (Xinhua) -- People who share bongs to smoke marijuana may be at risk of contracting pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) , Australian medical researchers warned on Friday.Dr Michael Hayes and Dr Susan Miles from Calvary Mater Hospital in Newcastle of Australia conducted the research, which centered on three recent TB cases in New South Wales.TB is caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which can be contracted by breathing in air droplets coughed from an infected person.The research suggested a link between active TB cases and shared bongs, which is the water pipes commonly used in marijuana smoking.According to Dr Hayes, the three young patients were regular or heavy cannabis users, and more recently there has been a fourth person in the region with similar characteristics had been diagnosed with TB.He said although the three initial cases were not related, there was concern about the high rate of positive contacts among people who had shared bongs with the active cases."Smoking marijuana is a cough-provoking activity and it is usually conducted in a confined environment that is conducive to the spread of the organism," he told Australia Associated Press.

LOS ANGELES, April 1 (Xinhua) -- A NASA Gulfstream-III aircraft equipped with a synthetic aperture radar is scheduled to depart Sunday, April 3 on a nine-day mission to image Hawaii volcanoes, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) announced on Friday.The aircraft will fly from the Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility in Palmdale, California to the Big Island of Hawaii to study the Kilauea volcano that recently erupted, said JPL in Pasadena, Los Angeles.The mission will help scientists better understand processes occurring under Earth's surface, JPL said.Developed by JPL, the Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar, or UAVSAR, uses a technique called interferometric synthetic aperture radar that sends pulses of microwave energy from the aircraft to the ground to detect and measure very subtle deformations in Earth's surface, such as those caused by earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides and glacier movements.As the Gulfstream-III flies at an altitude of about 12,500 meters, the radar, located in a pod under the aircraft's belly, will collect data over Kilauea, according to JPL.The UAVSAR's first data acquisitions over this volcanic region took place in January 2010, when the radar flew over the volcano daily for a week. The UAVSAR detected deflation of Kilauea's caldera over one day, part of a series of deflation-inflation events observed at Kilauea as magma is pumped into the volcano's east rift zone.This month's flights will repeat the 2010 flight paths to an accuracy of within 5 meters, or about 16.5 feet, assisted by a Platform Precision Autopilot designed by engineers at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center on Edwards Air Force Base, California, JPL said.By comparing these camera-like images, interferograms are formed that reveal changes in Earth's surface, said JPL.Between March 5 and 11, 2011, a spectacular fissure eruption occurred along the east rift zone. Satellite radar imagery captured the progression of this volcanic event."The April 2011 UAVSAR flights will capture the March 2011 fissure eruption surface displacements at high resolution and from multiple viewing directions, giving us an improved resolution of the magma injected into the east rift zone that caused the eruption," said JPL research scientist Paul Lundgren."Our goal is to be able to deploy the UAVSAR on short notice to better understand and aid in responding to hazards from Kilauea and other volcanoes in the Pacific region covered by this study," Lundgren added.
