She's been in business for five years, and says it gets harder each time the calendar turns. "Everybody thinks that because you're close to Petco Park, which is a great location, you're going to make a lot of money," she said. Ahmed says she tried keeping her cafe open during Padre games, but even then the foot traffic couldn't justify it.The East Village Association, which keeps a directory businesses, said in a statement that this part of the evolution of the neighborhood."As the East Village community continues to grow, so to does the sophistication of our businesses housing and residents, which lends to a competitive higher end urban environment, offering a uniquely downtown San Diego experience," the association said. A spokeswoman for the Tilted Kilt, which also closed its Mission Valley location earlier this year, said the owner of the space near Petco Park wanted to go in a different direction.   1502

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This Veterans Day, an online service is offering a deal to help veterans preserve their memories for future generations.Story Terrace is giving vets a discount so that they can write books based on their lives and experiences. The company is calling it the "Speak and Listen" campaign."My grandfather was in the resistance in the Netherlands (in WWII), and I regret not recording his stories," says Story Terrace CEO Rutger Bruining. "That's why I think it's really important for the entire family that these stories are kept and retold, so people remember what happens."The service pairs people up with ghostwriters who spend hours interviewing the subject and then write a book for them. It costs between ,900 and ,450 depending on how long and detailed you want the book to be, and how many pictures you want to include."Ultimately, the content is up to the customer, to change and have it the way they want," says Bruining.Retired Navy Pilot Frank Miley wrote his life story on his own before he knew about Story Terrace. He says putting it in writing was emotional, but also crucial, so his family knows what he went through during the Vietnam War."I didn't do it for glory," Miley says. "I just wanted to let them know that I did my job to keep them safe."Jim Reily, who runs the docent program on the USS Midway, says that first-hand interaction is the best way for people to hear about veterans' contributions to the country."It's gratifying to talk to a bunch of folks who have never been on a ship and explain what happens and see the awe and wonder in their eyes," Reily says. "Our freedom isn't free. It takes sacrifice, and it takes the good efforts of the several hundred thousand folks that are in the service right now to protect our freedoms."Bruining says it's especially important to get these stories preserved now, as generations of veterans from World War II, Korea, and Vietnam are passing away."The understand of what happened and the lessons we have to learn from history about the things that went wrong, but also the heroic tales of humankind, they will slowly get lost," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This month, Old Town's Whaley House Museum will open its doors for extended hours and invite guests in for a night of haunts and history.Every October, visitors can stop by during the museum's extended hours. This month, they take place Oct. 24 - 31. The two-story home and store addition was added in 1857 by Thomas Whaley. It was the first two-story brick edifice in San Diego and built using bricks made in Whaley's brickyard.The house operated as one of the first stores in the Old Town area and at one time was Whaley's home, a courtroom, a general store, and a theater simultaneously.While the store served the community in multiple ways during the 1800s, it seems its residents of one of the most haunted homes in America have stayed behind to watch over the grounds.During tours, museum guides will explore the stories of Whaley; his wife, Anna; their children, Violet and Tommie; and "Yankee" Jim Robinson — all of whom are believed to still be at the home in some form."Yankee Jim" was hanged on the grounds in 1852. Guests have reported heavy footsteps and windows being unlatched and opened — even Whaley himself. Others reported seeing Whaley on the home's upper landing, and a full apparition of Anna in the downstairs rooms or garden.Tickets for Halloween tours are for adults and for children, seniors, and military members. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This past March, as schools shut down and distance learning started, Richard Cowan and his family were one of hundreds who didn't have internet access."We were actually using mobile hot spots or venturing to the library," Cowan said. Then he learned about Connect2Compete, a program through Cox Communications that gave families free internet to start followed by a low cost plan. "We've been able to enhance, and better be prepared for school and a different curriculum that they're requiring now."Cox Communications Vice President of Government and Public Affairs, Chanelle Hawken, said it's just one of the ways they continued to help students stay connected for the fall. "We've put a lot of resources time and energy to connect kids."Cox also partnered with David Harp's Foundation, a music school for low income and at-risk kids. "For them, its even harder in this distance learning environment. They may not be getting the support of family members to help them stay online," Hawken said. They turned the East Village campus into a digital hub with free wifi for underprivilaged students."It's a new world I'll say and we're looking at ways to be creative. Just working one-on-one with school districts to see if they need devices because we have our grant with computers or to see if kids need a connection."They also had Cox wifi hotspots scattered throughout the county for free, at the start of the school year."It's been a community effort where people are chipping in to make sure kids are ready for back to school, I know its so stressful for parents right now," Hawken concluded. 1622

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department says it paid out nearly million in overtime throughout the course of protests and riots in the county.According to the department, ,862,798 was paid out from May 28 through June 4, 2020.The department said more than 24,000 hours were worked throughout the protests.The figure includes overtime for sworn deputies and support staff. They added that, throughout the protests and riots, no one had time off, and that all vacation time was canceled during the unrest.The news comes after rioters set fire to several buildings and vehicles in La Mesa in late May.Several stores were also looted, including Walmart, Target, Vons, and other stores and shopping centers. 737
