TROY, Mich. — A man from Warren who spent months fighting COVID-19 was finally released from the hospital.Zahid Raza was released Friday from Beaumont Hospital, where he'd been fighting COVID-19 since March.He said he still has lasting effects like wheezing, and because of the virus, he's also having problems with his kidneys.Zahid went into Beaumont Hospital in Troy on March 30 because he couldn't breathe. He said one of his last memories was hearing medical staff say they were using the last available ventilator on him.He spent the next several weeks in a coma — even his 65th birthday. Two men who claim to be members of the Boogaloo Bois are facing federal charges for trying to help Hamas, a designated foreign terrorist organization.Boogaloo Bois and sub-groups are a loosely-connected group of people with violent anti-government stances; some members were seen at racial injustice demonstrations this summer wearing Hawaiian shirts and carrying long weapons. Many have a negative view of officers and government structure, advocating for the injury or death of police.Social media groups claiming to be part of the Boogaloo Bois movement have attracted attention this year and tens of thousands of members online, according to USA Today.Michael Solomon and Benjamin Teeter call themselves members of the group, and of a sub-group called Boojahideen, and were allegedly seen opening carrying firearms in residential neighborhoods in Minneapolis following the death of George Floyd and the demonstrations that followed.According to the FBI’s investigation of Solomon and Teeter, they “possessed firearms and substantial quantities of ammunition and that Solomon, Teeter, and other members of the Boogaloo Bois and Boojahideen discussed committing acts of violence against police officers and other targets in furtherance of the Boojahideen’s stated goal of overthrowing the government and replacing its police forces.” 1343

VERMILION PARISH, La. – A Louisiana sheriff’s office asked anyone who didn’t evacuate for Hurricane Laura to write their identity down, put it in a plastic bag and place it in their pocket. The Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office made the request in a Facebook post on Wednesday, before the hurricane pummeled the state as a Category 4 storm.“Please evacuate and if you choose to stay and we can’t get to you, write your name, address, social security number and next of kin and put it a Ziplock bag in your pocket,” wrote officials. “Praying that it does not come to this!”The office said those who chose to stay and face the dangerous storm should understand that rescue efforts won’t begin until after the hurricane and storm surge has passed and it is safe.“Expecting the worse but praying for the best,” wrote the office.A mandatory evacuation was ordered for the parish, which is located along the Gulf Coast, south of Lafayette. A curfew has also been put in place for the community until further notice.The hurricane made landfall along the border of Louisiana and Texas at about 1 a.m. CDT on Thursday. "He was particularly liked by the children. They like to run up and touch him, and take photos next to him," said Lawrie.The store mascot turned neighborhood icon vanished Tuesday night. In the surveillance video, a vehicle is seen pulling up just before 10:30 p.m. A man gets out and walks toward statue and pushes it to check the weight. He then walks back toward the truck, before turning around and eventually picking up the statue. Finally, he tosses it into the truck and drives off."Disappointed for sure," said Lawrie.Lawrie and his wife Lynn are both at a loss."Feels sad and empty because he was such a part of us. Customers are really upset," said Lynn Lawrie."The Baker Man" was first purchased at an antique warehouse in Corona. They believe it's fiberglass and weighed less than 100 pounds. The owners are making a direct appeal to the thief."He's a special friend and we would like him returned," he said.
