The Miami Marlins announced Friday that they had hired Kim Ng as their new general manager, making Ng the first female GM in MLB history.According to ESPN, Ng is now the highest-ranking woman employed by any of the 30 MLB teams and is likely the first woman to hold the title of general manager for any major pro sports team — though other women, like former Oakland Raiders CEO Amy Trask and Los Angeles Lakers President Jeanie Buss have held executive roles with pro sports teams.Ng is also the second person of Asian descent to lead the baseball operations of an MLB team, following in the footsteps of Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi."This challenge is one I don't take lightly. When I got into this business, it seemed unlikely a woman would lead a Major League team, but I am dogged in the pursuit of my goals," Ng said in a statement. "My goal is now to bring championship baseball to Miami. I am both humbled and eager to continue building the winning culture our fans expect and deserve."Ng has worked in the MLB commissioner's office since 2011. Prior to that, she served as the assistant general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers (2002-2011) and the New York Yankees (1998-2001). She also was a longtime staffer for the Chicago White Sox (1990-1996).During her years with the Yankees, Ng oversaw a roster that included shortstop Derek Jeter, who is now a part of the Marlins' ownership group. 1433
The National Weather Service is projecting Southern Arizona's fire season to be more active than normal."There's leftover dry fuels from last year, and there's newly formed fine fuels," Warning Coordination Meteorologist Ken Drozd said.Above average daytime high temperatures, combined with storm systems bringing wind but no rain, and very dry conditions, are some of the reasons why the NWS projects May and June to have the more fire activity than normal.Due to a wet February, there is now more dry fuel in the region, according to Drozd. Sometimes, significant rain events leading into fire season can delay or shorten it, but that wasn't the case this year."Those new grasses that greened up from that precipitation event have now dried out again, due to the warm temperatures we've experienced lately," Drozd said."The hotter you get, the more you're going to dry things out. It just keeps things dried out unless you get some intermediate rain that'll come in, and again, there's none in the forecast right now."Last year, fires ripped through Southern Arizona from April to July, blackening landscapes and destroying homes in their paths. People from communities all through the region were forced to evacuate, sometimes on multiple occasions. The American Red Cross is urging people prepare ahead of time. The judge in Bill Cosby's indecent assault trial ruled Tuesday a jury can consider as evidence the comedian's 2005 admission that he procured Quaaludes for women he wanted to bed.Accuser Andrea Constand is one of dozens of women who have accused the former TV star of drugging and sexually assaulting them, an allegation Cosby denies.Judge Steven O'Neill's decision came amid a more than hourlong hearing, during which the jury was not present. The hearing dealt with attorney-client privilege, Fifth Amendment concerns and Cosby's defense team's plans to call one of Constand's civil attorneys to the stand, as well as a toxicologist who will dispute her account of how the drugs affected her. 702
