MIDDLETON, Idaho — Fourteen staff members at Heights Elementary in Idaho have been placed on administrative leave after dressing up for Halloween in costumes many parents and locals are calling "offensive" and "racist."The teachers and other staff came under fire for dressing as a border wall and group of Mexicans on Halloween last week."They should have some kind of sensitivity training — some kind of interaction with other cultures because this — this is what they are passing on to the kids. So it's normalizing — for them — that these kinds of things are acceptable, when, in my opinion, they are not," said Kevin Vallejo, Boise resident.Middleton School District has now announced it is doing just that. Administrators said there will be an all-district staff meeting for cultural sensitivity training on Nov. 7. Officials said these kinds of training "will continue throughout this school year and at the start of each school year moving forward," according to the administration's release.The decision was announced Saturday at a special school board meeting where the announcement was made and then the school board went into executive session. The superintendent did not disclose the names of the employees involved.In response to the controversy, Mark Hopkins has been named principal at Heights Elementary “for now,” Middleton said. Hopkins began the year as principal of Purple Sage Elementary, according to Idaho Ed News. Board members participated in a nearly two-hour executive session before returning to open session and reading a statement condemning the employees’ actions.Photos of the employees posing in their costumes were originally posted on the school district's Facebook page and then later removed. The entire district's Facebook page has since been taken down."A patron reached out to me and was disturbed by the photos and then he shared those with me and I was equally, I was disappointed and I saw some inappropriate and insensitive costumes," Dr. Josh Middleton, superintendent, Middleton School District said Friday. Friday, the superintendent said the costumes were part of a curriculum unit on character, respect and kindness. Superintendent Josh Middleton said this is a learning opportunity for the district and other schools.  2332

Maricopa County, Arizona Sheriff's officials say a man has been taken into custody after threatening to shoot churchgoers in the north Valley. The investigation began on February 19, when detectives received a Facebook post in Romanian. The post reportedly translated into concerning statements, but nothing specific about the North Valley Romanian Pentecostal Church. A witness reportedly overheard a phone conversation in Romanian on speakerphone. In that call, Ismaiel Damian indicated he was planning on entering the church to shoot and kill many people in attendance with his machine gun. Detectives monitored Damian leaving for the church and took him into custody on Sunday.A .38 Special Taurus revolver was located in his vehicle. Damian was booked into a jail for misdemeanor use of an electronic communication to terrify, intimidate, threaten or harass.  907

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Oprah Winfrey is using her influence to push for justice in the police killing of Breonna Taylor.The media mogul is having dozens of billboards installed around the city of Louisville, WAVE reports. MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — An alligator crossing a road in Manatee County led to a deadly crash on Thursday night, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) says.According to an FHP press release, an alligator crossing State Road 70 walked into the path of a car at around 10:40 p.m. local time. The driver tried to swerve out of the way and lost control, authorities said.Troopers say the car ran off the road, into a ditch full of water, and then crashed into a tree. Massachusetts is the first state since the deadly shooting in Las Vegas last month to ban bump stocks, the gun accessory the shooter used to increase his rate of fire.Bump stocks became a major source of discussion among lawmakers across the country after the attachments were found on the guns of Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock, who killed 58 and injured some 500 last month. But talk of banning the devices nationwide appears to have stalled.Beginning in 2018, penalties for the possession or use of a bump stock or trigger crank in Massachusetts will range from probation to life in prison, Representative David Linsky, a Democrat who proposed the amendment, told CNN.The new law defines a bump stock as "any device for a weapon that increases the rate of fire achievable with such weapon by using energy from the recoil of the weapon to generate a reciprocating action that facilitates repeated activation of the trigger."In other words, the devices allow semi-automatic rifles to fire more rapidly, similar to automatic weapons.
