The destructive storm surge has receded, and the clean up has begun from Hurricane Laura in Texas and Louisiana. But officials along this shattered stretch of Louisiana coast are warning returning residents they will face weeks without power or water amid the hot, stifling days of late summer. Hundreds of thousands of people in two of the hardest-hit states are reported to be without power following the severe storm. The U.S. toll from the Category 4 hurricane stood at 16 deaths, with more than half of those killed by carbon monoxide poisoning from the unsafe operation of generators. President Donald Trump landed in Louisiana Saturday afternoon to tour the damage in Louisiana and will head to Texas next. 720
The chemotherapy dripped through a catheter in his chest. Cancer patient Robert Goodman had burned through his paid sick days while undergoing surgery and chemotherapy for colon cancer. The Florida public school teacher figured he needed at least 20 additional sick days to deal with more chemotherapy, days he just didn't have. So on July 23, right there in a room at Tomsich Health and Medical Center of Palm Beach County, Goodman took a selfie, posted it on Facebook and appealed for help.Within four days he had enough sick days to cover an entire semester."I couldn't believe it happened so fast," Goodman, 56, told CNN.Teachers, staff members, administrators and even lunchroom workers who pay into the Florida retirement system transferred 75 sick days to Goodman."Educators all over the country were reaching out to me to donate their sick days, even professors over at Florida Atlantic University," he said. "I felt guilty because I knew there were people who had it much worse than me." 1003
The CBS board of directors is in the process of picking outside counsel to conduct an investigation after company CEO Les Moonves was accused of sexual misconduct. In a statement, CBS said that "no other action" was taken on the matter at Monday's board meeting. The meeting was scheduled before a bombshell report in The New Yorker Friday detailed allegations against the CEO. Six women told the magazine that Moonves sexually harassed them.In a statement to The New Yorker that was also obtained by CNNMoney on Friday, Moonves said he has "promoted a culture of respect and opportunity for all employees" throughout his tenure at CBS."I recognize that there were times decades ago when I may have made some women uncomfortable by making advances," Moonves said. "Those were mistakes, and I regret them immensely. But I always understood and respected — and abided by the principle — that 'no' means 'no,' and I have never misused my position to harm or hinder anyone's career."The idea that Moonves should step aside during the probe was raised by at least some board members this weekend, according to one source who spoke to CNNMoney on Sunday. The board also said on Monday that it would postpone its annual meeting of stockholders, which was scheduled to be held August 10. A new date has not yet been announced. It was not clear why the board decided to reschedule that meeting. 1400
