SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego's first female police chief will walk out of police headquarters for the final time Thursday.Shelley Zimmerman, 58, will leave San Diego Police Department nearly four years to the day City Council leaders approved her as police chief. She was selected to lead the city's police force by then-Mayor-elect Kevin Faulconer in February 2014.Zimmerman took over the position from William Landsdowne, who stepped down from chief after more than 10 years following a growing scandal of sexual misconduct against SDPD officers.RELATED: New San Diego police Chief David Nisleit sworn inZimmerman departs SDPD after a 35-year career in the police force after moving to San Diego from Ohio in 1981. Incoming Police Chief David Nisleit, like her, has worked for SDPD for more than 30 years. It has been my absolute honor and privilege to serve the @CityofSanDiego as a @SanDiegoPD Officer for 35 years and these last 4 as your Chief. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University is celebrating yet another MVP athlete on one of sports' biggest stages.Wednesday, former SDSU baseball ace Stephen Strasburg was award the 2019 World Series MVP award after the Washington Nationals won Game 7 against the Houston Astros. As special an honor as that is, the award also means SDSU has two former players that have been named MVP in their respective sports — in the same season. In June, former Aztec star and then-Toronto Raptor Kawhi Leonard was named the NBA Finals MVP. The pair of postseason MVP awards in the same season are a first for the university. 625

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to send a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom requesting more reopening guidance, after hitting pause on reopening businesses last week due to community outbreaks. With Supervisor Nathan Fletcher as the only dissenting vote, the board voted to send a letter requesting state guidance on reopening wedding receptions, hotel meetings and conferences, street fairs, playgrounds, and team competitions. They heard from dozens of people pleading with them to help save their industries. "Our industry is struggling to survive. There are people still wanting to celebrate these events which is leading to bootleg events," said one caller who works in the event industry.Another woman called in to share the challenges of trying to plan a wedding." I've had to push my wedding back twice this year and have lost thousands of dollars due to the uncertainty of when private events will be allowed," said Rachel Lee. The request doesn't mean the county is reopening more businesses early, but it will allow them to prepare to do so under state guidance once local health officials give approval.RELATED: San Diego County pauses future reopenings after hitting community outbreak trigger"Today my motion to push for state guidance to open more businesses and activities was passed by a 4-1 vote. We will send a letter to Gov. Newsom on behalf of the BOS. This requests local control, for our public health officials to control reopening as safe and appropriate," Supervisor Jim Desmond said in a statement. The request comes after the county paused any reopenings, even if approved by the state, on Friday after reporting eight community outbreaks in a week. Monday, the county reported 10 community outbreaks. The county's limit is seven in a week. Exceeding that limit allows the county health officer to modify the public health order. RELATED: How San Diego County officials monitor coronavirus trendsIn addition to the temporary suspension of any more businesses reopening, the county said it would begin targeted enforcement of businesses that violate public health orders.Fletcher issued a statement on Tuesday saying, in part, it's "reckless and irresponsible" to propose the additional reopenings."San Diego County has hit the community outbreak 'trigger' for six consecutive days and recent days have generated not only the highest reporting of new COVID cases but also a doubling of the percentage of total tests being positive. Given these facts, it is reckless and irresponsible to propose expedited re-opening of additional in-door close contact group gatherings without any restrictions on the number of attendees," Fletcher said. "This would not only increase the spread of COVID but also threatens our economic recovery. We need to exercise caution, restraint and slow things down, not speed them up." 2865

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo's 7-month-old endangered Matschie’s tree kangaroo has finally emerged from her mother's pouch. The young "joey" has not been named, but is beginning to spend more time outside her mom, Polly, according to zoo officials.“The joey, right now, cannot get enough things in her mouth,” said Breanne Barney, keeper at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “She’s constantly trying to eat leaves, greens, various vegetables, corn—even chewing on moms’ ears, tail, hands and feet!”The little kangaroo doesn't stray far from her mom though, as she learns to climb and maneuver outside of the pouch, the zoo says.Matschie’s tree kangaroos have an estimated gestation period of about 45 days and are about the size of a jelly bean when born. Once born, they crawl back into their mom's pouch and attach to a nipple to gain nourishment and grow. Tree kangaroos remain in the pouch for a few months.“Polly is an excellent mother, and consistently grooming her little one,” Barney said. “Due to their small population numbers, this joey provides a spark of hope for the future of this species.”The kangaroos are listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's list of threatened species. There are less than 2,500 of the kangaroos in their native habitats of Papua New Guinea and the Huon Peninsula.Unfortunately, they are hunted by humans for food and trade, according to the zoo. The zoo's Matschie’s tree kangaroos came to the Safari Park’s Walkabout Australia in 2018 as part of a Species Survival Plan breeding program. 1573

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Santa Ana winds and low humidity will bring fire danger to San Diego County this week.Relative humidity is down to 10% to 15% in the county, according to the National Weather Service San Diego, causing localized fire weather conditions through Tuesday ahead of moderate to strong Santa Ana winds peaking on Thursday. The high wind weather is expected to last Wednesday night into Friday, the NWS said. Winds will gradually weaken next weekend, but dry air will remain in the county."It is already starting out dry preceding this next event which is not good," the NWS wrote. "Relative humidity will plummet further and by Thursday, single-digit and teen relative humidity could drive all the way to the coast."The county can expect to see temperatures steadily rise 5 to 10 degrees above normal west of the mountains and about 3 to 6 degrees above normal elsewhere into Tuesday, NWS says.Despite this, cooler temperatures will work their way into the county overnight."Nights will remain cool, especially for the wind-sheltered areas. Local breezy conditions will continue below the passes and on the coastal slopes of the mountains each night and morning," NWS said. 1193
