SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Prior to today's San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl, the Port of San Diego will host the annual Solar Turbines 5K run/walk and the Holiday Bowl Parade along Harbor Drive.The Port will host the 24th annual Solar Turbines 5K run and walk at 9:45 a.m. and the parade at 10 a.m. Participants in the 5K will run and walk from the corner of Harbor Drive and Ash Street to Ruocco Park. The parade will begin in front of the County Administration Building and process south down Harbor Drive to its intersection with Pacific Highway.According to Port officials, the parade will include 29 giant balloons, 10 marching bands and multiple floats and drill teams. The marching bands from Northwestern University and the University of Utah, the two teams playing in the Holiday Bowl, will perform during the parade."The Port of San Diego Holiday Bowl Parade is one of the Port's signature events, bringing approximately 100,000 spectators, including many from out of state, to the beautiful San Diego bayfront," said Board of Port Commissioners Chairman Rafael Castellanos. "It's a wonderful way to activate the waterfront and to add an economic boost to the region."County Supervisor Ron Roberts will serve as the parade's grand marshal. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The city of San Diego will begin enforcing parking regulations again starting Oct. 1 with a two-week grace period before full enforcement Oct. 15.The city temporarily suspended parking enforcement on March 16 following the COVID-19 stay-at-home order. Multiple attempts in the following months to reinforce parking regulations have been thwarted by ongoing shutdown orders.In developing a plan to restart parking enforcement, city staff consulted with several business groups representing communities across San Diego.Starting Thursday, the city will issue written warnings for vehicles parked in violation of:-- Posted street sweeping routes-- Metered parking restrictions-- Curb time limits-- Commercial zonesCitations will continue to be issued for vehicles parked illegally at red, white and blue painted curbs. Drivers are encouraged to follow posted signage when looking for a parking space.Although street sweeping has continued during the public health emergency, the resumption of enforcement will allow city sweepers to sweep debris and dust pollution along the curb line to maintain improved water quality and reduce the potential for flooding as the rainy season approaches.During the two-week grace period, courtesy notices will be distributed to inform residents of the enforcement restart. 1330

SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- San Diego lifeguards and firefighters Sunday rescued a surfer who suffered a medical emergency while in the water in the Bird Rock area, authorities said.At 12:36 p.m., lifeguards and firefighters from the San Diego Fire- Rescue Department responded to the cliffs near Calumet Park about a surfer experiencing an unknown medical emergency, Lt. Andy Lerum of Lifeguard Services said.The man in his 60s experienced a possible heart-related ailment or seizure, but rescuers were not sure of the exact nature of his medical emergency, Lerum said.The man swam to the beach, where he collapsed and lifeguards began tending to him, the lieutenant said. He was taken by stretcher about 30 yards to the bottom of the cliff.Firefighters used the department's Rescue 44 truck, equipped with a crane, to lift the surfer from the beach to the top of the cliff, Lerum said. An ambulance then took the man to a La Jolla hospital for evaluation. He was reportedly in stable condition. 995

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Humane Society announced Wednesday that it will offer refunds to San Diego residents who overpaid for certain services between July 2018 and last week. Humane Society officials recently determined that some residents paid fees that were higher than the amounts the city of San Diego adopted on July 1, 2018, for local animal services. The organization plans to contact and offer refunds to residents affected by the overcharging that occurred between July 1 last year and Nov. 19 of this year. The organization also offered discounted services to residents via promotions intended to increase animal adoptions and make it easier to adopt a pet. Residents who paid for animal services at discounted prices will not be contacted, according to the Humane Society. 800

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Sunday identified a 24-year-old man who was fatally wounded in a shooting in Emerald Hills on Wednesday.The victim was identified as Gai Wal, who died of his wounds in the early morning on Friday, according to Lt. Matt Dobbs of the San Diego Police Department.At 5:51 p.m. Wednesday, police received a ShotSpotter activation in the area of 6100 Imperial Ave. It was soon followed by a second ShotSpotter activation near 6300 Imperial Ave. The SpotShotter is a device used by police to locate and alert whenever it detects the sound of gunshots.When patrol officers arrived on the scene, they found a man down in the parking lot of a business with an apparent gunshot wound to his upper body, Dobbs said.The officers rendered aid to the man, who was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, the lieutenant said.
