People from across the country flock to Florida for the endless warm weather and miles of beaches, but as the November presidential election inches closer, people are turning their heads to the state for another reason.“Florida is the largest swing state,” said Aubrey Jewett, a Political Science Professor at the University of Central Florida. “If you look at the last six presidential elections, Florida has voted three times for Republicans and three times for Democrats and each time for the winner.”However, for hundreds of thousands of Floridians, this election means something else.“I grew up here in Sanford, Florida. Born and raised,” Davion Hampton said. “I have 15 children, well 16 children including one of my steps.”Hampton wears many hats in his community. Father, electrical engineer, landscaper, part owner of this convenience store, among other things.“Proper living arrangements is what I do, and feeding the people,” he said.But he hasn’t always been seen by others as the provider he is now. “I was arrested in 2008, charged with conspiracy of trafficking cocaine, my first charge ever. First time I ever was incarcerated, first time ever with a set of bracelets on,” he explained. “I did 30.5 months in the Department State of Correction.”It’s a seemingly stark contrast to who he is today, the man wearing many hats and the employer of more than 30 people in his community.“Had I not gone to prison God knows, only knows, where I’d be today,” Hampton said.Now, he’s facing a battle with thousands of others in Florida, a battle over the right to vote.“I’m currently not a registered voter, I currently still owe about ,000 in fines and fees,” he said. “I’ve been paying on it for the last 10 years. Since I’ve been home almost, I’ve been paying on it every month. 0 a month and it just seems like that thing isn’t moving.”In 2018, Florida passed Amendment 4, which restored voting rights to most convicted felons who served their time, as long as they weren’t charged with murder or sex crimes.“Up until just a few years ago, Florida was one of a handful of states that mostly, permanently disenfranchised convicted felons,” Jewett said. “The end result is that over some time, Florida by some estimate ended up with about 1.4 million felons.” Jewett has spent more than two decades studying Florida politics.“Then the big issue became, what does all terms of sentence mean?” he added.In came the debate of fines and fees associated with the charges, and whether or not they needed to be paid before former felons could register to vote. The backers of Amendment 4 claim it’s an illegal poll tax, one U.S. district court judge agreed, but the state filed an appeal which left thousands unsure if they can even register, even if they could afford to pay.“Thus the thought is that anything that might alter the balance, either favoring Republicans or Democrats, might be a really big deal because you might actually sway the way Florida votes in a presidential election and in a close president election, that might actually make a difference in who wins,” Jewett explained.Another issue lies in the fact that there is no central recording system of who owes what. It’s all county based and how they record differs, so some former felons who have completed their sentence may not know about any lingering fines or fees.“It’s not about swinging left or swinging right, it's about swinging straight forward into the issues that impact people with felony convictions and that's what we’re most concerned about,” Desmond Meade said. Meade is the Executive Director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, a grassroots membership organization run by returning citizens.“We believe that no American citizen should be forced to choose between putting food on their kids plate or voting,” he said. The coalition is working with former felons on identifying unpaid fees, and helping pay them off. “Probably about an average of ,000 per individual,” Meade said. “We were able to raise over million.”But for Hampton, those fees he owes that have accrued interest over the years may not be paid off before the October 5 voter registration deadline in Florida.“I was always under the impression that the fines and fees needed to be paid before you can vote,” he said. “Every individual that is a tax paying citizen should have the right to vote.”Instead, he said he brings awareness to the community, to help others register to vote in the meantime.“My take for this particular election is that no matter what happens at this point at the court level, it's probably going to be too late to see any big increase in voter registration,” Jewett said. 4679

Most existing homes sold in October — 7 in 10 — were on the market less than a month, according to the NAR.With a slender stock of homes selling fast, buyers have little power. “The control is in the seller’s hands because of supply and demand,” says Terri Robinson, a Realtor with Re/Max Select Properties in Ashburn, Virginia.Set realistic expectationsExpect months to elapse between the first step of checking your credit reports to the final step of closing on the home. “The first thing that I hope people understand is it’s not an overnight process,” says Marc J. Jenkins, a real estate agent with Prime Property Partners in Atlanta.Jenkins tells first-timer clients that it typically takes five to eight months to buy a home. Understanding that homebuying timeline “prepares them mentally, emotionally and financially to see this process through.” Would-be buyers are prone to burnout if they expect the process to take a month, he says.Everyone wants a bargain, but buyers need to recalibrate the meaning of that word so it applies to today’s competitive environment. “A bargain, if I were to redefine that, is the home that you want for the price that you’re willing to pay,” Robinson says.Know where you’ll compromiseMore than three-quarters of home buyers in their 20s and 30s made compromises, according to NAR’s 2020 Home Buyers and Sellers Generational Trends Report. The most common compromises had to do with the condition or price of the home.So before you start seriously looking at homes, decide what you need and what you won’t budge on. You may have a maximum price and commute time, a minimum size or other requirements. Those are your deal breakers. Write them down. Resist the temptation to compromise on deal breakers, even when you feel discouraged. For all else, keep an open mind.Make decisions fastIn today’s market, many homes are on the market for less than a month, so it’s important to make an offer quickly once you find one you like. Let your list of deal breakers be your guide. If a home meets your criteria, including an acceptable price, it may be worth making an offer. Again, quickly, because many sellers field multiple offers within a day or two of listing the home and planting a “for sale” sign in the yard.“Even as a first-time home buyer, they may have to make a quick decision whether or not to buy a home,” Robinson says. To have the offer taken seriously, have a preapproval letter from a lender and make a competitive offer, she adds.Don’t take rejection personallyWhen first-time buyers make offers, “they’re going to get rejected many times,” says Laura Moreno, host of the “First Time Home Buyer Podcast” and founder of a tech startup called HomeFlow that offers an all-in-one homebuying platform.As rejected offers pile up, they take it personally or feel worthless, Moreno says. “What I tell them is just breathe. It’s not a judgment against you.”You might get lucky and have your first offer accepted. But don’t count on it. Realize that for the seller, this is a business decision.Wait before you celebrateYour offer was accepted? Great! Just remember that the home inspection and lender’s appraisal are coming next, and either of them can knock the deal awry. The more excited you get about the seller giving your offer a thumbs-up, the more disappointed you’ll be if you have to give the deal a thumbs-down after the inspection or appraisal.Think about the seller’s needsYou’re focused on your own needs and problems. That’s understandable, but there’s a benefit to thinking about the seller’s needs, too.Jenkins advises making the offer attractive to the seller. That might mean keeping the inspection period short: maybe just three to five days, so the seller can put the home back on the market promptly if you’re dissatisfied with the inspection and decide to move on.Having a preapproval letter from a reputable mortgage lender, paying all of your own closing costs and paying some or all of your agent’s commission are other ways to meet the seller’s needs.Have a backup plan: Don’t buy yetAs fervently as you want to buy a house in 2021, your best option might be to wait until fortune favors you. Parts of Hawaii are under a hurricane watch as Category 3 Hurricane Douglas has its sights set on the island state. The hurricane watch is in effect for the Big Island and Maui County.Packing top winds of 115 MPH as of 11 a.m. HT (5 p.m. ET), Douglas is moving toward Hawaii at 18 MPH. The storm was positioned 785 miles from Hilo, or 985 miles from Honolulu.Douglas is relatively small, with hurricane-force winds only extending 25 miles from the center.While the powerful hurricane is in the open ocean, it has been slowly losing strength. The National Hurricane Center projects it will weaken into a tropical storm by Sunday night. But the storm could still be a hurricane when it crosses the island chain, which would make it the first hurricane to directly hit the island in more than two decades.Category 4 Iniki of 1992. was the most recent hurricane to strike Hawaii directly. (KGTV) -- Three men riding in the trunk of a car during an apparent human-smuggling attempt in the East County highlands were injured Tuesday, one seriously, when the driver crashed the sedan at high speed while trying to evade the U.S. Border Patrol.The 18-year-old driver of the orange Mazda 6 sped off when federal personnel directed him into a secondary inspection area at a USBP checkpoint on Interstate 8 in Pine Valley about 11:45 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.Border Patrol agents gave chase, tailing the car to the west as the young man fled at speeds exceeding 100 mph, CHP public-affairs Officer Travis Garrow said.RELATED: Two DACA recipients arrested for involvement in human smuggling?Near state Route 79, the suspect lost control of the sedan while trying to use the southern shoulder of I-8 to pass slower-moving traffic.  The Mazda veered off the north side of the freeway, struck a wooden post and tumbled down a grassy embankment, overturning on the way down before coming to rest on its wheels.One of the occupants of the trunk, a 31-year-old man, was ejected during the crash and was badly hurt, Garrow said.The other two, ages 27 and 19, suffered moderately serious injuries.
