(KGTV) - A North County 7th grade teacher is the SDCCU Classroom Hero for the month of June.This social studies instructor has a knack for engaging students by asking them to step into the shoes of those they're learning about."Now, when we look at America, it's a little different here right?" Joe Heath queries his social studies class at Aviara Oaks Middle School in Carlsbad.Heath has been teaching for more than 30 years, and this day has his 7th graders focused on pre-20th century Japanese culture."Most of the marriages were actually arranged," Heath explains to one student. "Your Mom or your Dad choosing your spouse. How would you feel about that?" For Coach Heath, as his students like to call him, Social Studies is about connecting and empathizing with people who lived through a different time and culture - not simply memorizing abstract names and dates. "I don't take that approach." said Heath, "In large part because I don't remember those names or those dates. I'm really good with remembering concepts and how people dealt with difficulties historically....and those same difficulties we face today.""It's not just absorbing facts where you write it down and then say it later," said student Rylan Hoffius. "It's actually talking about it and understanding the deeper meanings of it." Coach Heath's lectures are like conversations as he prompts his students to take part. CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — Thursday's heavy storm caused significant damage in the North County Plaza shopping center in Carlsbad, particularly to Homeroom Hourly Child Care. Homeroom's owner tells 10News that current estimates are it will take six weeks to repair all the damage to the interior."I was pretty pessimistic last night," assistant director Erin Devries told 10News. Shorty after, tiles began falling from the ceiling, along with a deluge of rain. Out of fear of danger from a soaked electrical system, the teachers turned out the lights, then evacuated the children from the building, seeking shelter in the Orange Theory gym next door. (KGTV) — Joining Oceanside and California state beaches, Carlsbad city officials announced Friday that they will close beach parking lots for the July 4 weekend.The city says that beach parking lots will be closed July 4 and 5 in Carlsbad, over concerns of crowds from counties where beaches are closed traveling to the region.Carlsbad's decision comes after a letter from the Governor's Office of Emergency Services and days after Oceanside instituted a similar beach parking closure.RELATED: Crowds flock to San Diego beaches for Fourth of July weekendEarlier this week, San Diego County Supervisors said they did not plan to mandate county beaches to close and would leave it up to cities to decide themselves."At the time of writing, beaches under the jurisdiction of local governments within San Diego County are the only beaches without visitation restrictions throughout all of Southern California, and therefore are attracting thousands of residents from outside your coastal communities and creating significant potential for disease transmission, particularly in crowded restaurants, bars, retail, and hotels," Cal OES wrote in a letter to the cities of San Diego, Imperial Beach, Coronado, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Oceanside.
