SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Students, friends, and family are mourning the sudden death of a beloved East County teacher.John Berray, a longtime and well-known math teacher in Grossmont Union High School District, was seriously injured when he was leaving for work on Jan. 29.For an unknown reason, he got out of his car without it being placed in "park" and became pinned between his vehicle and his wife's vehicle, the county Medical Examiner said. He was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for an anoxic brain injury before he was pronounced dead on Feb. 12.According to a statement from Grossmont Union High School District, Berray worked at the district office as a digital learning coach. He most recently served as the district's math curriculum specialist where his passion for math led to innovations being used district wide.By all accounts, Berray was not only an exceptional educator but a husband, father, and friend.His career started in 1995 at West Hills High. He was selected by his students as the Golden Apple Award winner in 2000 and once again in 2008. His peers named him the West Hill High School teacher of the year in 2014. He went on to be named one of five 2014-15 San Diego County Teachers of the Year.After his passing, social media was filled with people living their thoughts and memories of Berray and his impact.Students, colleagues, and family will honor Berray with a memorial planned on March 14, Pi Day, at Journey Community Church in La Mesa. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The California Highway Patrol has ruled out street racing and DUI as causes of a crash on Interstate 805 in Sorrento Valley that left a man with serious injuries. Traffic came to a standstill in the northbound lanes of the freeway about 2 p.m. when a silver Mercedes SUV hit the driver of a blue Nissan. Witnesses told the CHP the Nissan suddenly stopped in a lane and the driver got out of the car. CHP says the Nissan became disabled and the driver got out of the car after pulling off to the side of the road. The Nissan’s driver was struck and thrown 135 feet before landing on the pavement. The CHP said the man had severe head injuries. A total of four cars were involved in the resulting pileup. Three people were taken to the hospital, San Diego Fire-Rescue reported, but no one aside from the Nissan's driver was seriously hurt. The other drivers stopped and cooperated with the investigation. The affected lanes of the freeway reopened about four hours after the crash.The Nissan was recently purchased, according to the CHP. Investigators said the driver might be a member of the military. 1127

A San Diego Police flyer indicated he was prepared to meet friends and never arrived.Billingsly earned a degree in business administration and marketing from SDSU. He traveled to his native Sacramento and earned money for his return to San Diego, his mother Christel told 10News.Christel Billingsley said her son was looking for a job and wanted to save on rent. After June 1, he did not have a permanent address and started couch-surfing at friends’ homes in Pacific Beach.Wesley and his Ford Expedition disappeared June 12. “It’s completely out of character,” said his mother.Christel paid her son’s phone bill and described him as a social media junkie. About two months ago, the phone stopped showing activity.“Everything stopped on June 12. He just vanished off the face of this earth,” Christel said.Christel is employed as a school officer manager in Sacramento and recently returned to her job after summer break.
