CHICAGO — Millions of frontline healthcare workers are rolling up their sleeves for the first of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine. First out is Pfizer’s vaccine, and now, an FDA panel has recommended Moderna’s vaccine for emergency use authorization. The available Pfizer shot requires a complex and precise procedure for it to work.Before the needle even breaks the skin, a strict protocol must be followed precisely.“We're going to put it take it from the negative 80 ultra-low storage and we're gonna defrost it to refrigerator temperatures,” explained Erin Shaughnessy, director of pharmacy at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. “That's gonna give us five days of stability for the vaccine.”It’s like something out of Mission Impossible.“We installed additional security cameras and we have additional security protocols,” said Shaughnessy.She’s charged with ensuring the vaccine is securely handled and properly prepped before it’s injected.“We don't want to risk wasting any of the drugs,” she said. “The stuff is liquid gold right now.”That liquid gold must be stored at 80 below zero, in a secure location that only a few pharmacists have access to.“We have to take it out of the ultra-low freezer and move it to a refrigerator just to thaw for three hours.”Once thawed, it cannot be re-stored.“You can't put the medication back into the freezer,” said Shaughnessy. “Once inside, you have to use it or you're going to lose it. It's gonna have a five-day refrigerated expiration.”Pfizer’s vaccine protocol also requires the vaccine to be protected from UV light and the dilution must be gently inverted exactly 10 times. Shaken too hard, says Shaughnessy, and it could go bad.“It's very, very specific," she explained.That’s when the clock starts ticking.“Once they're thawed and reconstituted, basically diluted down to make the actual doses, then that's when we have six hours on the clock going from that dilution point into someone's arm,” said Luke Hvass, a clinical pharmacist at Rush.Each dose is recorded and logged. It’s a symphony of procedures that must come together like clockwork.“It's a lift for a lot of hospitals, a lot of organizations, but I think it's a challenge everybody is ready to rise to because everyone is so excited about getting this vaccine process started,” said Shaughnessy.The Department of Health and Human Services has expanded the scope of who can act as vaccinators. CAMPO (CNS) - One person was killed today in a traffic crash involving an overturned semi-truck on State Route 94, the CHP said.The fatal crash happened at 12:06 p.m. Saturday when a semi-truck was reported on its side in the right shoulder of SR-94 west of Buckman Springs Road with no other vehicles involved, according to a California Highway Patrol incident log.Caltrans San Diego said all lanes of eastbound and westbound SR-94 were blocked and asked travelers to use an alternate route. The CHP said the freeway would probably be closed for a couple of hours while investigators look into the cause of the crash.No further information was available. 663

Cardi B and her sister Hennessy Carolina are facing a defamation lawsuit after the rapper posted a video on social media accusing a group of Long Island beachgoers of being racists.The video was taken on Sept. 6 at Smith Point Beach in Suffolk County, according to the plaintiffs' attorney. It shows Carolina and her girlfriend, Michelle Diaz, involved in an expletive-filled spat with three people who are supporters of President Donald Trump.Cardi B shared the video with her massive social media following and accused the group of being racists who attacked her sister and Diaz.Now, the people on the other end of the video are suing the rapper for defamation, claiming Cardi and company attacked them.Attorney John Ray, who represents the plaintiffs, said his clients were enjoying a beach day with their families when Carolina came running up the beach toward them.“Hennessy Carolina suddenly approached them, raging, spitting, insulting, assaulting, defaming and threatening them, all the while videotaping them, because one of them wore a MAGA hat,” Ray said in a statement. “Then Hennessy, Cardi B and celebrity model Michelle Diaz deviously edited the videotape and published the edited version all over social media, across the world for all to see, and maliciously falsely labeled these residents and their families as ‘N…s’ and as racists.”The video was posted by Cardi B several weeks ago during a heated social media war between the rapper and conservative media personality Candice Owens.In the caption she posted along with the video, Cardi B said her sister and Diaz were being harassed because they are “an Afro/Hispanic gay couple.”However, the beachgoers painted a different picture of the incident during a news conference Tuesday detailing the lawsuit.Peter and Pauline Caliendo, of Moriches, and Manuel Alarcon, of Middle Island, said Carolina got in their faces, cursed and threatened them repeatedly after they asked Diaz to move a vehicle that was blocking other cars.Peter Caliendo and Alarcon said the video affected their careers, and Pauline Caliendo said she has had to defend herself to her family and friends.While the Caliendos had a Trump flag on their beach tent and Alarcon had a Make America Great Again hat on, all three insisted they are not racist or homophobic and that the incident had nothing to do with the president or race.“Anyone who knows us knows we’re not racist or homophobes,” Peter Caliendo said.Police were called to the scene, according to Ray, but the women had left before officers arrived on the scene. (KGTV) -- Four wild mice collected during routine monitoring in the Campo area have tested positive for hantavirus, county health officials say.The mice, that were collected in open space in Campo, included two California mice, one deer mouse, and one brush mouse.The mice brought the total number of rodents that have tested positive for the virus so far this year around the county to 22.Health officials say people are unlikely to be exposed to the virus because rodents generally want to live and nest away from people.The county is also reminding residents that they should never sweep or vacuum up after rodents if they find them living in spaces like homes, sheds, or garages. Instead, people are encouraged to use “wet-cleaning” methods.People are exposed to hantavirus when the urine, feces, and saliva dries and is stirred into the air and inhaled.There is no cure or vaccine for the virus and it is potentially deadly, the county says.See tips from the county below on how to use wet-cleaning methods:Avoid Exposure to Hantavirus· Seal up all external holes in homes, garages and sheds larger than a dime to keep rodents from getting in.· Eliminate rodent infestations immediately.· Avoid rodent-infested areas and do not stir up dust or materials that may be contaminated with rodent droppings and urine.· Clean up rodent droppings and urine using the wet cleaning method described below.Use “Wet-cleaning” Methods to Prevent Inhaling the Virus· Do not sweep or vacuum infested areas.· Ventilate affected area by opening doors and windows for at least 30 minutes.· Use rubber gloves.
