The good news is Americans are getting COVID-19 test results back, on average, a day faster than they were over the summer. The troubling news, according to experts, is that it is still taking three days on average for Americans to find out their COVID-19 status and this is not quick enough to help with contact tracing and quarantine efforts to slow the spread.Researchers from several universities, including Harvard, Northeastern, Northwestern and Rutgers universities, have been collecting data and conducting surveys for months since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.“Prompt test results constitute the foundation of a successful COVID-19 containment strategy,” researchers state at the beginning of their paper.Data now shows, of the participants who got a test for the coronavirus in late September, the average wait time was 2.7 days.In early August, the group announced their survey data showed the average wait time nationwide was 4.1 days. More than 30 percent of participants reported, at the time, they didn’t get test results back until four days or longer.The percentage of people getting results within 24 hours is also increasing; the September survey showed 37 percent of people getting results back in one day, compared to 23 percent over the summer.“Rapid turnaround of testing for COVID-19 infection is essential to containing the pandemic. Ideally, test results would be available the same day. Our findings indicate that the United States is not currently performing testing with nearly enough speed,” researchers said.Disparities still exist for Americans who are Black or Hispanic. Although wait times are shorter for these groups as well compared to summer numbers, they are still, on average, a day or more longer than white test takers.In the latest survey, Black Americans reported waiting an average of 4.4 days for results, and Hispanics reported waiting 4.1 days. By comparison, white and Asian Americans reported wait times of 3.5 and 3.6 days on average, respectively.Also troubling for trying to control the spread of the coronavirus, the data shows how many of those who tested positive had some sort of conversation about contact tracing.“Only 56% of respondents who received a positive COVID-19 test say that they were contacted for the purpose of contact tracing,” the survey found.The survey talked to more than 52,000 people across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. 2434

The defense rested its case Tuesday morning in the trial against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort without calling any witnesses, setting the stage for closing arguments Wednesday morning.Manafort spoke for the first time in court during the trial, saying he will not testify.Manafort told Judge T.S. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is cracking down on glasses and contact prescribers who may try to stop you from shopping around.The FTC sent warning letters to almost 30 different eyeglass prescribers. The letters say the prescriber must give a copy of the prescription to the patient without them asking.They can't charge a special fee for doing that and they can’t force you to buy from them just because they did the examination.“However, there were a lot of prescribers that just weren't doing that,” said Linda Sherry, Director of National Priorities at Consumer Action. “If you asked for it, in most cases, you would get it. They also are required to post notices in the offices to say that you have a right to your prescription and a lot of prescribers we're not posting those notices.”Consumer Action is educating people on their eyeglass and contacts prescription rights. Sherry says prescriptions allow you to go online and to other eyeglass and contact sellers to shop for the best deal.Another thing she says to ask for, especially if you're shopping online, is pupil distance. It may not be on the prescription.“I had an experience where I asked for the pupil distance and was told that would be to put the pupil distance on, so I was like, ‘I've been coming here for three years and you've obviously measured my pupil distance, because I bought glasses from you. So, all you have to do is open your records and tell me my pupil distance.’ And they did do it, but there was that moment there when she said for the pupil distance measurement when I thought, ‘oh, something's very, very wrong here.’”Prescribers shouldn't be charging for that info either.If you're having trouble getting prescription information from your provider, you can contact the FTC. The funeral for Rayshard Brooks — an Atlanta man who was killed during an altercation with police earlier this month — took place Tuesday in a church with connections to the Civil Rights movement.Brooks' funeral was held at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta — the same church where Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. served as a co-pastor between 1960 and 1968.Dr. Bernice King, one of Martin Luther King's daughters, spoke during Brooks' funeral.Actor, writer and producer Tyler Perry provided the funds for Brooks' funeral. The funeral comes after an hours-long public viewing on Monday afternoon.Brooks was shot and killed in a Wendy's parking lot by former Atlanta Police Officer Garrett Rolfe on June 12. Rolfe's partner, Officer Devin Brosnan, first encountered Brooks after Brooks had fallen asleep in his car while waiting in the restaurant's drive-thru line.Rolfe arrived on the scene a few moments later. The officers subjected Brooks to a field sobriety test, which he failed. He later offered to lock his car and walk home, but Brosnan and Rolfe told Brooks they would be taking him into custody.As the officers attempted to handcuff Brooks, a struggle ensued. Brooks was able to grab Brosnan's stun gun and attempted to flee the scene. As he fled, Brooks appeared to point the stun gun in the direction of the police. That's when Rolfe shot Brooks in the back. Brooks later died in surgery at a local hospital.Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard says Rolfe kicked Brooks after shooting him but before calling for emergency medical help. He also alleged that Brosnan stood on Brooks' shoulder. Both face charges in connection with Brooks' death, with Rolfe facing murder charges. 1701
