ODESSA, Fla. — A couple from Florida that specializes in Christmas art worried many children wouldn't get to visit Santa this year, so they got creative to keep the tradition alive.Larry Hersberger always had a love for the man who makes a list and checks it twice."Christmas has always been special to me since I was a boy. I was raised in the prairies," said Hersberger.Hersberger's wife, Ela Bednarek, always adored a beautifully decorated Evergreen."I grew up in Poland, and in Poland, Christmas is the biggest holiday there is," said Bednarek.Together they are creating an empire of Christmas themed oil paintings."And it all stemmed to my own inner child and how he pictured Santa," said Hersberger. The big guy at the North Pole started to take notice."Next thing you know, I'm being friended by hundreds of Santas on Facebook," said Hersberger. "I realized that all of them had my work somewhere in their homes."When the pandemic began to threaten Santa's busy season, the couple started to worry."Because they make their entire year's income in the last three months of the year, and gone," said Hersberger. Then they started thinking about the kids."We have a 5-year-old and I was like, 'wait a minute, I can't take Juliet to see Santa this year,'" said Bednarek. "I said 'Larry, you're the Santa guy, you got to save Christmas.'"So with the help of their bearded friends, the couple put together a network of 100 professional Santas from five different countries and called it How To Save Christmas. How To Save Christmas "Macy's Santa, Disney's Santa, Mall of America Santa, these are the whos who of Santas," said Hersberger.Families around the world can schedule a Zoom call with the Jolly Old St. Nick of their choice. Every Santa is unique, and every call is different. There are no green screens and disappearing heads. According to Hersberger, every Santa is in a real live set. At the end of the call, the child's photo will be dropped right next to him, like they were actually there in the workshop."We are on a mission to bring joy and hope to those families around the world, not only the children but families," said Bednarek. How To Save Christmas will also be offering 500 free Zoom calls to children in hospitals. They are looking for sponsors to help provide even more.Click here for pricing information and to make your own Zoom call with Santa. This article was written by Robert Boyd for WFTS. 2474

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday the state's formula that will determine which school districts can reopen to students in September. The formula will be implemented between August 1 and August 7, based on COVID-19 data in each region. Schools in regions in Phase Four of their reopening at that time will be able to reopen to students if the region's daily infection rate remains 5% or lower over a 14-day average. After August 1, schools will close if their regional infection rate is greater than 9% over a seven-day average.Once reopening, schools must follow guidelines specific to their districts. The New York State Health Department has released its own guidelines, which will be used by districts to develop plans. The health department's guidelines include masks and PPE whenever students or staff cannot maintain social distancing (six feet of separation). It also includes guidelines on cleaning, screening, tracing, transportation and food service. You can read the guidelines here: Recovering, rebuilding, and renewing the spirit of our schools school reopening guidance from Adam Francis WKBW's Megan Erbacher first reported this story. 1182

CHICAGO, Ill. – The fight against domestic violence has found a new warrior in a surprising place – the hair salon. And now, more and more states are looking to stylists to spot the signs of victimization. For Joan Rowan, who has been in the salon business for 44 years, the bond between hair stylist and client is strong. “It's a very intimate relationship,” said Rowan. Over the years, she says she’s heard the intimations many times before. “’He'd kill me if he knew how much money I spent. No, you can't cut my hair too short. My husband doesn't like it.’ Those kinds of answers. Suddenly you're asking them like are you OK?” It’s those in-chair conversations that drove her 20 years ago to start training her own staff to recognize the signs of domestic abuse. “They all knew stories and heard it all before. They had had clients who came bruised or hair missing,” said Rowan. Many clients she said appeared sad or afraid. In 2017, Illinois became the first state to require all cosmetologists and salon professionals to complete a one-hour, one-time education course on how to spot the signs of domestic violence and sexual assault. They look for evidence of physical abuse like bruises and cuts or outward behaviors like self-blame, sudden lifestyle changes, and irregular appointments. The law, which went into effect this year, impacted more than 84,000 licensed cosmetologists and estheticians in the state. “We are not trained as reporters or anything like that,” explained Rowan. “All we do is give them a phone number that they can call if they need help.” According to the Professional Beauty Association, Illinois, Arkansas and California, have already passed laws mandating domestic abuse training for cosmetology school students or current salon professionals. Since last year, another six including, Florida, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Texas, have attempted to pass similar legislation. For salon owner Susanne Post, it’s personal. “Part of my story is that I’m a survivor of domestic violence myself,” said Post. Two years ago, she helped create a domestic violence training program for Nashville stylists. She says she’s hopeful that her home state of Tennessee will pass a law similar to other states. "In Tennessee, we are the fifth in the nation at the rate that women are killed by men, which is just unbelievable,” she said. “It affects one in four women, and one in seven men.” Joan Rowan says she’s proud to have been part of genesis of the training and the laws that are now spreading to help protect both men and women. “It has saved lives,” Rowan said. “It's real. And it doesn't have to be. And we can all help people get out of trouble.” 2725

Days after a dad was caught on camera being shot as he shielded his children from gunfire at Bronx car dealership, a family friend says he has lost his job.An innocent bystander, 39-year-old Anthony Jefferson was struck in the right thigh when the shooting erupted Monday, officials said.On a GoFundMe campaign page started Thursday by close friend Serena Wingate, she wrote that Jefferson had lost his job due to the injury and also has to have surgery to remove the bullet.Jefferson's wife, Danica Jefferson, told TMZ that the injury left him temporarily unable to walk. This has resulted in the heroic dad being fired from both of his two jobs as a construction worker and head painter at a maintenance company, TMZ reported.Wingate said she set up the GoFundMe to help the dad with medical bills and help his kids with therapy after the traumatic experience.According the family friend, the father and his three kids were at the dealership shopping for a new vehicle to surprise his wife for her birthday. That's when shots rang out inside the Boston Road business. Three men opened fire on another man, who fired several rounds back, police said.Surveillance video shows the dad diving and huddling over the kids on the floor behind a couch. Glass windows shattered as gunmen fired from between cars.None of the children were injured, police said. The NYPD is still trying to identify the men seen opening fire in the video.Submit tips to police by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), visiting www.nypdcrimestoppers.com, downloading the NYPD Crime Stoppers mobile app, or texting 274637 (CRIMES) then entering TIP577.
