SAN DIEGO — A growing number of restaurants in San Diego want to wall off the parking spots outside their front doors and replace them with tables. The concept is called a Parklet, and the city of San Diego appears to be ready to embrace it - at least until social distancing mandates lift. "It's San Diego. We're getting the most beautiful weather of the year. Let us have some seats out there. Let us have some tables," said Merritte Powell, who owns La Puerta restaurant on 4th Avenue. Powell is readying an application to the city that would allow him to build on a curbside section of the street in front of his restaurant and put more seating. He says it's key to survive amid social distancing restrictions, which have limited his capacity. In fact, La Puerta even with hourlong waits still only pulls in 50 percent of the revenue it would have made before the Coronavirus outbreak. On bad days, revenue drops by as much as 70 percent. "Because of the way the seating is, because of the social distancing, stuff like that, I'm nowhere near where I need to be," Powell said. On July 7, the City Council will consider an urgency ordinance that would waive some fees for Parklets and help streamline their construction. Restaurants from downtown, Little Italy and North Park are all readying applications. The opportunity could help level the playing field for restaurants on streets that cannot be closed to vehicle traffic for on-street dining. The city has already permitted road closures on 5th Avenue and India Street for restaurants to expand. A stretch of North Park could be next. The urgency ordinance would last until social distancing restrictions expire or are lifted. 1693

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Joc Pederson's second home run of the game sailed an estimated 435 feet through two palm trees just beyond the center field fence at Petco Park, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 7-6 to take two of three in an early series between NL West rivals.Pederson drove in five runs on the two homers for the seven-time defending division champion Dodgers, who won seven of nine on a three-city trip.Pederson hit a two-run homer off Garrett Richards in the second inning and then welcomed rookie Luis Pati?o to the big leagues with his monster three-run shot in the sixth.Down 7-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Fernando Tatis Jr. blasted a deep two-run homer to trim the LA lead to 7-4.In the eighth, San Diego added another run on Wil Myers’ fourth home run of the year. The Padres picked up a run off Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen in the bottom of the ninth to close the gap to 7-6, and with runners at the corners and one out, Manny Machado had a chance to tie or win the game. The third baseman hit a fly ball to left that was caught by Chris Taylor for the second out, and the left fielder’s throw to the plate was perfect to nail a tagging Trent Grisham for the final out of the game. 1222

SAN CARLOS, Calif. (KGTV) -- A grandmother and several children were forced to run out of a San Carlos home that burst into flames Saturday night. The fire broke out on Park Ridge Boulevard in San Carlos around 10 p.m. Saturday. Fire crews were able to stop the flames from spreading to a nearby canyon. Neighbors say they heard what sounded like explosions before they ran out and saw the home on fire. A woman was home watching her grandchildren when the house caught fire. All those inside were able to make it out safely. San Diego Fire-Rescue says it was initially challenging to battle the flames because the closest hydrants are located hundreds of feet away. “I went across the street and pounded on the door and the window to make sure that nobody was in there. Don’t think they were. There was just a lot of explosions and tires I guess blowing up. It was just In full flames when it happened,” one neighbor said. At this time, it’s unclear what caused the fire. 981

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Three solo home runs were enough to power the San Diego Padres past the Miami Marlins.Franmil Reyes, Hunter Renfroe and Ian Kinsler homered, and left-hander Joey Lucchesi combined with two relievers on a four-hitter for his first victory in six starts to lead the San Diego Padres to a 5-2 victory Friday night."We thrive with the long ball and we've got the guys who can hit them," manager Andy Green said. "You have to embrace who you are. We've got a lot of slug as a club. It's nice when you get guys on base and hit two- and three-run homers, but solos did it today."Lucchesi certainly enjoyed the power display."I love it. I love when guys hit them," the big lefty said. "It makes them feel good, it makes us feel good. It's great."Lucchesi (4-3) hadn't won since beating Cincinnati at home on April 21. He retired his first seven batters before allowing a double by Miguel Rojas in the third. He then retired eight straight before allowing a home run by pinch-hitter Rosell Herrera with one out in the sixth. Lucchesi struck out five and walked one.Craig Stammen pitched 1 2/3 hitless innings, Phil Maton allowed two singles to open the Marlins' ninth and Kirby Yates came on to get the final three outs for his 22nd save, best in the majors.Herrera was pinch-hitting for lefty Caleb Smith (3-3), who lost his third straight decision after allowing two runs and three hits in five innings. He struck out eight and walked two."I thought he threw the ball really well," manager Don Mattingly said. "Gives up the two solos, but I think we saw the finish that we talked about before, more swing and miss. Definitely a lot better out of Caleb tonight."The Padres "don't really chase too far out of the zone," Mattingly said. "They've got swing and miss but they don't chase all over the place, so there were a lot of deep counts and you've got to make pitches, so we know they're dangerous from that standpoint."Reyes homered on a line shot to left with one out in the first, his 16th. Renfroe hit a moonshot into the second balcony on the Western Metal Supply Co. Building in the left-field corner with one out in the fourth for his 15th."I felt like my stuff was pretty good," Smith said. "Just made a couple mistakes and I've got to stop giving up the long ball."Kinsler homered off Austin Brice with one out in the seventh for his seventh. 2370
