BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), China's economic planner and price regulator, said Friday it has asked local governments to crack down on some gas stations selling diesel above the state-set prices.NDRC investigators found some gas stations have been selling diesel above state-set prices in the provinces of Sichuan, Hubei, Henan, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Liaoning, Jiangxi and Shanxi and Chongqing Municipality.The NDRC has requested local governments to punish the offending gas stations.The stations were ordered to stop overcharging and turn over illegal incomes to authorities, according to a statement on the NDRC web-site.Also, the stations would receive punitive fines, it said.Among the violators, Yueyuan gas station in Xichang, Sichuan Province, sold No. 0 diesel for 9 yuan (1.35 U.S. dollars) per liter, as against the state-set 6.55 yuan.The NDRC said that consumers can call 12358 to complain about diesel overpricing and the price regulators will respond quickly.The latest measures were adopted in the wake of those publicized Tuesday, which were aimed to stop some refiners and diesel wholesalers from overcharging.An unprecedented diesel shortage has hit China's cities and markets, leading some wholesalers and gas stations to sell diesel above the state-set prices.Due to the diesel shortage, some enterprises suspended production and express deliveries turned into "snail deliveries."People found that it took much longer for buses to arrive and even some crematories found it hard to get enough diesel for cremations."We can't find enough diesel. Ten of the trucks in our company can't go out to deliver cargo. Our businesses are affected," said Du Zhanhai, head of a freight transportation company in Tangshan, north China's Hebei Province.The deadline for China's planned reduction in energy consumption is approaching. The country announced that it would reduce energy consumption by 20 percent per GDP unit during the 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-2010).

LAS VEGAS, the United States, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- China is incredibly important to the success of the global consumer electronics industry, Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) told Xinhua in an interview."There is no doubt that China is a growing powerhouse. China is a global leader in manufacturing and the 'made in China' phrase is known around the world. Chinese manufacturing facilities provide jobs and spur growth not just in China, but around the world as more international companies explore doing business in China," Shapiro said during the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which was organized by CEA.The 2011 International CES kicked off here on Thursday with more than 2,700 exhibitors unveiling their latest technology innovations, up from the 2010 CES which featured 2,500 exhibitors. A total of 267 exhibitors from China, including major companies such as Haier and Hisense, will display their products at the show.According to CEA and market research company Gfk research, China is expected to contribute 13 percent of global CE retail revenue in 2010, up from 12 percent in 2009."The Chinese consumer technology market is also critical to the success of the International CES," Shapiro said. "China also ranked 3rd in terms of international attendance at the 2010 CES, with 1,105 Chinese industry professionals."However, while a leader in manufacturing, to become a true world leader China must produce innovative companies with brands that are recognized around the world, Shapiro cautioned."In fact, not one Chinese company is included on the Interbrand annual listing of the top 100 global brands. In order for China to truly compete on a global scale, it must change its outlook on the importance of branding."In recent years, many Chinese companies have come far in building their brands. Haier and Hisense are well-known around the globe. In fact, Hisense's Chairman Zhou Houjian delivered a keynote address at the 2010 CES, marking the first time a Chinese company has keynoted at the International CES."For Chinese companies looking to build their brand, there is no better forum to launch an innovative product than a tradeshow such as the International CES, which is the largest branding event in the world," Shapiro said.Shapiro was also optimistic with the prospect of the consumer electronics industry.After a down year in 2009, the consumer electronics industry grew 13 percent last year and is expected to grow an additional 10 percent this year to 964 billion dollars, thanks in large part to demand for smartphones and notebook computers, the CEA forecast. The group expects electronics sales to grow in all major markets around the world but to be especially strong in Western Europe, North America and China."Due to the economic downturn, consumers around the world have been cautious in their purchase patterns. However, CEA research finds that individuals view consumer electronics products as necessities rather than luxury goods, reinforcing the strength of our industry even in a down economy," he said.CEA is a U.S. trade association promoting growth in the consumer technology industry. It represents more than 2,000 corporate members involved in the design, development, manufacturing, distribution and integration of consumer electronics products. As a U.S.-based trade association, all CEA members must have offices in the United States, however CEA also has 40 associate member companies based in China.

BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's anti-graft authorities announced on Monday in a statement that during the year it had found 21.5 billion yuan (3.24 billion U.S.Dollar) of public money held in unauthorized departmental coffers.The probe was led by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China.The probe had put government agencies, public institutions, social groups, state-owned and state holding enterprises under scrutiny, and had uncovered 45,593 cases of public money being held in unauthorized departmental coffers, involving a total of 21.5 billion yuan.A total of 2,669 officials involved in these cases have been punished, also according to the statement.

BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- A senior official from China's Ministry of Commerce called for enhanced trade and economic cooperation between China and the European Union (EU), prior to Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang's upcoming visit to three EU nations.In a recent interview with the People's Daily, Ministry of Commerce International Trade Representative Gao Hucheng reviewed the current trade and economic relationship between China and the EU, pinpointing the areas where more efforts could be made on both sides to further cooperation.In an article published in Wednesday's People's Daily, Gao said that in the past 35 years since China and the EU forged diplomatic ties, the relations between the two sides went from "constructive partnership" to "comprehensive partnership" and the now "comprehensive strategic partnership."The article was published about a week before Vice Premier Li sets out to visit Spain, Germany and Britain on Jan. 4-12.Trade between China and the European Union has become one of the most active and influential bilateral relations in the world, said Gao.Leaders of China and the European Union have been exchanging official visits frequently, said he. This year alone, seven of top Chinese leaders, including President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao, paid official visits to over a dozen EU countries.Meanwhile, some 65 high-level delegations from the EU and its member states visited China in 2010.Trade cooperation between China and the EU has been speeding up, Gao said. When China established diplomatic relations with the EU in 1975, annual trade was at 2.4 billion U.S. dollars, the volume of about two days between two sides this year. In the past 35 years, trade volume has grown over 150 times.According to China's statistics, China-EU trade amounted to 433.9 billion U.S. dollars in the first 11 months of this year, up 33.1 percent from last year, a growth rate higher than that of China-Japan and China-U.S. trade.According to statistics released by the EU, its exports to China rose 4 percent in 2009 despite the economic recession and decreased export to the rest of the world. EU's total investment in China has exceeded 70 billion U.S. dollars so far, making the EU China's third largest source of foreign investment.Communication between people on two sides has grown substantially over the years. Nowadays nearly 200,000 Chinese students are studying in the EU countries and some 150,000 EU nationals are working in China. HONG KONG, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang said on Saturday the government will not slack off in its fight against drugs, despite a 20 percent drop in the number of drug abusers aged below 21 in the first half of this year.Speaking at the 2010 Fight Crime Conference, Tsang said both the government and the community attach great importance to drug problems.Although the government's efforts in beating drugs have started to deliver results, it will not slack off and will continue to allocate money to anti-drug programs, he said.Praising law-enforcement officers' professionalism in maintaining law and order in Hong Kong, Tsang said the city's crime rate continued to stay at a low level.According to Chief Secretary Henry Tang, Hong Kong's crime situation for the year's first 10 months remained stable, with overall crime dropping 3.2 percent.
