SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)— Many residents in San Diego County woke up to a big mess after yesterday’s storms brought in the steady rain. Many people witnessed an early morning recovery mission in San Diego Bay Sunday. A 30-foot boat was found partially underwater at La Playa Cove near Shelter Island. San Diego Harbor Police believed no one was inside. But, a friend of the boat owner thought last night’s weather and rough waters might be the reasons it sank.“They may have come in last night during the storm and coming in, the boat sank on them,” friend of the boat owner, Jeff Gough said. Meanwhile, in North County, a large pine tree toppled down onto Eldorado Drive in Escondido.“There was room for like one car width for people to go around it,” homeowner Richard Bensinger said. Bensinger remembered when he planted what was a tiny Christmas tree in his front lawn 15 years ago. It has since grown to be more than 30 feet tall. Bensinger was shocked it came down this morning. He knows now, not to underestimate the power of mother nature.“It was angled a bit, but the roots were spread all over the place. So I'm surprised it actually fell over, but it’s just been so wet and muddy out there, and as you can see, all that mud pulled the whole thing over,” Bensinger said. He now has to live with a pile of pine chunks on his front lawn until county crews come to pick them up. Still, he is relieved no one was hurt.“I’m glad it didn’t fall onto somebody as they were falling down the street,” Bensinger said. The next storm is headed to San Diego County on Wednesday. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The family of Crystal Odom filled a San Diego courtroom Monday morning to hear a judge sentence the man convicted of killing Odom in a drive-by shooting in 1995. The judge sentenced Aswad Walker to 15 years to life for Odom's murder, plus three years for gang ties. He was convicted of second-degree murder back in February for Odom's death. Two previous trials had ended in hung juries. Odom's parents spoke before the sentencing. Her mother called Walker a coward and told him he would get what he deserved in prison. When Odom's father, James Odom, spoke, the family became very emotional, tears and sobs could be heard throughout the courtroom. Odom said a burden was lifted off his shoulders and that the sentencing marked an end to a long ordeal. At the time of the shooting, Crystal was with her then boyfriend and her 10-month-old daughter. Her daughter and boyfriend were unhurt. 959

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Street racing could return to SDCCU Stadium, after just a couple month's hiatus.RaceLegal, a non-profit that has run drag races in the stadium parking lot for 21 years, says they have new leadership and new funding. They hope to resume racing soon.But, organizers say they're having trouble getting permission from the City of San Diego to use the venue."This is really important for the community," says Lydia Denecochea, RaceLegal's Executive Director. "It saves lives."RaceLegal started in the late 1990s as a response to a rash of street racing crashes and deaths. Denecochea says giving people a safe, controlled environment to race has made the roads safer across the city."It's a human characteristic that we are competitive, and many of us love speed. It'll never go away," she says.The non-profit group joined forces with city leaders, the San Diego Police Department and the San Diego Sheriff to give drivers an alternative. People could even volunteer at events to satisfy community service requirements from traffic tickets.The number of deaths from street racing fell from 16 in 2000 to just two in 2018. Injuries also saw a drastic drop-off in the same time frame, from 39 to only one."It works," says Denecochea. "In 2000, we had carnage on our roads."But a lack of funding led the non-profit to close in early 2019. A message on their website told supporters that the budget deficit, "renders the program not viable to continue service to our community."RELATED: RaceLegal stops drag races after more than two decades in Mission ValleyThey held what many thought would be their final race on March 1.Since then, interest from a private investor has Denecochea looking into holding more races. She's now asking supporters to send a letter to the Mayor's office and to other city leaders urging them to let RaceLegal use SDCCU Stadium again.A spokesperson from the city told 10News they're looking into the issue. In a statement, they said, "The City is in communication with RaceLegal on the potential resumption of legal racing at the stadium. However, concurrently the City is in discussions with other race producers to ensure that legal racing at the stadium continues to provide a safe option for the San Diego community."Councilmember Scott Sherman's office says they've also been in touch with RaceLegal and with the stadium to resolve the issue.One potential roadblock is the pending sale of SDCCU Stadium and the land around it to San Diego State University. In November, voters passed Measure G, which authorized the deal to create an SDSU West campus and build a new stadium for the Aztec football program.Denecochea says she wants the city to let RaceLegal keep racing until construction starts. Now, posts with the tag #IAmVanessaGuillen are circulating online, as people share their own stories of sexual assault in the military.Billiekai Boughton with the San Diego Women Veterans Network said any conversation like this can bring up hard memories for female veterans. She said while many women have a positive experience in the military, four out of five females report harassment or assault. The goal of her group is to support women through any of this pain. She says this is important in a community like San Diego which has about 26,000 female veterans.“For those of us who have been in the military and have had negative experiences, this can be a memory (sic) of feeling unsafe,” said Boughton.The group’s website says the most common request of women veterans in San Diego is to meet other women veterans. Their primary goal is to create a community for female military veterans, while also encouraging community service and policy change, which encourages and embraces the positive traits female vets have to offer.“Our friends remind us how strong we are. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- With the increase in park usage since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, San Diego Park Rangers are noticing a slight increase in vandalism at city parks and trails.On a scale of one to ten, hiking up Cowles Mountain was a bit of a challenge."For me, an eight," six-year-old Joaquin Santaruse said.He, his brother, and two buddies zig-zagged up San Diego's highest peak Wednesday to get away."It's fun to be in nature sometimes," older brother Mateo Santaruse said. "It's a great view up there, and there's a bunch of cool rocks, and in fact, we found a pink one."Many people have noticed and posted about an uptick in graffiti at parks and trails across the nation. Zion National Park published a post on their Facebook page, showcasing the recent vandalism incidents. In it, they are pleaded with people not to disrupt nature during their visit."We just saw that it was painted all pink, and we were like, 'Wow, look at that rock!'" Mateo said.But that awe turned into a little disappointment for the young boys."The chemicals in the spray paint," friend Aaron Heredia said."The animals can try to lick on it and stuff, and then it's toxic," Mateo followed.Tim Graham with the city of San Diego, says graffiti has both environmental and financial impacts. He sent ABC 10News a statement reading,"Because of the location and size of some of the rocks, park rangers are unable to remove the rocks or the paint safely. The City is looking into contracting with a qualified vendor that can safely remove and capture the paint from the rocks."This, unfortunately, becomes an unnecessary expense for taxpayers.
