SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several San Diego events this week will resume as planned in the face of the county's increased precautions surrounding the coronavirus.County leaders cautioned the public Thursday to practice common-sense actions to protect themselves from not only coronavirus but the current flu season as well, as several large-scale events are set to headline the weekend. This week, other major events in the U.S. were outright canceled over coronavirus concerns, including South by Southwest spring festival in Austin and Miami's Calle Ocho and Ultra music festivals. Locally at Pechanga Arena, concerts featuring country music star Blake Shelton and rockers Tame Impala will bookend San Diego Sockers and Seals games, drawing thousands to the arena over the weekend.RELATED: San Diego County officials urge coronavirus preparednessIn a statement to 10News, Pechanga Arena said they are aware of the latest COVID-19 developments and will continue to follow CDC protocol."Pechanga Arena San Diego and parent company ASM Global are closely monitoring the latest developments regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19) globally and any potential impact it may have on our day-to-day operations. The health and safety of our guests and employees is our top priority," a Pechanga Arena spokesperson said. "Through public health organizations such as the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) we are staying abreast of the latest updates and developments as they occur. Any actions we take will be consistent with guidelines from these agencies and local health department officials."The CDC's interim Coronavirus guidelines for mass gathering organizers include:Create emergency plans nowPromote preventative actions for staff and guestsMake extra hand-sanitizers and tissues availableDevelop a flexible refund scheduleSaturday's 12th Annual San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering (SD Science Expo) at Petco Park will have two hand-washing and two hand-sanitizing stations at each entrance. They will also install multiple hand sanitizer stations throughout the park. In addition, they will have exhibitors handing our coronavirus fact sheets. The 2020 Mariachi Festival at the Chula Vista Bayfront expects more than 12,000 visitors on Sunday. They too are adding hand sanitizing stations and urging their vendors to practice good hygiene."We told all our vendors to be more cautious about being more clean when handling the food," Alejandra Arrendondo, Marketing Coordinator of the National City Chamber of Commerce, said. The CRSSD Festival is set to host a sold-out crowd at Waterfront Park for two days of electronic music performances. Attendees can expect more hand sanitizing stations throughout the festival and cashless payment options to avoid physically exchanging money."CRSSD will be adding additional hand sanitizing stations at the entrance and throughout the venue. CRSSD is also offering a cashless payment system for patrons," a spokesperson told 10News.RELATED: Miami cancels two music festivals scheduled for later this month amid fears of the coronavirusIn a reverse from this weekend's events, the 2020 CIE Summit business technology conference has been rescheduled from March 18-20 to Aug. 12-14 at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, organizers say. Meanwhile, California's tourism wing, "Visit California," is advising all travelers that the state is safe for visiting and any recreation, despite Gov. Gavin Newsom's emergency declaration this week."The emergency declaration in California indicates our Governor’s proactive and quick response and commitment to preparedness. Fortunately, there are no further travel implications, and visitors should feel safe and welcome to travel the state freely, maintaining the same standard precautions they would at home," a Visit California statement read.Whether San Diegans are attending a large or small gathering, the county suggests residents find ways to minimize physical contact. Leaders have discouraged high fives and hand shaking and suggested elbow or fist bumps. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several San Diegans are celebrating after catching a more than 300 pound Tuna off the San Diego Coast. The biggest catch, a 321 bluefin tuna, was caught by San Diego local Andy Khwa and Robbie Ortiz from Santa Barbara. The massive catch happened during a three-day trip aboard the Aztec Sportfishing’s Aztec vessel. RELATED: Giant tuna caught off coast of San Diego"This was hands down the best fishing we’ve ever seen on the Aztec. We were on a 3 Day trip with 24 passengers and caught over 400 bluefin and Yellowfin. Our standouts were 321 pound, 298 pound, and 292 pound Bluefin tuna,” Captain Greg Gawitt said.“We broke our personal record of a 311 pound bluefin in 2017. The smile on our passengers faces was priceless! We are headed back out this morning and can’t wait to do it again."This isn’t the first time fishermen aboard the vessel made a record-breaking catch. In October of 2017, the crew pulled up a Pacific Bluefin tuna that weighed 310 pounds. 990

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Shipping companies expect another record setting holiday season, which gives would be thieves ample chances to steal packages off of porches. This year, FedEx expects to ship 400 million packages during the holiday season. UPS says they'll deliver 750 million. The U.S. Postal Service estimates 850 million packages and 15 billion pieces of mail altogether, and Amazon says in 2016 they sent more than a billion items world wide through Prime. But this year, more companies have ways for you to protect your deliveries.Ring doorbells are becoming popular. They have motion-sensing cameras that connect to your smartphone, alerting users to see anyone that comes to the door. Their Facebook page is full of videos where owners scared off would-be thieves with an alarm or by shouting through a connected microphone. The company is also encouraging people to download their app. Even if you don't have a Ring Doorbell, the app will send you alerts any time suspicious activity is reported in your neighborhood. Also new this holiday season is the Amazon Key, an option introduced this fall. For about 0, you can buy a starter kit that includes a camera and a special door lock. Delivery drivers would be able to put packages inside your home.Amazon also has lockers all around San Diego that packages can be sent to. You get a code to open them to pick up your package.Meanwhile, the US Postal Service says people who are worried about theft can ship packages using the "Hold for Pickup" option. Packages are kept at the post office to be picked up. You can also require a signature for delivery, or re-route a package to a different address while it's being delivered. They have more tips on how to protect holiday gifts here. 1776

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — She's just 5-years-old, but Faith Perkins is now a published author.Faith and her mother Neka wrote the book 'Faith and Trinity the Unicorn', inspired by the loss of Trinity, Faith's older sister."My husband and I lost Trinity prematurely at 24 weeks in May 2012, of course, that was a devastation, it hurt us, but our faith prompted us to try again, and that's when Faith was born," said Neka. In the book, Faith travels the world with her sister Trinity, who is a unicorn. Faith explains how she and her mother wrote the book together, "What we would do is me and her would sit down, and she would tell me what it would be like if we were playing with each other and whatever I would tell her she would write down on a piece of paper."Neka and Faith hope the book will help others coping with loss. "I hope to inspire so many other individuals to talk about it, it's not easy, it's painful," said Neka. But Neka says writing the book with Faith has helped her heal and find some closure. "I can only imagine what life would have been like with her here, so this allows us to keep the hope alive," said Neka. For Faith, getting the book published is only the beginning. She's using the proceeds to help the homeless, help kids with field trip expenses, and to donate gifts to local NICU’s.You can purchase the book at Barnes & Noble stores in San Diego, as well as on the Barnes & Noble website. The book is also available on Amazon Kindle. 1471

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University's Interfraternity Council voted this week to ban social gatherings on campus this fall. The Thursday night vote bans all IFC social events and requires that all IFC recruitment events be held virtually to curb the spread of COVID-19. IFC's social moratorium also prevents fraternities from hosting any formal or informal events at chapter facilities or in satellite houses."The fact of the matter is that COVID-19 is currently a very real concern in our SDSU community," Lee Abed, IFC president, said. “Because of this, we would like to ensure that our community sees COVID-19 have as little of an impact as possible. Therefore, out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to halt all social events effective immediately.”The ban only applies to IFC members and does not affect College Panhellenic Association, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, or the United Sorority and Fraternity Council. Any chapters that violate the guidelines will be referred to the IFC judicial board for review, the school says. With some exceptions, most of SDSU's courses will be held online this fall, though some students will still be living in on-campus housing or in the surrounding College Area during the semester. 1256
