BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has said that low-rent and affordable housing construction should be sped up to meet people's basic demands for living.The construction of public low-rent housing seeks to offer middle and low-income urban residents with adequate housing and affordable rents. BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- The State Administration of Civil Service Thursday announced a plan to select personnel for central government organizations from the grass-roots level.In all, 30 civil servants will be selected and assigned to 11 ministry-level organizations such as the ministries of foreign affairs, education, agriculture and culture.Civil servants working in government organizations in the province, city, county and village levels can apply for these posts.However, those at the provincial level will have to have two-years of grassroots work experience while village-level civil servants must have at least three-years of work experience.The written test and interview for the selection will be held in September.According to a statement released by the administration, the plan aims to create a system of cultivating civil servants from the frontline and grass-root levels for optimizing the structure of civil servants in central government departments.

BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Rising domestic iron ore production and slowing steel demand have hit some foreign miners and affected the global market, industry leaders said on Tuesday.China's iron ore imports dropped for the third straight month to 47.2 million tons in June, while spot prices have dropped to about 2 per ton after peaking at 5 per ton in April.The country's iron ore imports rose 4 percent year-on-year in the first half of this year, figures from the China Iron & Steel Association (CISA) showed. But domestic ore output increased by 28 percent year-on-year to 485 million tons in the same period, with output rising 37.6 percent in the second quarter from the first quarter."Rising domestic ore production is the main factor that drove down imports, largely impacting supply and demand on the global market," CISA vice-chairman Luo Bingsheng said.The figures form part of the bad news for international mining companies in Australia and Brazil that provide more than half of the ores to China.Iron ore imports from Australia, Brazil and India accounted for 62.3 percent of the country's total ore consumption last year.Brazilian company Vale already predicted in June that the share of imported ores in China would drop this year.About 40 percent of Chinese steel mills have to make cutbacks or put plants on maintenance, blaming increasing costs of imported ores and declining steel prices. Oversupply in the industry will continue to lower production, further driving down ore imports in the third quarter, Luo said.The CISA will also reduce the number of licensed iron ore importers to regulate the imported ore market."We will announce new rules for the industry soon, which include higher standards on the environment, energy consumption and capital requirement," Luo said.

BEIJING, June 29 (Xinhua) -- The quake zone of Yushu in northwest China has received donations valued at over 8.5 billion yuan (about 1.25 billion U.S. dollars) as of Monday, with about 90 percent being in cash and the remaining in relief materials, said the civil affairs ministry.The ministry said in a statement that it received 2.407 billion yuan while the Qinghai provincial government of the quake zone received nearly 2 billion yuan in donations, with the Red Cross Society of China and the China Charity Federation each raising about 2 billion yuan.About ten percent of the total donations had been allocated to quake relief work along with reconstruction and restoration, the statement said.Yushu was hit by a 7.1-magnitude quake on April 14, with more than 2,200 people being killed and thousands of homes flattened.Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said on June 20 that the government would soon implement a reconstruction plan for the area, which sets a goal to accomplish major reconstruction tasks within three years.
