SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A report from SANDAG Thursday showed that unemployment in San Diego County fell for the sixth straight week.San Diego County now has a 14.8% unemployment rate for the week ending June 20 -- that's down 1.5% from the previous week, and significantly lower than the peak of 25% on May 9."We're not out of the woods at all," warned SANDAG Chief Economist Ray Major. "This is still 50% higher than the highest unemployment we had during the great recession."Major said a 14.8% unemployment rate means 200,000 San Diegans are still out of work. According to the report, ZIP codes in Logan Heights, City Heights, Encanto, the College area, and San Ysidro are the hardest hit.Major told ABC 10News the looming threat of renewed restrictions on businesses may lead to another rise in unemployment."Many of these businesses have been waiting to open up again," said Major. "They haven't made any revenue for the last couple of months, they were open for about 19 days and now you're telling them they have to shut down again. Some of them are not going to be able to make it."Phil Blair, Chief Executive of Manpower Staffing, which helps companies find temporary employees, said he doesn't think unemployment will fall below 10% until the tourism industry recovers."We've got to open up airports, we've got to open up our convention center," Blair said. "And all of us have to be comfortable flying and then going into a big room with 8, 10, 12,000 people … Then we'll see (unemployment) at 13, 12 percent. And then once the virus dies down, I think within three months we'll be back within 5 or 6 percent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A neighbor says San Diego Police were called to the home of YouTube personality McSkillet, whose real name was Trevor Heitmann, the morning of the deadly freeway crash.According to the CHP, the 18-year-old was in his McLaren sports car when he drove south in the northbound lanes of the 805 freeway near Sorrento Valley Thursday just before 5 p.m. He collided head on with an SUV. Both cars burst into flames.Aileen Pizarro and her 12-year-old daughter Aryana were killed instantly. Heitmann also died following the crash.A neighbor, who didn't want to be identified, says she's known the family roughly 15 years,"He was a normal kid, we went to elementary school with him and everything was totally normal," the neighbor said. "He went off to La Jolla Country Day from then on I mainly saw him playing basketball with a couple of guys in the street, " she said.She said once Heitmann started getting into online video games, he stopped playing basketball outside.The neighbor said she saw police at the family's Carmel Valley home Thursday morning just hours before the fatal crash."There were probably three police cars, I would guess five officers and they were talking to his mother out in the driveway," she said.She also noticed an SUV blocking the family's driveway. Heitmann's McLaren sportscar was in the garage and the door was open."Now it makes sense. It was actually blocking the McLaren that was sitting inside the garage," she said.Later that afternoon, she said her husband heard a crash."He saw the McLaren zoom away and then it was a little while later that we had the news on and saw that there was a horrific accident," she said.Shortly after, she said she saw a CHP officer talking to Heitmann's dad.She says that's when she learned from the boy's father that the family had been worried about the 18-year-old's behavior."He told me five days earlier, that Trevor had just snapped, that was the word he used. He started making threats, or started saying he was driving at high speed, down the wrong side of the street and through red lights and he said that's what prompted him to come to San Diego," said the neighbor, who added that the boy's parents were divorced and his dad lived in Colorado.She said the teenager's dad also shared with her that his son hit the SUV that was blocking the driveway and nearly hit him."He said he almost hit me. This was him going back to the context of saying he had just snapped. And I said, 'you mean hit you as a person,' and he said, 'yeah I was standing out here because we were supposed to go to a psychiatrist,'" she said.San Diego Police have not confirmed that officers were called to the family's home that morning. These people were obviously very concerned to the degree that they called the police, especially in the face, they are very private people," she said.Clinical Psychologist Michelle Marie Carcel said forcing a kid who is over 18 to get psychiatric help can be complicated. She said parents need to be clear when calling 911 that they think their child is a danger to themselves or others."The most important thing is to really stress that in the call. I am concerned that my child is going to hurt themselves or hurt someone else, that kind of urgency really triggers that response from the officers," said Carcel.We don't know the circumstances of the call that day or if officers had contact with the 18-year-old. 3930

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Pacific Beach gym ordered to close for not adhering to the county's health orders and linked to one community outbreak has reopened.The Gym was forced to close on July 23 for violating public health orders after "the owners/operators of the Gym have acknowledged that they are aware of the Public Health Orders but will not voluntarily comply," according to a copy of the county order. A week after the county ordered the gym to close, a community outbreak was traced back to the fitness center, according to health officials.The county confirmed on Sunday that the gym has been allowed to reopen after altering their facility to be in compliance with health orders requiring that gyms move workouts outdoors. The state sent the ballots to 22 million voters about a month before the election because of the Coronavirus pandemic, according to the Associated Press. In San Diego County, the Registrar of Voters says it got a record of more than 1.1 million early votes, about 60 percent of the electorate. State Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, says mailing ballots to all registered California voters should become standard. “As with everything, there is always room for improvement, and we will work with elections officials to learn and assess this system moving forward," she said. "But one outcome is already crystal clear – providing every voter with the ability to choose whether to vote from home or in person should be California’s new normal.”Still, there are questions. First, the state Department of Finance says it cost million to send ballots to the .6 million Californians who don't sign up for them, according to the AP. Still, the state could save money by not operating as many polling locations. The Port of San Diego this week approved a 10-year lease with the owners and operators of Carnitas Snack Shack, Broken Yolk, and Little Italy food hall to open a new kind of restaurant at Seaport Village.The new restaurant, which will be on the east end of the property, will have a "Sam the Cooking Guy" concept. Sam Zien, also known as Sam the Cooking Guy, is a celebrity chef who aims to make cooking more down-to-earth, using ingredients that come from the everyday supermarket.
