(KGTV) — An Air Force pilot who was killed in Vietnam was honored on Tuesday with an official U.S Air Force Memorial Flyover in Coronado.His widow also honored for her years of work, fighting for prisoners of war and those missing in action to be acknowledged. Colonel Arthur "Art" S. CINCINNATI -- While their fellow incoming college students enjoyed Freshman Welcome Week, Natalie Vasu and Kiley Hatfield spent much of their first week at the University of Cincinnati sitting inside at Turner Schneider Hall. Their new dorm room had a broken shower head, broken locks and a thermostat on the fritz, and at least one person needed to be around to greet the repair teams who came to fix them.Those issues were irritating but all had quick solutions, Vasu said. The mold they discovered near four outlets in the room didn't."There were water dripping stains down the outlet," Vasu said. "We're lucky when we went and plugged things in that nothing caught fire or went wrong."The university immediately removed the girls -- Vasu, Hatfield and their two roommates -- from their room and offered them new rooms. Separate ones. Hatfield said she and Vasu were determined to stay together, and after hours of begging, the university agreed to put them up in a hotel as a pair. It's still a short-term fix. The girls don't know what their long-term living situation might be."We don't have a permanent option," Hatfield said. "We have no idea where we're supposed to go."M.B. Reilly, the university's director of public relations, said staff have worked to quickly address all of the issues Hatfield and Vasu raised. CINCINNATI, Ohio — Tommie Smith made history with a gesture in 1968, when he raised a single black-gloved fist on the Olympic podium after placing first in the 200-meter race. The silent, peaceful act of protest on behalf of oppressed people across the globe -- particularly in South Africa, where Apartheid reigned, and in the United States, where the Civil Rights Act was just four years old -- attracted censure, professional blacklisting and even death threats from people who witnessed it.That didn't stop Smith from fighting racial inequality wherever he saw it.Half a century later, it still hasn't."The darker the skin, the more problems you have when it comes to equity, and I'm there to find out why," Smith said Tuesday night at Cincinnati's National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. "Why can't we do better with the emergencies that's needed to keep people alive?"He partnered with Cradle Cincinnati to raise awareness of Ohio's disproportionately high infant mortality rate among black children. According to the Ohio Department of Health, black babies are nearly three times more likely than white to die before their first birthday.This holds true across all parental income levels, which might otherwise be an indicator of the type of medical care mothers and newborns do or do not receive. Experts aren't exactly sure why this happens or how to fix it.
