To wear small bags, usually with cinnabar, medicinal herbs or aromatic materials inside, is one of the traditions.     The festival is for people to remember Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet more than 2,000 years ago, who, according to legend, drowned himself in the Miluo River in Hunan Province to protest the then corrupt kingdom. Others say that they are meant to keep fish from feeding on Qu's body.     VARIOUS ACTIVITIES     On Thursday, dragon boat races were organized in many places across the country.     To mark the event, the 2009 National Dragon Boat Month and the Fourth China International Dragon Boat Tournament kicked off on the Miluo River. Ten domestic teams and an American team joined the competition. SEOUL, May 17 (Xinhua) -- South Korean President Lee Myung-bak met Sunday with a group of 20 quake-affected children from China's Sichuan Province, encouraging them to make unremitting efforts to improve and fulfill themselves so as to become useful talented persons in the future.     Under the invitation of the President Lee, 20 children from the earth-quake hit areas visited the presidential office, Cheong Wa DAE, with their 20 friends coming from a South Korean nursery school.     Lee encouraged the quake-affected children to overcome the shock and difficulties.     "We can never loose hope. VENICE, May 25 (Xinhua) -- China's top lawmaker Wu Bangguo left here for home on Sunday afternoon after concluding his three-nation Europe tour, which helped push his country's relations and cooperation with Europe.     Wu is the first chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), top legislature of China, who has paid an official goodwill visit to Austria in 15 years and to Italy in 12 years. The Europe tour also took Wu to Russia. During the 11-day trip, Wu met with the heads of state and governments of the three European nations and held talks with their parliament leaders. Wu said overseas Chinese companies should explore new ways to help China restructure its economy and upgrade its industries.     Wu, as China's top legislator, made the remarks as he met here with Chinese entrepreneurs who invest and do business in Italy and Europe.     Wu encourages the Chinese companies to expand their overseas market and explore new areas and channels of cooperation in other countries so as to make new contributions to China's cooperation with Italy and Europe.     Against the background of international financial crisis, Chinese companies should enhance research and development capabilities and establish overseas marketing network through cooperation with foreign companies, Wu said.     He hopes that Chinese companies should seized the opportunity of reshuffle of global industry to upgrade management and technology. He said Chinese companies should attach importance to fostering management talents with international experience.     During the visit, Wu demonstrated great interest in upgrading high-tech cooperation between China and the European countries. He visited Vienna High-tech Zone on Saturday, inspecting an energy saving office building and a wind tunnel, which is believed to be the world's largest for testing locomotives and automobiles. The wind tunnel has undertaken tests and data gathering for locomotives used in city subway system in Shanghai.     Wu also visited in Rome a research and development center under the Italian National Agency for New Technology, Energy and the Environment (ENEA) He inspected the high-temperature sole heat system for generating electricity at the R&D center.     Wu said it is a global trend in the energy sector to develop new energy and renewable energy in a broad prospect of growth. He said the Chinese government places great importance on and actively promotes development and application of all kinds of renewable energy, including solar energy. He expressed the wish that research institutes and companies of the two countries should increase cooperation and investment in this respect so as to jointly exploit the renewable energy market.     During the visit, both Wu and leaders of the three nations agreed that under the circumstances of international financial crisis, strengthening practical cooperation will not only help the countries to overcome current difficulties, but also help promote the recovery of world economy.

HANOI, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi attended the 9th Foreign Ministers' Meeting of the Asia-Europe Meeting here on Monday and delivered a speech at the opening ceremony.     Yang said with deepening globalization, the destinies of Asia and Europe have been tied together. Countries must intensify cooperation, deepen mutual trust and build a new and closer Asia-Europe partnership.     To build such a partnership, Yang said countries should enhance mutual understanding through dialogue on an equal footing. Countries should promote development through intensified cooperation. Countries should advocate mutual tolerance through expanded exchanges. Countries should strengthen its institution building to ensure the vitality.     Yang made several suggestions to cope with the ongoing financial and economic crisis and other global challenges.     First, Yang said countries should strengthen confidence and strive for economic recovery and growth. Countries should firmly oppose all forms of protectionism and take concrete steps to help develop countries maintain financial stability and work together to overcome the international financial crisis.     Second, countries should take active measures to counter the threat of A/H1N1 flu and other infectious diseases and minimize the impact of the flu on global trade and economic activities, said Yang.     Third, countries should think for the future, remain committed to the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities" and step up cooperation in tackling climate change.     Fourth, countries should increase input and foster and follow anew energy security concept that calls for win-win cooperation, diverse forms of development and common security through coordinated supply, said Yang.     Fifth, countries should promote peaceful and negotiated settlement of hotspot issues and regional disputes on the basis of mutual respect, mutual trust and cooperation. The international community should fully respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the countries concerned, provide active and constructive help, and avoid willfully applying pressure or sanctions.     Yang said to deal with the international financial crisis, China has adjusted its macro-economic policies and implemented positive fiscal policy and loosened its monetary policy in an appropriate manner.     China has launched a package of measures to expand domestic consumption and stabilize export market and these measures have started to take effect.     As a responsible member of the international community, China will continue to work together with other ASEM members to strengthen coordination in the macro-economic policy, advance the reform of international financial system and actively safeguard the stability of the multi-lateral trade system.     The 9th Foreign Ministers' Meeting of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) opened here on Monday with the participation of foreign ministers and delegates from 45 ASEM members in the two-day meeting.     Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung delivered the opening speech of the meeting.
