SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A suspect fleeing from officers and an innocent Camp Pendleton Marine were killed in an early-morning head-on crash following a chase on Interstate 5 in Carlsbad. The pursuit began just after midnight Tuesday when officers attempted to stop a motorist driving a dark-colored F-150 truck for a speeding and failing to signal a turn on Coast Highway turning onto Monterey Dr. When officers got to the door of the truck, the suspect took off on Carmelo Drive near Harbor Drive in Oceanside. The suspect's wife tells 10News Christian Zurita is the man who led police on the chase. Zurita was reported traveling at speeds of up to 100 mph, and sometimes driving the wrong way on the freeway, police said.About 10 minutes into the chase, the truck entered the northbound lanes in the wrong direction near the Las Flores bridge trying to evade police. NEWS HEADLINES: Preliminary hearing begins for LJCD teacher accused of sex with 17-year-old Oceanside Police Department officers did not pursue the truck because it was going the wrong way on the highway, traveling southbound in the northbound lanes, according to investigators. Instead, officers tracked Zurita with the help of a San Diego County Sheriff's Office helicopter.OPD says at some point, Zurita turned off his lights. Moments later, he slammed his truck head-on into a light-colored Pontiac Grand Prix that was traveling in the northbound lanes.Officers approached the truck, breaking out the windows, and deploying a K9. A male passenger in the F-150 was pulled from the wreckage and rushed to Scripps La Jolla Hospital. Investigators said the victim in the Pontiac, a 19-year-old Camp Pendleton Marine, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity hasn't been released at this time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After a deadly house fire in Logan Heights, 10News spoke with a retired fire captain on fire safety checks that can protect you and your family.Bob Lyon is a retired fire captain and knows the tragedy that can come with burglar bars in the Logan Heights neighborhood, "something that they're using for protecting their lives, ends up being something that costs them their lives."A Fire Code adopted in the late 1990's requires bars have a safety latch. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After 125 years serving San Diego customers Jessop's Jewelry store is closing down. Owner Jim Jessop tells 10News it was a decision several years in the making and one that is definitely bittersweet. All three of his sons opted not to take over and he didn't want to sell a business with such strong family ties. Jessop's dates back to the late 1800's when Jim's great grandfather opened the first store. He also designed the iconic clock which is now on display at Horton Plaza.Jessop says he doesn't have a firm closing date, he will simply stay open until he's sold the last piece of jewelry. Property owners at Horton have asked Jessop to move the clock, so he is now in the process of looking for another location that will preserve the timepiece. 799

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A teenager was struck by a San Diego trolley near Petco Park less than an hour after the end of the Padres opening day game.The incident happened about 5:30 p.m. at 600 Park Blvd., near Market St. The location is several blocks from the ballpark and was busy due to fans leaving the game.The 19-year-old man who was hit was conscious and breathing, officials said. There was no word on the nature of any injuries or the impact on trolley service.Emergency officials did not indicate whether the teenager had attended the Padres game. 565
