DETROIT — Insulin is the difference between life and death for people with Type 1 diabetes. They say they are tired of watching the cost of the drug continue to increase in the United States. WXYZ went to Jillian Rippolone’s home as she met with diabetics. They spoke about their struggles getting the insulin they need. It's a struggle Rippolone first experienced when, as a child, her parents lost their health insurance. “We were turned away because we didn’t have the money at the time to afford our insulin, which is this little bottle right here," she said. "This was 0 in the '90s. I needed three of them.”Rippolone says she feared for her life as her parents worked to get the money needed. Now, she says the situation is worse for many patients because the cost of insulin has increased in the United States. “For my 30 day supply, it is ,020,” Rippolone said. Michele Busticker, a woman meeting with other diabetics at Rippolone’s home, said she thought she was covered because she had health insurance. Then she dropped a vile on the floor. Insurance wouldn't cover a replacement.“I had to actually admit myself to the emergency room to get insulin to survive,” Busticker said. Mike Cowan says he turned to Rippolone for help when an Uber passenger stole his medicine as he drove.“Insurance isn’t going to make up for that, so I had to seek it out on the black market,” Cowan said. The black market he turned to is a vast network of people who offer insulin online. Rippolone is a leader in it. “Because when there is a diabetic in need you get it. Because if you don’t get insulin you are going to die,” Rippolone said.Diabetics use different amounts of insulin each month, based on their blood sugar. Rippolone runs a 1748

COLORADO — Riders on rentable scooters getting them from Point A to Point B around cities in America may not be thinking about something big: The germs.When our reporters talked to folks riding on them, they guessed the handles could be pretty germ-ridden.Our reporters looked at public bikes, too, and did some swab tests, which were taken to a lab. The goal was to find out what bacteria may be found on the scooters.The team tested for stapholococous, E. coli, general bacteria levels, yeast and mold.The results were surprising.“My initial action was surprise,” said Microbiologist Helene Ver Ecke, of Metro State University. She knows all about bacteria."Some were a lot cleaner and some were a lot dirtier,” Ver Ecke said of the tests.One group of scooters had:? 700 bacteria colonies? No E. coli or strep? Lower levels of mold and yeast where presentAnother group showed:? 12,000 bacteria colonies (highest in all of our tests)? Nothing else presentFor perspective, a person’s hand, on average, has about 3,200 bacteria on it."So you are really the walking contaminant and that's why these scooters are being contaminated because people are gripping them with their hands and potentially sweating on them and just.. It's the humans that are dirty,” Ver Ecke said.One group of public bikes showed 3,500 bacteria colonies but were the worst offenders of yeast and mold: 900 colonies.The other tested positive for 5,500 bacteria colonies and had a middle-range number for yeast and mold. "You have normal yeasts and molds on our hands we ingest yeast and mold, that's what makes us bread and beer and all kinds of things. So not all fungus are bad,” Ver Ecke said.The tests make the germ issue seem pretty bad, but there is bacteria everywhere, and it’s not all bad, she said.People were surprised there wasn’t more bacteria.Ver Ecke said it’s because there isn’t food present, which would provide moisture for bacteria to feed on. The bacteria is probably going away pretty quickly, she said."The variation that we've seen may be indicative of how long a time period it was since the last person rode it,” Ver Ecke said.Cleaning it off may be a waste of time, she said. Democratic donor Ed Buck has been charged with operating a drug house after a 37-year-old man suffered a nonfatal overdose at his apartment last week. Two other men have died of overdoses at Buck's house.Buck is accused of injecting the man with methamphetamine at his West Hollywood apartment on September 11, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. The man overdosed but survived.Buck was charged with three felony counts on Tuesday, including battery causing serious injury, administering methamphetamine and maintaining a drug house.He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday, and prosecutors are recommending bail be set at million, the DA's office said.CNN has reached out to Buck's attorney, Seymour Amster.Gemmel MooreThe latest victim isn't the only person to have overdosed in Buck's home.Two men have been found dead in Buck's apartment -- one in 2017 and the other in January.
