SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Police Department is preparing for the possibility of big demonstrations on and around Election Day. "We don't have any credible information to say that there's going to be civil unrest or large protests groups out on Election Day or soon thereafter on Election Day. However, we have been in contact with other cities throughout the United States. We've been in contact with our federal partners throughout the United States. We're preparing for possible unrest to occur on Election Day and afterward," said SDPD Lt. Shawn Takeuchi.SDPD will not reveal exact staffing levels but said that officers will be ready to handle the calls. Lt. Takeuchi added that SDPD has nine stations throughout the city and it’s up to each station's captain to determine appropriate staffing levels for the election. He said that officers are mindful of concerns surrounding the ballots and the pandemic. “As humans, when you don't know your future, I think it brings out a little bit of anxiety and so I think that we are aware of that and the emotions,” Takeuchi added.Sean Eldridge, with Protect the Results, told ABC10 News his group is focused in part on preparing several upcoming rallies in San Diego and beyond.“Part of our work at Protect the Results is to encourage every American to be patient and realize that it could take days if not longer before we know the full count of this election,” said Eldridge. "We have nearly 400 pre-planned events across the country which could happen as early as the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 4, the day after Election Day, if Trump were to try to undermine the election results.”Eldridge says that participants are being encouraged to remain peaceful.Lt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego State University Police Department, along with its allied agencies, is stepping up patrols after a string of robberies.Students and non-students have been targeted in recent weeks on and off-campus.At 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, three students were robbed by at least two people. Their phones and a set of keys were stolen.On Monday, just before 7 p.m., another person was robbed while walking along the sidewalk near Lindo Paseo and College Avenue. Police say two suspects pushed the victim down and stole their phone.“Avoid distraction and stay alert, if they see suspicious activity call us right away," said Raquel Herriott, Community and Media Relations Specialist with the SDSU Police Department.Students have also been targeted through the Offer Up app which connects buyers and sellers to household items.Police are looking for a suspect in the Offer Up cases, named Anthony Joseph Green. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego City Attorney's Office has filed charges against a man accused of harassing multiple women at a Mission Valley shopping center.Three misdemeanor charges were filed against Orlando Chavez of San Diego, including two for false imprisonment, and one for criminal assault and battery. The City Attorney's Office says Chavez held some women against their will by climbing under their cars and refusing to come out.City officials say Chavez would approach most of his victims in a shopping center at 10330 Friars Rd. In one instance, he reportedly grabbed one woman by the arm and told her, “You can flatten me out any time.” The City Attorney's official initially indicated the incidents took place at Westfield Mission Valley, but later said that was incorrect.In another instance, he reportedly followed a woman into her workplace, and approached another victim as she waited to pick up her children at school. City officials say police investigated him for stalking that woman for nearly two years and slashing the tires of her husband’s car."Everyone has the right to feel safe when going to work, shopping, or picking up their children at school," City Attorney Mara Elliott said. "As City Attorney, I take seriously threatening and harassing behaviors like this and will hold accountable individuals who endanger the safety of any San Diegan."Investigators added that Chavez, 72, has a history of crawling under women's vehicles to prevent them from leaving dating back to 2018.In multiple incidents, he was seen driving a white Chevrolet truck, with a personalized license plate reading HINUF. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This is the time of year that retailers usually announce how many workers they'll be hiring for the holiday season, but that's been slow to happen in 2020, according to a new report.Outplacement firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas released a list of about 35 major chains and delivery services, with only seven reporting how many they plan to hire. It says big box chains such as Macy's, Target and Kohl's have still not made their plans public. Firm CEO John Challenger said companies normally start announcing hiring plans after Labor Day. "They're deferring those announcements because they just don't know where they stand," he said. Challenger said retail spending is shifting more dramatically online, given the pandemic. He said that will create a new demand for jobs through distributions centers as opposed to retail stores. The report notes that Amazon has been hiring new people throughout the pandemic, which could explain why the online retail giant only plans to add 100,000 jobs this holiday season, down from the 200,000 it added last year. The report says UPS plans to hire 100,000, up for 95,000 last year; while FedEx will add 70,000, up from 55,000 in 20`19. Challenger said he still expects retail hiring to increase over the holidays because this is their biggest time of year. He said, however, that the jobs may be different in store - from temperature takers to curbside delivery people. Challenger said the competition will be quite keen amid double digit employment, with information potentially limited. "You need to be out there right now looking to get these jobs, talking with retailers, letting them know you're interested, because they'll make their hiring and then it will be more, catch as catch can," Challenger said. The uncertainty has also extended to Main Street. Luisa Jackson, a co-owner of Earth's Elements, a gift and beauty boutique with locations in Little Italy and Carlsbad, said normally this time of year is about planning for the holidays. "It's just a lot of uncertainty and we also don't know about how COVID is going to impact the fall," said Jackson, who noted the chain does have three jobs currently open, and plans to staff up more for the holidays.
