WINDSOR, Ontario — Caesars Windsor Hotel and Casino is temporarily closed due to a labor dispute with a local union.According to the company's website, the closure is the result of a labor disruption. A message on the site says, "At this time, hotel reservations booked between Friday, April 6 until Thursday, April 12 have been canceled."The Unifor Local 444 Facebook page says there was a tentative deal in place as of April 3 but that fell through.On Thursday night, only 41 percent of union members voted in favor of the new deal, which caused the strike. The 444 handles everything from janitors and food/waitstaff to hotel clerks.The casino says that Friday’s Johnny Reid concert has been postponed. Ticketholders can use their tickets when the show is rescheduled, or get a refund. However, tickets purchased at the Caesars box office will not be refunded until it reopens following the labor dispute. Right now, the casino says all other shows are scheduled until further notice.It's not clear how long the employee strike will last. While many businesses shut down temporarily due to COVID-19, zoos and aquariums couldn’t fully close because animals still need to be taken care of.However, with little to no visitors during what’s normally the busiest time of the year, some are facing tough times and getting creative.“It’s a lot of work,” said Patty Wallace, an Animal Keeper at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.“We feed all of them about three times a day, about 40 pounds each of grass hay, about six pounds of grain per hippo, and also some fruits and vegetables for training and nourishment. So they get lots of variety,” Wallace explained. That’s just the hippos, which are part of a new exhibit the zoo opened during the shutdown.“Opening a brand new exhibit is normally hard enough,” said Bob Chastain, the President and CEO of the zoo.With large groups and traditional presentations considered unsafe, the zoo pivoted. “Now, what we do instead is we’re grabbing random people and taking them back behind the scenes, letting them help us with the everyday things we’re doing,” Chastain said.Letting kids help feed the hippos and other animals, up close and personal.“We are trying to adjust and we would like to share our hippos,” Wallace said. “But because we don’t want crowds, we do it in small bursts.”Back in spring, zoos and aquariums were told to close.“All of them have had a period of two to four months of closure. Some are still closed,” said Dan Ashe, President and CEO of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. AZA is a nonprofit that represents over 240 of these businesses.“When they’re closed they’re not really closed, because they have to continue caring for the animals,” Ashe said. That’s what makes zoos and aquariums unique.“The essential ingredient in success is a guest,” he said. Even with no guests, the work doesn’t stop, which has put some in financial distress. “We have had some that have been on the verge of closure.”Ashe said about 20% of its members are in a weak financial position, so zoos got creative to keep guests interested. “The San Antonio Zoo started with the idea of a drive-thru zoo,” Ashe said.At Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, they made use of social media. “Our social media team, like many around the country, really ramped up,” Chastain said.Now as they begin to reopen their gates, they face a whole new set of challenges. “Almost every zoo in the country had to revamp and figure out how to do timed tickets, because it was one of the major requirements,” Chastain said.Timed ticketing, one way traffic, cashless exchange -- these were all concepts zoos and aquariums had to adapt to.“All over the zoo there are marks that help people stay away from each other,” Chastain said.Even with sold out tickets, the crowds are nothing like they used to be. And many fundraising events had to be canceled or postponed with new capacity limits.“Our guess is for the next 12 months, we won’t have those large crowds,” he said.But families continue to come to see the giraffes, look at the penguins, or feed Zambezi and Kasai, the hippos.“It’s been a challenge, but a lot of fun,” Wallace said. 3105
When you step inside a restaurant in eastern Idaho, it’s no secret which menu item is a favorite one."I don’t know what other kind of potatoes we would have if we didn’t have Idaho potatoes," said FaDale Fisher, who works at Big Jud's in Ashton, Idaho.The restaurant is feeling life again in a state that produces more potatoes than any other.“Now, we’re almost back to full force, even though we are still limited on tables, business is still really well," she said.Idaho potatoes are also an important ingredient at Grandpa's Southern BBQ in Idaho Falls.Owner Lloyd Westbrook says take-out orders have helped his restaurant thrive this year. He's been in business since 1995.“You will find hospitality in restaurants out West, but it’s just not quite southern hospitality," he said.While the sight of spirited kitchens could give hope the food industry is beginning to rebound, for some of the potato farmers who work close by in this state, that hope feels very far away.“It’s unclear if we’re even going to be able to stay in business," said Doug Hess.Hess' family has farmed his land since the 1800s.“When you look around, you realize you’re actually farming with not your equity but your grandfather's, your father's equity," Hess said.Hess’ specialty is seed potatoes. They are grown free of virus and genetic defects.He sells to commercial farmers, who use the seed potatoes to grow the ones you eventually eat.Hess says the pandemic caused a food-chain reaction that hurt his business. When restaurants closed, the distributors that deliver potatoes to kitchens pulled back on buying from commercial growers, and those growers bought less of his already grown crop."We were anticipating a bag of a potatoes," Hess said. "Click of a switch if you could get rid of it for ."He was left with a pile of potatoes, and he donated about a quarter of his crop.He's now planted significantly less as COVID-19 cases rise.The federal government has stepped in to help the potato industry, but Hess says the struggles of he and his fellow farmers could last long after the pandemic."It could be three or four years out before this thing stabilizes," he said.For this lifelong farmer, it's a generational pressure.“Every time I sit at the table and I look at my sons thinking, ‘Will I be able to pass this on as my father passed on to me?’” Hess said. 2361
When 4-year-old Mateo forgot his favorite toy, Bear, in San Diego during a recent trip, employees of a local hotel made sure Bear had a good time in America’s Finest City.Mateo and his parents visited San Diego earlier this month. They didn’t realize they left Bear in their hotel room at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay. Employees were able to find Bear, but made sure he enjoyed his extended vacation in San Diego before sending him back to Los Angeles. Bear enjoyed the hotel pool and water slide, lunch, and the spa before his trip back home. Hotel employees took photos of Bear’s adventures and sent him back home to his family, along with a few goodies for Mateo.Mateo and his family are relatives of 10News reporter Melissa Mecija. 744
