SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After seven years of demanding that their death and disability benefits be restored, San Diego City Firefighters finally had their voices heard after the City Council voted unanimously to bring the benefits back.The council made the decision less than five minutes after the firefighters arrived at City Hall and was met with a standing ovation.The benefits were eliminated after the passing of Proposition B, so all firefighters hired after 2012, about 350, never received them."All other firefighters across the state and most across the country have a defined death-and-disability if killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty, they have a pension, and they have pay parity," said Jesse Connor, president of the firefighters union.The benefits provide city employees injured in the line of duty and unable to continue work 50 percent of their base salary until death. For those killed in the line of duty, the money would go to their spouse.After lengthy back and forth talks between the city's firefighters union and the city's labor negotiators, an agreement was made.But, in that time, the union says it had trouble with recruitment and retention, leading to countless hours of overtime as firefighters continued to serve the community every day and hour of the week.Now, they say they are feeling thankful that all firefighters will have equal benefits."It's amazing," said 17-year veteran of the city's fire department, Tony Tosca. "The word 'unity' comes to mind. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A YouTube video of a community college police officer who drew his gun on a San Diego man carrying a camera Wednesday is going viral.The video shows the Mesa College police officer getting out of his car and asking Chris, the man with two cameras, what he was filming.Chris, who did not want to provide his last name, refused to put down the GoPro camera. Within seconds, the officer took his weapon out of the holster. The officer did not put his gun back in the holster until a second officer arrived.Chris is the founder of California Citizens Watch, a group that audits government entities. He told 10News reporter Allison Ash he was not trying to provoke the officer into pulling his gun.Watch the confrontation: 10News spoke with former El Cajon police officer Kevin LaChapelle who said he believes Chris was definitely out for a confrontation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A surfer was found unconscious, face down in the water near Pacific Beach early Wednesday.San Diego lifeguards were notified of the woman in her 30's just after 8 a.m. inside the surf zone at Tourmaline Surf Park.10News spoke to Jason Glover, a paddleboard surfer who set up a robot-camera on the beach to capture surf videos. One of the clips captured the audio of the exact moment bystanders found the woman unconscious.“Hey! Hey! Call 9-1-1,” they said. Fellow surfers immediately pulled her out of the water and started CPR. Lifeguards continued life-saving efforts once they arrived, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Mónica Mu?oz.The woman began breathing again and was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital, but her condition was not immediately known.“They immediately brought her in. But that’s what surfers do. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- All lanes of eastbound Interstate 8 have reopened after a three-vehicle crash caused four lanes of the interstate to be closed. The crash happened near the College Road off-ramp around 3:45 a.m. The California Highway Patrol gave few details on what exactly caused the crash.A driver of the SUV involved in the crash said another car drove the wrong way down the ramp and smashed into his vehicle. A third vehicle then crashed into the two others.Two people inside one of the vehicles were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.CHP says one of those inside the sedan at the time of the crash may have been thrown from the car. The man is also being investigated for possibly driving under the influence, according to CHP.The driver of the SUV was uninjured while the driver of the third vehicle is being investigated for driving under the influence. 898
